Monitoring For Underdetermined Underground Structures During Excavation Using Limited Sensor Data

Mehdawi, Nader 01 January 2013 (has links)
A realistic field monitoring application to evaluate close proximity tunneling effects of a new tunnel on an existing tunnel is presented. A blind source separation (BSS)-based monitoring framework was developed using sensor data collected from the existing tunnel while the new tunnel was excavated. The developed monitoring framework is particularly useful to analyze underdetermined systems due to insufficient sensor data for explicit input force-output deformation relations. The analysis results show that the eigen-parameters obtained from the correlation matrix of raw sensor data can be used as excellent indicators to assess the tunnel structural behaviors during the excavation with powerful visualization capability of tunnel lining deformation. Since the presented methodology is data-driven and not limited to a specific sensor type, it can be employed in various proximity excavation monitoring applications.

Llanca-Vargas, Daniel 20 January 2014 (has links)
Maintenance and sustainability of underground structures are the major tasks for infrastructures’ owners. To carry out these tasks, managers need to qualify the actual state of these facilities. There are very few operational methods to describe separately each component of an underground structure (structure lining, contact interface and surrounding soil). Most of them are mainly based on visual inspection. Nevertheless only the intrados of the tunnel is open to visual inspection. To improve their maintenance policy, that is to say sustain their heritage and keep it in good conditions of safety and operational, it is necessary that manager’s can update their diagnosis methods (AFTES, 2005). It is therefore imperative to have tools to better assess the actual condition of structures. However, the methods available at present managers are often either insufficient to provide quantitative information quality or poorly adapted to the constraints of these works. In this context, the ANR project MéDiTOSS "Methodology Diagnostic Tunnels and Underground Structures in Service" aims to develop a new diagnostic methodology adapted to this type of work characterizing the various components of the structure (structure of the lining, enclosing soil and their interface or contact). The objective of this thesis is to provide to the managers of physical and mechanical indicators that will guide its maintenance policy based on a certain expertise.

Impacts des ouvrages souterrains sur l’eau souterraine urbaine : Application à l’agglomération lyonnais / Impact of underground structures on urban groundwater : Example of Lyon, France

Attard, Guillaume 19 January 2017 (has links)
Urban subsoil provides space, groundwater, geothermal energy and geomaterials, and the importance underlying the management of this strategic space is well-known. In the context of vertical urban growth, groundwater management, is a crucial issue. The aim of the PhD thesis was to improve the knowledge related to the impacts caused by underground structures on groundwater resource in order to provide a basis for the decision making dedicated to urban planners. The understanding of the role played by numerous types of underground structures was improved at the decision-making scale. Underground structures involving pumping devices were shown to be responsible for the fragmentation of flow systems, which can modify the urban groundwater regime. Under low gradient conditions, impervious structures were confirmed to have a nonsignificant effect on water table elevation. Regarding quality, reservoir theory was applied to assess the impact of underground structures on groundwater quality. This theory allows to take into account the advective and dispersive part of groundwater flow. A dispersive piston effect is shown to occur under the structures, favoring the vertical spreading of pollutants. In addition, the impacts of underground structures on urban groundwater temperature were investigated. The annual heat from underground structures were computed deterministically, highlighting the significant thermally affected zones. Finally, the impacts of underground structures on groundwater flow quality and temperatures were analyzed in order to prevent risks and disturbances : flood risk, degradation of groundwater quality, jeopardizing geothermal potential.

Análise de risco de obras subterrâneas em maciços rochosos fraturados / Risk analysis of underground structures in fractured rock masses

Napa García, Gian Franco 11 June 2015 (has links)
In this thesis the author establishes a systematic method for quantifying the risk in underground structures in fractured rock masses using structural reliability concepts in an efficient way. The method is applied to the case study of the underground cavern of Paulo Afonso IV Hydroelectrical Power Station UHE-PAIV. Additionally, an optimization study was conducted in order to show a potential application of the method. The estimation of the risk was done according to the recommendations of the United Nations Disaster Relief Organization UNDRO where risk can be estimated as the convolution between the hazard, vulnerability and losses functions. FORM and SORM were used as approximation methods for the reliability quantification by means of Direct Coupling and Quadratic Polynomial Response Surfaces. A Monte Carlo simulation was also used to quantify the reliability of the cavern UHE-PAIV because of the presence of multiple failure modes in the numerical model. In this study 3 types of threads were evaluated: excessive wall convergence, face stability and wedge block fall. Hazard functions were built relative to the thread intensities such as wall convergence ratio or block size. In the case of excessive wall convergence a deep circular tunnel was studied meaning to compare the quality of the approximation of the reliability technique (FLAC3D with direct coupling) to the exact solution. Errors below 0.1% were found in the reliability index ß estimation. The reliability of the face stability was evaluated using two limit analysis solutions against the numeric estimation. For the block stability it was verified that the sequential excavation recommended by the Q system increases considerably the reliability of the excavation leading safety to modern standard levels, e.g. from a ß equal to 2.04 for a full section excavation to 4.43 for a partial excavation. In the case study of the UHE-PAIV, the reliability of the underground cavern was estimated using the commercial software Unwedge. The probability of failure of individual blocks was integrated along the length of the cavern and the concept of structural system was used to estimate the global probability of failure. The cavern presented a probability of failure of 3.11% to 3.22% and a risk of 7.22x10-3 x C and 7.29x10-3 x C - where C is the cost of failure of a large block. The critical individual block showed a ß equal to 3.63. The optimization was performed considering two design variables − liner thickness and number of bolt per square meter. The optimal design was found as the pair, [t, nb] which minimizes the total cost function. Also, a sensibility analysis was conducted to understand the influence of some parameters in the location of the optimal excavation design. Concluding, the results obtained here suggest that the quantitative risk analyses, as a base for the risk assessment and management, can and must be considered as a north for the practice of geotechnical engineering owing that these analyses reconcile the basic concepts of mechanical efficiency, safety and financial feasibility. Thus, risk quantification is fully affordable.

Les grands constructeurs précoloniaux du plateau du sud du Brésil : étude de paysages archéologiques à Bom Jesus, Rio Grande do Sul, Brésil / The great pre-colonial builders of the southern brazilian plateau: a study of the archaeological landscapes in Bom Jesus, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil

Copé, Silvia Moehlecke January 2006 (has links)
The highlands in southern Brazil were settled around the beginning of our era by precolonial peoples who built large earth buildings on the ground in the form of small burial hills, earth deposits, walls, landfills, terraces, in addition to building underground and semiunderground structures. In order to get more information and better understand the way of life of these populations, the landscape archeology approach was used to make diggings in the set of buildings on site RS-AN-03 and on the archeological survey conducted at a pilot area of 1,500 Km² located in Bom Jesus in the southernmost Brazilian state. This approach, which views the landscape as an active player in human social actions, provided a new interpretative contribution to the archeology of Brazilian highlands, enabling the design of a territory behavior model based on the analyses performed within sites, across sites and at the regional level and a new narrative discourse on pre-colonial human settlements. This discourse, made from the realization of the expansion of araucaria forecast on a grassland landscape that took place together with the expansion and settlement of human groups around 1,500 BC shows evidence of a social-environmental dynamics at the araucaria plateau, a landscape anthropogenization. The high concentration of resources available and ensured all year round enabled the concentration of people who built permanent towns and larges villages and constituted complex hierarchized societies that kept their territories delimited and protected.
