Toward a Humane Computerization of Society: The Role of Higher EducationCollins, Kenneth Dan 12 1900 (has links)
This heuristic and inductive study proposes a philosophy and models for a humanizing role for higher education in the computer age. The university's traditional role stands the risk of serious erosion through increasing emphasis on technological programs, particularly in the computer areas. The pressures from inside and outside the university threaten to produce increasing numbers of what have been termed "highly educated barbarians." Because computerization offers to be a pervasive and widely-felt influence on society, the university must see that its graduates—both the producers and the consumers of computerization—become humane, liberally educated persons; they must have technical excellence and also an understanding of the "system Man." The study calls for an enhanced new curriculum fostering a "new mind" for the computer age, encompassing quality of both technique and humanity in its students.

Strategic planning utilized in Atlantic Coast Conference intercollegiate athleticsSmith, Clarence Adrian January 1985 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine if strategic planning was being employed by the intercollegiate athletic programs of the Atlantic Coast Conference. This research study was designed to examine the marketing procedures utilized by the athletic administrators of the Atlantic Coast Conference that would be beneficial in conducting a strategic plan for their organization.
The population for the study consisted of the eight member institutions of the Atlantic Coast Conference. All eight of the intercollegiate athletic organizations participated in the study. The study consisted of two parts: (1) a written survey and (2) personal interviews with the administrators of five of the member institutions.
Each of the following areas were examined: (1) formal plans, (2) macroenvironmental factors, (3) target markets, (4) pricing techniques, and (5) management information systems. These areas were selected after the review of the literature revealed that these areas were necessary components in the development of a strategic plan. Data were analysed using STAT PAC by Walconik Inc. and reported through the use of descriptive statistics consisting of frequencies and percentages. Data were also compiled from the interviews and reported in tabular and descriptive formats.
Findings of the study revealed that the administrators of the Atlantic Coast Conference had the necessary tools to develop strategic plans but were not committed to developing any long range plans. Marketing tactics necessary for strategic planning are not perfected in the intercollegiate athletic programs of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Short-Term Enrollment Projections Based on Traditional Time Series AnalysisBrooks, Dorothy Lynn 12 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was to make short-term projections of student semester credit hour enrollments, at each of two state universities of comparable size, based on traditional time series analysis. 1. The first purpose of the study was to identify the cyclical component of deseasonalized enrollment data. 2. The second purpose was to determine a cyclical economic indicator having a high correlation with the cyclical component of the enrollment data. The selected economic indicator was used in establishing explanatory equations for projecting enrollment. 3. The third purpose was to compare projected 1979- 1980 academic year enrollment figures obtained from explanatory equations for each institution with actual enrollment figures of each institution for that year. 4. The fourth purpose was to compare the explanatory equations developed for the two institutions and the projections of student semester credit hour enrollments they yielded. 5. The fifth purpose was to discuss enrollment projections for each institution and the uses of enrollment projections in planning.

Conceptualisation of service-learning at two rural-based universitiesMaphutha, Mokwi Morgan January 2016 (has links)

order to provide a shared and common understanding necessary for guiding best
practice of service-learning at the heart of two-rural-based universities in South Africa.
The key research question answered in this study was: How is service-learning
conceptualised by dir ectors of community engagement, project coordinators,
academic staff members, and students at two rural-based universities in South
Africa?
The following sub-questions were developed on the basis of the key research question:
• What are the current community engagement projects that can be modified for
future practice of service-learning at two rural-based universities in South
Africa?
• What are the views of directors of community engagement, project coordinators,
academic staff members, and students regarding conceptualisation
of service-learning at two rural-based universities in South Africa?
• What are the possible strategies for conceptualising and managing the quality
of service-learning at two rural-based universities in South Africa?
• What framework will be relevant and appropriate for conceptualising and implementing
service-learning at two rural-based universities in South Africa?
A qualitative research approach using grounded theory design was employed in this
study. Convenience sampling was used to select the two rural-based universities in
the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Four similar schools from each university
(Education, Law, Agriculture, and Health Sciences) were sampled purposively.
Participants were also sampled purposively. These included the director of community
engagement, one project coordinator, two academic staff members, and two final year
undergraduate students who were taking part in community engagement or servicelearning-
related activity at each sampled school at both universities.
Data were captured through document analysis, semi-structured interviews with
sampled participants, and silent observations. Content analysis was used to analyse
data from documents. Data from semi-structured interviews and silent observations
were analysed thematically. Findings from documents, semi-structured interviews and

silent observations were used to make recommendations for developing a framework
for conceptualising and managing the quality of service-learning at the two universities.
The study revealed that service-learning is an unfamiliar concept at these two ruralbased
universities. Advocacy of service-learning has never been done and no initiatives
are made on the part of these universities to familiarise this concept. The study's
findings also reflect that there is confusion among various role-players regarding the
meaning of the concept service-learning. Participants showed that some prefer to use
the concept community engagement rather than service-learning, while others view
service-learning as synonymous to community engagement.
The SMART conceptual framework was developed on the basis of the findings and
recommendations of this study. This conceptual framework is SMART because it is S -
socially relevant, M - manageable, A - adaptable, R - rural-based, and T - transformative.
The proposed SMART conceptual framework is intended to guide institutional
leaders, directors of community engagement, deans of faculties, directors of schools,
heads of departments, project coordinators, academic staff members, students,
traditional leaders, and community partners in conceptualising, implementing and
managing the quality of service-learning endeavours at the two rural-based South
African universities.

Previous issue date: 2014-02-03 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Most studies dealing with the issue of managing architectural and engineering have as its object of study the project management and private works of architecture. The public sector, such as academic institutions, have an important role in construction, but it is rarely analyzed in the work area. With the expansion of their campi, it has been observed most of the projects developed in the IFES have been outsourced. One reason for this is the fact that institutions often do not have a project team trained, prepared and structured enough to answer the demands of project. Moreover, it is observed that the units trying to develop their projects have had recurring management problems that embrace throughout the design process to work. It is associated with the increasing demand of the construction supply chain to adopt methodologies for the development of sustainable buildings. In view of the above facts, the objective of this research is to identify the factors conditions and procedures for proposing a model for the structuring of a Project Management Office (PMO) driven to sustainable projects in IFES. For this, we attempted to through a literature review and survey of multiple mini‐cases basis for the proposal of three reference models for the structure and operation of PMO. As a main result, it is concluded that the adoption of a systemic vision and understanding of the building design process from product life cycle are essential for the development of such projects. / A maioria dos trabalhos que tratam da questão da gestão de projetos de arquitetura e engenharia tem como objeto de estudo a gestão de projetos e obras de arquitetura privadas. O setor público, como por exemplo, as instituições universitárias, tem importante papel na construção civil, mas raramente é analisada pelos trabalhos na área. Com a expansão dos seus campi, tem‐se observado que a maioria do projetos de AEC desenvolvidos nas IFES tem sido terceirizados. Uma das razões para isso é o fato de que essas instituições muitas vezes não possuem uma equipe de projetos treinada e preparada, e com estrutura suficiente para atender as demandas de projetos. Além disso, observa‐ se que as unidades que tentam desenvolver seus projetos têm tido problemas recorrentes de gestão, que perpassam por todo o processo de projeto até a obra. Associa‐se a isso ainda, a crescente demanda da cadeia produtiva da construção em adotar metodologias para o desenvolvimento de construções sustentáveis. Em virtude dos fatos mencionados, o objetivo da presente pesquisa é identificar os fatores, requisitos e procedimentos para propor um modelo para a estruturação de um Escritório de Gerenciamento de Projetos (EGP) direcionado a projetos de AEC sustentáveis em IFES. Para isso, buscou‐se através de pesquisa bibliográfica e de levantamentos de múltiplos minicasos embasamento para a proposição de três modelos referenciais para a estruturação e operação do EGP. Como principal resultado, conclui‐se que a adoção da visão sistêmica e do entendimento do processo de projeto de edificações a partir do ciclo de vida do produto são essenciais para o desenvolvimento de projetos dessa natureza.
