175 Jahre Technische Mechanik: Ein Beitrag zum Jubiläum »175 Jahre Technische Universität Chemnitz«

Naumann, Friedrich 03 March 2015 (has links)
During the 175 years history of the Technical University of Chemnitz technical mechanics has been one of the basic disciplines of the engineering sciences. From the Higher Vocational School`s foundation in 1836 it has been part of the curriculum and has experienced continuous enrichment and refinement. As a result of excellent work of a large number of academic researchers and teachers, most of them with a background at renowned industrial companies and in diverse social areas, this scientific field experienced a remarkable development. Today it represents an important cornerstone of the curriculum and is studied not only by mechanical engineering students but also by many others from neighboring disciplines. For the first time this historical development is presented from different perspectives, dealing in depth with the evolution of the different subjects taught and also with the specifics of the conditions of academic teaching. In this context, academic teachers and students, research and development, academic life, international cooperation as well as publications are dealt with. This book is the outcome of longstanding research pursued by the Chair of the History of Science, Technology and Higher Learning on selected topics of the history of science and academic education. It is a contribution to the 175th anniversary of the Technical University of Chemnitz.

Challenges faced by staff members in information and communication training at a public university in the Eastern Cape

Ceza, Nomnqophiso Prudencia 07 1900 (has links)
The introduction of e-learning in teaching and learning has necessitated the training of staff members in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This study focuses on the challenges that staff members, who are the facilitators of learning, experience when undergoing training in ICT. The research design employed a qualitative methodology which involved focus groups from a public university. Data was collected from the participants through semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate that the challenges that staff members experienced during ICT training are related to a lack of computer competence, lack of time, an information overload, the non-involvement of staff in the planning of their training, facilitation limitations, lack of technical support and institutional challenges that involve infrastructure. The study further revealed that the principles of adult learning play a reciprocal role in the staff’s professional developmental challenges. In view of these findings, this study offers recommendations for improving the ICT training of staff members. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Adult Education)

The effective use of multiple-choice questions in assessing scientific calculations

Terblanche, Hester Aletta 02 1900 (has links)
This study investigated the effective use of online Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) with immediate formative feedback, and the granting of partial credit for correct second or third chance answers when assessing and assisting students’ conceptual learning at higher cognitive levels. The research sample comprised first year engineering science students at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), Pretoria campus. The differences between using online MCQ-assessment for problem-solving calculations and using constructed written questions (CRQs)1 in the assessment of problem-solving calculations were explored. Furthermore, the differences between the assessment of problem-solving calculations using online MCQs without immediate formative feedback, and with immediate formative feedback and the granting of partial credit were analysed. The findings revealed that students’ marks were lower when answering problem-solving calculations using online MCQs without immediate formative feedback than when answering the same questions using CRQs. This clearly indicates that using online MCQs without immediate formative feedback is not effective in assessing scientific problem-solving calculations. Alternatively, online MCQs proved effective in assessing problem-solving calculations when immediate formative feedback and partial credit were employed. The statistical analysis showed that students performed significantly better when immediate formative feedback was given and partial credit was granted for correct second or third attempts. This was due to online MCQs utilising immediate formative feedback, which made it possible to grant partial credit when students chose the correct answers after feedback. This showed that online MCQs with immediate formative feedback and partial credit being granted can be an effective assessment tool for scientific problem-solving calculations. It increases performance and supports learning from assessment. Students can thus correct their calculations whilst in the process of doing them. / Science and Technology Education / M. Ed. Kraví hora - rodinné stříbro VUT / Kraví hora - BUT Family silver

Peštálová, Lucie Unknown Date (has links)
The subject of the diploma thesis is to design a project study and a building program that would become a compromise between the requirements of the city of Brno and BUT in the area of Kraví hora in the Brno city center. The city of Brno would like to transform the area into a public park. But BUT considers it as its "family silver" because they realize its extraordinary value. Options of a constructions are really limited because of many area regulations. My proposal counts on the demolition of all existing buildings in the area, respects property area relations , protection zone, continuity with existing traffic roads, height regulation, imaginary raster of surrounding buildings, slope of terrain and orientation to the cardinal points. My suggest represents a study of five groups of objects which creating a rectangular raster. As a compromise solution, I chose the presentation and promotional areas of the individual faculties of BUT for the content of the buildings. Faculties have spaces for hobby groups for the public comprise all age groups included. I also designed the BUT Museum of History, a multimedia hall, a cafeteria, studios, a student leisure center and an observation tower with a climbing wall.
