Exercise programs as determinants of well-being : a holistic viewMay, Murray, n/a January 1982 (has links)
This field study is about well-being.
It examines the proposition that exercise is a pathway
to well-being. Participants in two "keep fit" groups
at the Australian National University Sports Union and
members of Lifestyle health and fitness club in Woden,
Canberra, A.C.T. provided the population for the study.
A critical review of the literature on well-being suggests
that a number of differing perspectives exist and that
these should be clarified before commencing such a study.
The existence of multidimensional indices of well-being
points to the use of a holistic model of well-being but
did not provide an existing methodology. Therefore an
experimental method was attempted using established and
open-ended questionnaires. In addition, a short
participant observation study of exercise programming in
the A.N.U. groups was carried out. Implications for
future studies of well-being are drawn, particularly
suggesting that existing tools designed for special
unidimensional examinations are inherently unsuitable.
The development of new research tools to evaluate the
different dimensions of well-being which together form
the whole are foreshadowed.

The objective of this study was to investigate the levels of pre - competitive anxiety of university athletes from the perspective of Bioecological Theory. 41 university athletes of both sexes participated, practicing Handball, Futsal or Volleyball. The mean age was 22.10 years. The sample characterization questionnaire and the CSAI - 2R were used. In the between analyzes groups the athletes of Volleyball pres ent low self - confidence and high anxiety compared to the other athletes. Futsal athletes are more confident than others. Intragroup, Futsal athletes also have high values of self - confidence and in Volleyball they present higher values of anxiety and in Handball they present low somatic anxiety. In relation to sex, men have greater self - confidence and women have greater somatic anxiety. Associating the Bioecological Theory, the athletes managed to develop during the process of the championship and even s uffering influences managed to create situations that promote their development in the competition. It is concluded that there is no way to think of the individual isolated from his interactions with people and the environment as a whole, the individual sh ould be analyzed in all aspects according to the Bioecological theory to think the individual in the process, in the people that the same suffers and exerts influence, the context that it is inserted or not and the t ime / period of its development.

The Experiences of Young Adult-Aged Women from South Asian Countries Attempting to Participate in Sport and Physical Activity in the United StatesRahman, Sohaila 07 1900 (has links)
This study aimed to broaden the understanding of young South Asian women's experiences/relationships and participation in leisure physical activities at universities in the United States. Using a phenomenological design, semi-structured interviews of 20-30 minutes duration were conducted with 5 South Asian women about their relationships and experiences when participating or attempting to participate in physical activity while attending university in the US. The following criteria were set for participants to be included in this study: they should be between the ages of 18 and 24, non-US citizens from a South Asian country, attend a university in the US, and engage in other physical activities. The interviews were audio recorded via Zoom and then the audio data were transcribed verbatim and then coded to identify the major barriers commonly experienced by participants. Results indicated that many girls and women perceived the US as a "safer" place with excellent infrastructure, ample opportunities to engage in physical activities, and convenient access to gyms, which encourage them (women) to remain active. Most participants were hesitant to participate in physical activities because of the culturally non-responsiveness of the system. This research study was done in a shorter time span with a small sample size. Further research should explore more deeply the experiences of South Asian women regarding their physical activities in the US with larger groups of samples that may be a better representative of the South Asian population.

A history of koshuisrugby at StellenboschHuys, Isabelle E. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSpor)--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Stellenbosch Rugby Football Club is the largest club in the world and the men’s
residence rugby competition is a component of that Club. The purpose of this study
was to document the origin, formation and activities of men’s residence rugby
(koshuisrugby) at Stellenbosch University.
The history of the University, the history of the Stellenbosch Rugby Football Club and a
little of the history of rugby in South Africa, and particularly at Stellenbosch, are given
as background information in the introduction to provide a global view.
The nucleus of this study concerns the development of koshuisrugby at Stellenbosch
University. An attempt has been made to reconstruct all gathered information as
accurately and as thoroughly as possible.
Although there is much popular writing on sport in South Africa, the supply of scientific
information is minimal. Studies such as these are thus hampered by the unavailability
of primary sports history information. As this study is sport-historically orientated, the
historic-scientific method has been implemented. Preference has been given to primary
sources of information. These sources included minutes, annual reports, reports of
annual meetings and reports of special meetings of the Stellenbosch Rugby Football
Club, as well as interviews with people involved with the club. Personal
correspondence and interviews have also been undertaken with the students and warders
of the various male residences. Secondary sources of information included University
of Stellenbosch publications, books, articles and newspapers.
The introductory section provides a broad outline of the history of rugby in
Stellenbosch; the sports fields of the University and especially the various venues of the
rugby club are dealt with. At first, games were played on the Braak, from where they
were moved to the Vlakte, the Paviljoenveld and later to Coetzenburg.
The second chapter is devoted to the formulation of the problem, defining of the study,
method of research and the evaluation of the resources. The third chapter describes all the male residences playing in the koshuisrugby
competition. Their history, emblems and their results in the koshuisrugby competition
are discussed in detail. Two other teams are also described. However, they are not
resident on the Stellenbosch Campus: the Elsenburg Agricultural College has also been
discussed as they take part in the koshuisrugby competition although they are not part of
the University. Medies (the Medical School) is part of the University and plays rugby
in the koshuisrugby competition, but is not situated on the Stellenbosch Campus.
The fourth chapter deals with the koshuisrugby competition. First, the origins and the
evolution of the five leagues are mapped out. Other competitions such as sevens rugby
and the first years’ tournament are also described.
Since koshuisrugby provided the playing field for experimenting with rules, a section
has been written on rule changes. Referees had to know and apply al those rule
changes, so something about the history and evolution of referees has also been given.
Finally, sponsors are discussed because their participation helped to make koshuisrugby
extremely popular.
histories-wetenskaplike metode daarvoor gevolg.
is.

A game within the game : an ethnographic study of culture and student-athlete recruitment at a Division I universityStephens, James Edwin, 1977- 26 January 2011 (has links)
The success of a college coach to develop winning teams and a winning culture in any sport largely depends on his/her ability to recruit and strengthen the skill levels of his/her student-athletes. The following ethnography of the Eastern Hawks baseball coaches seeks to describe the culture of this organization during two consecutive seasons including the recruitment of student-athletes and the management of the current players on the roster, and to also detail the coaches’ use of compliance gaining and aspects of communication in their interaction with the recruits and their families.
To investigate these issues, an ethnographic study was performed with a Division I baseball team called Eastern University. Numerous individual interviews were conducted with the staff and later transcribed. Team functions, games, and events were also attended for data collection. Results indicate that the organizational culture of Eastern Hawks baseball was initially created through artifacts such as facility improvements, game rituals, and performance requirements. The observed culture is being negatively influenced by espoused values and basic assumptions that run contrary to stated and desired goals. Leader-member relationships were regarded as predominantly low during this study accentuated by unfulfilled expectations of performance.
The coaches used various compliance-gaining methods in recruiting student athletes but were most successful when targeting prospects who valued education, had parents who also valued education, and who believed they would fit in with the culture present at Eastern. The coaches implemented strategies that were pro-social and also reduced excessive apprehension. When competing against the professional draft, the staff provided metaphorical statements to prospects and their families that which sought to highlight social identity. Coaches compared the negative effects of turning pro early as opposed to developing personally and athletically at Eastern. / text

The Press and the Historical Development of Three Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Programs in the Upper Midwest, 1950-1980Teigen, Danielle Ann January 2011 (has links)
From 1950-1980, women's intercollegiate athletic programs experienced exponential growth, with newspapers rarely detailing the journey until Title IX passed in 1972. This project examined how women's athletics developed at North Dakota State University, the University of North Dakota, and Minnesota State University Moorhead, as well as the correlating press coverage. Articles from two regional newspapers and three student newspapers from 1950-1980 illustrated the coverage women's athletics received, while women integrally involved in the three athletic programs from 1950-1980 supplemented the coverage and further explained the development. This thesis proposes a cohesive narrative of the press coverage associated with the development of three women's intercollegiate athletic programs in the Midwest from 1950-1980. The project also speculates on the reasons why different newspapers covered women's athletics in the area differently and why 1975 emerged as a watershed year for women's athletics at NDSU, UND, and MSUM.
