Unstable Systems or Why Is My Junk So Raw?

Musgrave, David 13 July 2016 (has links)
Unstable Systems or Why Is My Junk So Raw? is an exploration in the raw aesthetics of exposed electronics; showing the complicated systems that make our everyday electronics work using the visual language of formalism to display these “broken” consumer electronics as art. The work in my thesis show explores the creative potential of death and impermanence through the failing of technology. The work in the exhibition combines my interest and childhood fascination in electronics as well as my experience with my father’s illness. Accidentally and intentionally broken TV’s and electronics are producing live glitches which emphasize the instability of these otherwise closed systems.

Natural Smooth Measures on the Leaves of the Unstable Manifold of Open Billiard Dynamical Systems

Richardson, Peter A. (Peter Adolph), 1955- 12 1900 (has links)
In this paper, we prove, for a certain class of open billiard dynamical systems, the existence of a family of smooth probability measures on the leaves of the dynamical system's unstable manifold. These measures describe the conditional asymptotic behavior of forward trajectories of the system. Furthermore, properties of these families are proven which are germane to the PYC programme for these systems. Strong sufficient conditions for the uniqueness of such families are given which depend upon geometric properties of the system's phase space. In particular, these results hold for a fairly nonrestrictive class of triangular configurations of scatterers.

A Novel Exercise Device for Users in Wheelchairs: A Study of Abdominal Muscle Activation

Campbell, Rebecca Jo 01 June 2011 (has links) (PDF)
This study evaluates the use of a wheelchair balance board. The balance board was created as a sensory stimulation tool for users with various disabilities. It was originally designed to create vestibular stimulation for the person after they were loaded on. This study was used as a way to test if the balance board could be used for other things such as physical therapy and exercise. Ten able-bodied individuals were used to show the functionality of the device. They were asked to perform six different abdominal exercises while the muscle activity of their rectus abdominis and external obliques was measured using EMG electrodes. The exercises performed included: abdominal crunch, reverse crunch, full vertical crunch, torso twist, seated crunch, and sitting abdominal bend down. The last three exercises were performed on both stable ground and on the wheelchair balance board. This study found that the balance board did not cause any negative effects in terms of the abdominal muscle activation. In some cases it actually increased the muscle activation compared to the stable and floor exercises. There were no cases where the balance board caused a decrease in the amount of muscle activation in comparison to the floor exercises. The highest values for any muscle group activated in the entire study was found to be on the balance board during the sitting abdominal bend down. This demonstrates that the balance board shows promise as a tool for stimulating muscles not traditionally activated for people in a wheelchair.

GEANT4 Simulations and Experimental Tests of a Silicon CD Detector

Chen, Jun 02 1900 (has links)

In nuclear astrophysics, there are still undiscovered areas involving unstable nuclei, like the nucleosynthesis in exploding stars. The unstable nuclei are extremely difficult to produce in the laboratory for study since they decay away quickly once they are formed. To make the unstable nuclei available in the laboratory, Canada has built one of the best facilities in the world for nuclear astrophysics studies with radioactive beams, called TRIUMF-ISAC. Its recent upgrade to ISAC-2 can produce even heavier radioactive beams with higher energy. To fully utilize the ISAC-2 facility, a high-segmented HPGe γ-ray detector-TIGRESS, has been developed to study exotic nuclei using the well-established technique of Coulomb Excitation.

As an essential part of the TIGRESS facility, auxiliary detectors, such as silicon detectors, are used to improve the sensitivity of the experiments through Doppler correction. Two types of silicon detectors will be used. One is the CD-shaped double-sided silicon strip detector, which is the topic of this thesis. The other one is the silicon barrel detector. This thesis will discuss the computer simulations and experimental tests of the CD detector.

Simulations were made using a simulation toolkit GEANT4, which was run under the Linux system. The goal was to test the hypothesis that measurements of the energies of heavy ions in Coulomb excitation may improve the Doppler correction by constraining the scattering location in a thick target. To test the performance of the simulated CD detector, simple simulations were performed for shooting calibration alpha particles from an 241Am source first directly onto the CD and second through a thin target onto the CD. The goal of additional simulations was to attempt to determine the corresponding scattering depth in a thick target by putting an energy cut on the spectrum of the scattered beam detected in the CD. These simulation results verify the possibility of such localization, though the resolution is not very good.

Experimental tests for the CD detector are aimed to obtain the energy resolution for each strip element of the CD and to have at least 8 channels instrumented in our test lab before this detector is sent to TIGRESS facility. The test station including electronics and detector systems and all results from initial tests are described in detail in this thesis.
/ Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Rodrigo Frehse Pereira.pdf: 4666622 bytes, checksum: b2dcf2959eef9f7fd82301c2e45ac87f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-03-01 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Unstable dimension variability (UDV) is an extreme form of nonhyperbolicity. It is a structurally stable phenomenon, typical for high dimensional chaotic systems, which implies severe restrictions to shadowing of perturbed solutions. Perturbations are unavoidable in modelling Physical phenomena, since no system can be made completely isolated, states and parameters cannot be determined without uncertainties and any numeric approach to such models is affected by truncation and/or roundoff errors. Thus, the lack of shadowability in systems exhibiting UDV presents a challenge for modelling. Aiming to unveil the effect of perturbations a class of nonhyperbolic systems is studied. These systems present transversal unstable dimension variability (TUDV), which means the dynamics can be split in a skew direct product form, i. e. the phase space is decomposed in two components: a hyperbolic chaotic one, called longitudinal, and a nonhyperbolic transversal one. Moreover, in the absence of perturbations, the longitudinal component is a global attractor of the system. A prototype composed of two coupled piecewise-linear chaotic maps is presented in order to study the TUDV effects. This system has an invariant subspace S which characterizes the complete chaos synchronization and UDV, when present, is transversal to it. Taking advantage of (piecewise) linearity of the equations, an analytical method for unstable periodic orbits’ computation is presented. The set of all unstable periodic orbits (UPOs) is one of the building block of chaotic dynamics and its properties provide valuable informations about the asymptotic behaviour of the system as, for instance, the invariant natural measure. Therefore, the TUDV’s intensity is analytically studied by computing the contrast measure, which quantifies the difference between the statistical weights associated to UPOs with different unstable dimension. The effect of perturbations is modelled by the introduction of a small parameter mismatch, instead of noise addition, in order to keep the model’s determinism. Consequently, the characterization of dynamics by means of UPOs is still possible. It is shown the existence of a dense set G of UPOs outside the invariant subspace consistent with a chaotic repeller. When perturbation takes place, G merges with the set H of UPOs previously in S, given rise to a new nonhyperbolic stationary state. The analysis of G ∪H provides a topological explanation to the behaviour of systems with TUDV under perturbations. Moreover, the relation between the set of UPOs embedded in a chaotic attractor and its natural measure, proven only for hyperbolic systems, is successfully applied to this system: the error between the natural measure estimated both numerically and by means of UPOs is shown to be decreasing with p, the considered UPOs’ period. It is conjectured the coincidence between both in limit. Hence, a positive answer to reliability of numerical estimation to natural measure in nonhyperbolic systems via unstable dimension variability is presented.

Advanced nonlinear stability analysis of boiling water nuclear reactors

Lange, Carsten 29 October 2009 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis is concerned with nonlinear analyses of BWR stability behaviour, contributing to a deeper understanding in this field. Despite negative feedback-coefficients of a BWR, there are operational points (OP) at which oscillatory instabilities occur. So far, a comprehensive and an in-depth understanding of the nonlinear BWR stability behaviour are missing, even though the impact of the significant physical parameters is well known. In particular, this concerns parameter regions in which linear stability indicators, like the asymptotic decay ratio, lose their meaning. Nonlinear stability analyses are usually carried out using integral (system) codes, describing the dynamical system by a system of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE). One aspect of nonlinear BWR stability analyses is to get an overview about different types of nonlinear stability behaviour and to examine the conditions of their occurrence. For these studies the application of system codes alone is inappropriate. Hence, in the context of this thesis, a novel approach to nonlinear BWR stability analyses, called RAM-ROM method, is developed. In the framework of this approach, system codes and reduced order models (ROM) are used as complementary tools to examine the stability characteristics of fixed points and periodic solutions of the system of nonlinear differential equations, describing the stability behaviour of a BWR loop. The main advantage of a ROM, which is a system of ordinary differential equations (ODE), is the possible coupling with specific methods of the nonlinear dynamics. This method reveals nonlinear phenomena in certain regions of system parameters without the need for solving the system of ROM equations. The stability properties of limit cycles generated in Hopf bifurcation points and the conditions of their occurrence are of particular interest. Finally, the nonlinear phenomena predicted by the ROM will be analysed in more details by the system code. Hence, the thesis is not focused on rendering more precisely linear stability indicators like DR. The objective of the ROM development is to develop a model as simple as possible from the mathematical and numerical point of view, while preserving the physics of the BWR stability behaviour. The ODEs of the ROM are deduced from the PDEs describing the dynamics of a BWR. The system of ODEs includes all spatial effects in an approximated (spatial averaged) manner, e.g. the space-time dependent neutron flux is expanded in terms of a complete set of orthogonal spatial neutron flux modes. In order to simulate the stability characteristics of the in-phase and out-of-phase oscillation mode, it is only necessary to take into account the fundamental mode and the first azimuthal mode. The ROM, originally developed at PSI in collaboration with the University of Illinois (PSI-Illinois-ROM), was upgraded in significant points: • Development and implementation of a new calculation methodology for the mode feedback reactivity coefficients (void and fuel temperature reactivity) • Development and implementation of a recirculation loop model; analysis and discussion of its impact on the in-phase and out-of-phase oscillation mode • Development of a novel physically justified approach for the calculation of the ROM input data • Discussion of the necessity of consideration of the effect of subcooled boiling in an approximate manner With the upgraded ROM, nonlinear BWR stability analyses are performed for three OPs (one for NPP Leibstadt (cycle7), one for NPP Ringhals (cycle14) and one for NPP Brunsbüttel (cycle16) for which measuring data of stability tests are available. In this thesis, the novel approach to nonlinear BWR stability analyses is extensively presented for NPP Leibstadt. In particular, the nonlinear analysis is carried out for an operational point (OP), in which an out-of-phase power oscillation has been observed in the scope of a stability test at the beginning of cycle 7 (KKLc7_rec4). The ROM predicts a saddle-node bifurcation of cycles, occurring in the linear stable region, close to the KKLc7_rec4-OP. This result allows a new interpretation of the stability behaviour around the KKLc7_rec4-OP. The results of this thesis confirm that the RAM-ROM methodology is qualified for nonlinear BWR stability analyses.
