Place Differentiation: Redeveloping the Distillery District, Toronto

Mathews, Vanessa Kirsty 23 February 2011 (has links)
What role does place differentiation play in contemporary urban redevelopment processes, and how is it constructed, practiced, and governed? Under heightened forms of interurban competition fueled by processes of globalization, there is a desire by place-makers to construct and market a unique sense of place. While there is consensus that place promotion plays a role in reconstructing landscapes, how place differentiation operates – and can be operationalized – in processes of urban redevelopment is under-theorized in the literature. In this thesis, I produce a typology of four strategies of differentiation – negation, coherence, residue, multiplicity – which reside within capital transformations and which require activation by a set of social actors. I situate these ideas via an examination of the redevelopment of the Gooderham and Worts distillery, renamed the Distillery District, which opened to the public in 2003. Under the direction of the private sector, the site was transformed from a space of alcohol production to a space of cultural consumption. The developers used a two pronged approach for the site’s redevelopment: historic preservation and arts-led regeneration. Using a mixed method approach including textual analysis, in-depth interviews, visual analysis, and site observation, I examine the strategies used to market the Distillery as a distinct place, and the effects of this marketing strategy on the valuation of art, history, and space. Two central arguments direct the thesis: first, in an attempt to construct place differentiation, what emerges is a sense of sameness which limits the potential of the district and produces a disconnect between the space and its users; second, it is only by understanding how differentiation operates in discourse and practice that alternative formations of place-making can emerge and socio-spatial disconnectedness can be rethought.

Montreal suburban nonplaces : Famous Players theatres and the deterioration of urban community

Braun, Lori January 2002 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to examine the way in which economics shape suburban Famous Players megaplexes in Montreal and how they abet a destruction of urban community. I use Jameson and the critique of the Situationiste International to demonstrate the value, in this case, of examining the relationship between the economic and community. Jameson aptly describes an economic disorientation and identity crisis created by postmodern capitalism. The SI brings to light a loss of enchantment resulting from mass produced products and spaces. I describe the way in which the symbolism, architecture, and aesthetics of the megaplex are a direct result of the space's capitalist needs and form a place that is alienated, in every sense, to locality. Sorkin and Auge serve to further illustrate the way in which postmodern spaces are rootless non-places and risk destroying vital aspects of locality. I will also explore, using Buck-Morss and Eagleton, how the bonds of the megaplex non-place community are maintained through the sensual pleasure of virtual entertainment. I will argue that this entertainment and space, dislocated from community, abets a slow deterioration of identity with relation to place.

This work characterized the status of quality of life in Minas Gerais State, guided by the manageable human development perspective, in 1991 and 2000 and its evolution in the period. Initially, the conceptual background was established by emphasizing the aspects that constitute the mentioned perspective and that constrained the database formulation embraced in this work. To characterize the state s situation, the classification through Principal Component Analysis PCA was carried out, which resulted in a set of components that explain the situation in both moments. The cartographical generation, characterization and analysis followed this. Thus, the infrastructure and individual capabilities aspects were identified and were analyzed through cartograms. The obtained results were confronted with the Municipal Human Development Index M-HDI, and it was possible to verify a high correlation between them. The analysis emphasized a non-homogeneous situation, being the Minas Gerais State geographically divided into two distinct realities the north presented the lowest levels of quality of life and the south, better conditions. In this set, Belo Horizonte deeply differs from the rest of the state. At the end, the situation evolution in the period was analyzed in terms of the relevant aspects that constitute the quality of life in the State.

Sendo assim, a presente pesquisa procura analisar o impacto ambiental do processo de exploração não somente no meio físico, mas também / The process of transformation of the space towards the production of infrastructures that promote social well-being, security and the right to housing are today, and probably always have been, the main cause of fairness by maintaining the natural balance of the environment. The mining activity, particularly, is characterized as one of the most severe forms of environmental degradation, because of the magnitude of the space to be explored, suppression of native vegetation characterization of the natural landscape, insertion of contaminants in the extraction process, among other evils. Apart from these directly related to the exploration process, there are those linked to the transport process, processing and marketing of raw materials mined. It soon becomes apparent that cities are born in environmentally impaired sites and remains in critical condition over time, as the urban ecosystem is always in the expansion process. Thus, the choice of the subject matter of this work is due to analysis of the problem of understanding existing between the quality of life and the constant mining activity in a degraded area. Directly search is an investigation about the socio-environmental conflicts associated with the use and urban degradation footprint resulting from mineral extraction activity that has the potential ability to achieve the communities to its surroundings. Thus, the spatial area for this research was the Vila Monte Verde, located in the Industrial City neighborhood located in the northern part of the city of Teresina, Piauí state capital. Justified the selection of this village, because the growing and intense material mineral extraction activity, used in construction and the proximity of these areas to residential communities as well As the present study seeks to prove that the environmental impact of the exploration process does not occur only the physical environment but also the social aspects, and how these transformations and...

Fagliari, Gabriela Scuta. January 2017 (has links)
Os resultados demonstram que os condomínios de residências secundárias trazem benefícios e prejuízos à sociedade das áreas onde são criados, reproduzindo a realidade de desigualdade e injustiça social / Abstract: Second home is the residential property not used permanently, which does not constitute the place of primary residence of a particular household. The actual occurrence of this type of property is significant, mainly in the surroundings of large cities. The space resulting from the agglomeration of second homes in private developments is particularly differentiated. This sort of urbanization differs substantially from other forms of land use and occupation, not constituting urban nor rural spaces. Based on the relevance and differentiation of this phenomenon, the objective established for this work was to analyze the influence of second homes developments in the space production and organization. This work described and analyzed the land use and occupation process resulting from the implementation of second homes developments on Bunjiro Nakao Highway (SP-250), in the proximities of São Paulo Metropolitan Region (RMSP). The analysis was based on bibliographical and documental surveys, fieldwork, in-depth interviews and quantitative data analysis. The study presents the reality of second homes developments and their environments, describing the creation process, characteristics and dynamics of this type of specialized space. The logic of this phenomenon is discussed in the perspective of the interaction and conflicts between the different groups of social agents involved, including owners of second homes, landowners, real state corporations, residents of the surroundings and public agents. The results show that second homes developments bring benefits and losses to the society, reproducing the reality of inequality and social injustice, but at the same time generating income and employment / Doutor
