The Role of Gender in Kuwait's Architecture

Redha, Ahmad 17 March 2014 (has links)
This thesis explores the different methods of gender segregation in both the home and public realm in Kuwait. The main forms of segregation exists both physically, in the form of a wall barrier, and mentally, in the way people are raised in Middle Eastern traditional and cultural norms. The goal of this thesis is to analyze the living patterns in terms of age, clan, and gender and to create a new design method for a home where it incorporates old traditional Middle Eastern home architectural styles. The new design method enhances the living environment, increases access to outdoor spaces, and improves living conditions of the servants living and working in the home.

refin [d]ing process

Ziegler, Jochen 11 May 1998 (has links)
This thesis marks a point where the priorities determining my occupation with architecture might shift. In part it is a reflection of an approach to architecture, which generates an awareness that can be extended to an environment of practice. This awareness should provide direction towards the making of architecture, regardless to the number of constraints or limitations which reality might impose. This project is the documenting vehicle for the examination of a design process. The proposal is the evidence of this design process. Its documentation should prove and expose qualities which derived from my approach to architecture. / Master of Architecture

A política de habitação de interesse social e a dimensão urbana em municípios da Amazônia/Pará / The policy of social housing and the urban dimension in municipalities of the Amazon/Pará

Ribeiro, Rovaine 06 March 2015 (has links)
This research seeks to understand the relationship between the urban policy of social housing in Brazil in its recente period and the urban-regional diversity of the Amazon and in particular on some municipalities in Pará. Accorddingly, we point out how central questions: a) The relationship between urban policy of social housing in Brazil and the urban-regional diversity of the municipalities of the Amazon/Pará; b) As a result of the above assumption, two main issues are outlined, the first refers to the idea of distortion of the housing problem and its territorial reflex; the second concerns the role of the state and the logic of power relations in the development of their shares underlying this case, the development of urban policy. Thus it is necessary to understand the paradox of recognition/non-recognition of the urban-regional diversity and population of municipalities, whereas at the same time that the policy provides for the contemplation of city law and the social function of the city and property, their effectiveness ultimately fail at the margins of the city, just those guys who have lived their daily realities built on the river bank or road, and they see these diverse and unique spatial practices, and homogeneized within the urban planning through representations that these spaces are created, but which in turn constitute the space of possible insofar as they are practical in wastewater spatial/urban (Lefebvre, 2001).

Aspects of community participation among slum dwellers in achieving housing in Bombay

Desai, Vandana January 1992 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with the housing and service needs of the poor (slum dwellers) in Bombay and how they are articulated and satisfied. It discusses how the poor perceive the constraints on slum servicing and improvement, their involvement in community organizations, and the role the community and its leaders play in influencing state action. Since housing and servicing issues directly impinge on the interests of politicians and bureaucrats as well as on those of the poor, patterns of provision mirror closely the nature of the relationship between the poor and how political and administrative power operates at various levels. Chapter 1 provides the research aims and objectives while Chapter 2 reviews the literature on community participation. Chapter 3 on Bombay places housing development in context and also serves as background study to the thesis. This research studies three different slum settlements housing migrants to Bombay. Two surveys of these three slum settlements were carried out, involving interviews with 135 households. Chapter 4 describes the characteristics of these households, while chapters 5, 6, and 7 give the arguments of the thesis. It is shown that, despite an established system of representative community organisations and a pro-participation rhetoric in bureaucratic discourse, most slum dwellers are excluded from participating in decision-making. A patron-client relationship exists between politicians, bureaucrats and community leaders, both in determining the community leaders' power as well as the level of services and physical benefits that he/she could win for the slum community. Leaders are generally better educated, better employed, more prosperous and highly motivated than most of their community. The NGO in this study has acted mainly as intermediary between the government and the slum-dwellers.

Green Infrastructure: The Landscape of Urban EcoHousing

Upchurch, Meredith 11 July 2006 (has links)
Cities are facing environmental crises like never before, with problems of excess water runoff, degraded water quality, air pollution, and energy use reaching critical levels. The development of urban areas and the built environment is the primary cause of these problems and the built environment needs to be a part of the solution. This design thesis project produces a prototype design for the Urban EcoHousing development on a city block in Alexandria, Virginia. Design goals for the project connect the "Ecological Services of the Urban Landscape" to the "Rights of the Urban EcoHousing Resident" to create livable green spaces that can serve ecological functions and give the residents spaces to use. A comparison study with a conventional housing development at the same location illustrates that ecohousing can meet the requirements of the conventional development while providing superior results for the residents and the environment. / Master of Landscape Architecture

It is also the study of how the implementation of the Programa Minha Casa Minha Vida law has brought about the real achievement of citizenship, by promoting the regularization of social interest, and by guaranteeing the right to housing, under the aspects of the social function of land and of the democratization of access to it. The study was prepared using literature review of existing legislation and field research experience in Jardim Mariliza. It is this a case of regularization of a public square where several families were settled. Later, the area was removed for the purpose of regularization of social interest, making it the block 86-A in Jardim Mariliza where families earned the right to ownership of their urban settlement.
