Urban Flood Water Management Systems in Semi-Arid Regions: Model Extension, Design and Application: Project Completion ReportArai, K., Ince, S., Resnick, S. D. January 1977 (has links)
Project Completion Report, OWRT Project No. A-049-ARIZ / Agreement No. 14-31-0001-4003 / Project Dates: July 1, 1973 - June 30, 1974. / Acknowledgement: The work upon which this report is based was supported by funds provided by the United States Department of the Interior, Office of Water Research and Technology, as authorized under the Water Resources Research Act of 1964. / A non-linear reservoir model is used to represent the rainfall-runoff relationships for thunderstorms on the urban watersheds of Tucson, Arizona. Two types of computer programs are developed: a calibration program to obtain a best -fit calculated hydrograph; and a verification program to generate storm hydrographs given the watershed characteristics and a hyetograph. Calibration reveals the relationship of the model parameters, namely, (f) the inflow coefficient, (a) the constant coefficient, and (TL) the time lag, to the total rainfall, drainage area, channel length, and infiltration capacity of the watershed. The average discrepancy between the predicted hydrograph and the actual hydrograph for Tucson urban watersheds is 20 -25 percent.

Improving microbial fate and transport modeling to support TMDL development in an urban watershedLiao, Hehuan 30 April 2015 (has links)
Pathogen contamination, typically quantified by elevated levels of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB), remains the leading cause of surface water-quality impairments in the United States. Continuous watershed-scale models are typically employed to facilitate Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) restoration efforts. Due to limited understanding of microbial fate and transport, predictions of FIB concentrations are associated with considerable uncertainty relative to other water-quality contaminants. By focusing on a data-rich instrumented urban watershed, this study aims to improve understanding of microbial fate and transport processes. Weekly FIB concentrations in both the water column and streambed sediments were monitored for one year, and statistical correlations with hydrometeorological and physicochemical variables were identified. An intensive six storm intra-sampling campaign quantified and contrasted loading trends of both traditional regulatory FIB and emerging Microbial Source Tracking (MST) markers. Together, these intensive monitoring efforts facilitated evaluation of the impacts of bacteria-sediment interactions on the predictions of daily FIB concentrations in Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF) over multiple years. While superior overall model performance was demonstrated as compared to earlier efforts, the inclusion of bacteria-sediment interactions did not improve performance. Large wet-weather microbial loading appears to have dwarfed the effects of FIB release and resuspension from sediment. Although wet-weather loading is generally considered as a primary source of waterbody microbial loads, dry-weather periods are more directly associated with public health concern, which may be a more suitable area for future model-refinement efforts. Site evaluation is critical to determine whether the added model complexity and effort associated with partitioning phases of FIB can be sufficiently offset by gains in predictive capacity. Finally, a stochastic framework to translate simulated daily FIB concentrations into estimates of human illness risks is presented that can be can be readily integrated into existing TMDLs. As even small concentrations of FIB from human sources are associated with great risk, and monitoring efforts indicated moderate/high levels of human-associated MST marker in this watershed, remediation efforts to protect public health would be best directed toward infrastructure improvements. Uncertainty analysis indicates more site-specific knowledge of pathogen presence and densities would best improve the estimation of illness risks. / Ph. D.

DiagnÃstico georreferenciado do uso e ocupaÃÃo do solo nas Ãreas de preservaÃÃo permanente (APP) da Sub-bacia do Rio CocÃ, Fortaleza â CE / Georeferenced Diagnosis of Use and Land Cover on the Permanent Preservation Area (APP) Of Sub-Basin B1, River Cocà Basin, Fortaleza-CE.Laiz HÃrida Siqueira de AraÃjo 28 May 2012 (has links)
This research was mainly aimed at making the georeferenced diagnosis of the use and occupation of the lands directly influenced for the Sub-Basin B1 of the great basin of the Coco River, in Fortaleza, CearÃ, from the appreciation of the occupancy conditions of the APP constituents of the eight watersheds, all of that inserted in the urban environment and too much impacted by urbanization that has occurred in recent decades in Fortaleza. In this sense, it was realized a documentary search in public agencies and through the internet, involving legislation, reports, statements and cartographic records of the studied area, besides several field visits, to consolidate the information. However, the scarcity of data has generated the need to prepare thematic maps that make possible the diagnosis. This way, based on the Forest Code deliberations, in Resolutions n 303/02 and 369/06 from Conama, and the Municipal Decree n 12.450/08, it was elaborated georeferenced maps delimiting the APP, using as reference orthophotos ,of flights 2004 and 2010, at UTM â zone 24S, South American Datum1969 (SAD 69) coordinate, using ArcGis, version 9.3 program. It Was verified that the municipal legislation presents more permissive than federal determinations reducing, in the most of cases, the APP of this sub-basin. In consequence of that, there is too much regular and irregular occupation of APP lands, that causes large gaps in relation to riparian vegetation. It is noteworthy that, even taking part of the resolution n 369/06 from Conama, there is an intense surface sealing that potentiates the vulnerability of environmental degradation in this area. In this scenario, it becomes evident the predatory use of these natural resources restricting the multiple uses and actions that promote sustainable development. This way, it is proposed recovery actions and protection of these ecosystems trying to rebalance them, since they have great importance in the landscape and improving the quality of life. Finally, it is suggested a greater commitment of public agencies to facilitate the accessibility of information about environmental issues in the city, so that, there is greater interaction between academia and public administration, generating information that can support decision making.

Using PCSWMM to simulate first flush and assess performance of extended dry detention ponds as structural stormwater BMPs in a large polluted urban watershedKabbani, Muhieddine Saadeddine 01 May 2015 (has links)
Urbanization and increase of impervious areas impact stormwater runoff and can pollute receiving waters. Total suspended solids (TSS) are of particular concern as they can act as a transport agent for other pollutants. Moreover, the existence of the first flush phenomenon (FF), whereby the first stage of storm runoff is the most concentrated, can also have profound ecological effects on receiving waters. Understanding the various types of pollutants in watershed stormwater, their correlation with rainfall parameters (precipitation depth and previous dry days) and with TSS, and the existence of FF is crucial to the design of the most suitable structural best management practice (BMP) that can mitigate their harm. Personal Computer Storm Water Management Model (PCSWMM) is a well-known computer model that can simulate urban runoff quantity and quality and model BMPs. The use of PCSWMM to simulate the first flush phenomenon and to evaluate the effectiveness of structural BMPs has not been previously investigated for a large urban watershed with seriously polluted stormwater runoff.
This research is concerned with the study of a framework for designing structural best management practices (BMPs) for stormwater management in a large watershed that is based on comprehensive analysis of pollutants of concern, rainfall parameters of influence, and the existence of FF. The framework was examined using the PCSWMM computer model in the St Anthony Park watershed, an urban watershed in St Paul, Minnesota with a large drainage area of 3,418 acres that discharges directly into the Mississippi River via a storm tunnel. A comprehensive study was undertaken to characterize the overall St. Anthony Park watershed stormwater quality trends for the period of record 2005-2013 for heavy metals, nutrients (ammonia and total phosphorus), sediment (TSS), and bacteria (E. coli). Stormwater was found to be highly contaminated as measured by exceedance of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) water quality standards and as compared to data obtained from the National Stormwater Quality Database (NSQD). None of the examined parameters significantly correlated with precipitation depth. Concentrations of most heavy metals, total phosphorus and TSS positively correlated with previous dry days, and most pollutants correlated positively with TSS, which provided a strong rationale for using TSS as a representative pollutant in PCSWMM and in examining BMP efficiency. Moreover, BMPs that targeted the particulate fraction in stormwater would be the most efficient in reducing stormwater pollution.
A PCSWMM model was built based on the existing drainage system of the watershed, which consisted of inlet structures, manholes, pipes and deep manholes that connect the network pipes to a deep drainage tunnel discharging directly into Mississippi River. The model was calibrated and validated using recorded storm and runoff data. FF was numerically investigated by simulating pollutant generation and washoff. Using three different numerical definitions of FF, the existence of FF could be simulated, and was subsequently reduced by simulating extended dry detention ponds in the watershed.
Extended dry detention ponds (EDDPs) are basins whose outlets are designed to detain stormwater runoff for a calculated time that allows particles and associated pollutants to settle. Extended dry detention ponds are a potential BMP option that could efficiently control both water quantity (by diverting initial volumes of stormwater, thus addressing FF) and quality (by reducing suspending pollutants, thus addressing TSS and co-contaminants). Moreover, they are the least-expensive stormwater treatment practice on a cost per treated unit area. Two location-based designs were examined. The first was an EDDP at the main outfall (OFmain), while the second was a set of seven smaller EDDPs within the vicinity of deeper manholes of the deep tunnel (distributed EDDPs). Distributed EDDPs were similar to the OFmain EDDP at reducing peak stormwater flow (52-61%) but superior in reducing TSS loads (20-25% for small particles and 43-45% for larger particles based on the particle sedimentation rate removal constant k) and in reducing peak TSS loads (67-75%). These efficiencies were obtained using the dynamic and kinematic wave routing methods, indicating that they could be used interchangeably for this watershed. The steady state routing method produced unrealistic results and was subsequently excluded from FF analysis. Finally, distributed EDDPs were superior to OFmain EDDP at eliminating FF per the stringent fifth definition (Δ > 0.2). This was true for small values of k. However, larger values of k and other FF tests (above the 45º no-flush line and FF coefficient b < 1) showed that BMP implementation overall failed to completely eliminate FF. This suggested that the extended time required by EDDPs to efficiently remove pollutants from stormwater via settling would compromise their ability to completely eliminate FF.
In conclusion, a comprehensive framework was applied so as to better design the most efficient BMPs by characterizing the overall St. Anthony Park watershed stormwater pollutants, their correlation with rainfall parameters and with TSS, and the magnitude of FF. A cost-effective, rapid, and accurate method to simulate FF and study the optimal BMP design was thus implemented for a large urban watershed through the PCSWMM model.

Proposta metodológica para análise da qualidade ambiental e de vida urbana na cidade de Marabá/PA: a bacia hidrográfica da Grota Criminosa / Methodological proposal for analysis of environmental and urban life quality in the city of Marabá / PA: The Grota Criminosa WatershedSilva, Gustavo da 03 July 2019 (has links)
The objective of the methodological proposal was to analyze the environmental and urban life quality of the river basin grota criminosa, in Marabá-PA, in an objective manner, proposing to elaborate the urban land use charts and the environmental indicators charts such as water supply, sanitary sewage , collection of garbage, paving of roads, population density, occupation and flood, using the environmental factors of contamination of surface water, groundwater, dengue cases and canine visceral leishmaniasis, analyzing and discussing the environmental impacts caused by urbanization in order to improvements to this environmental quality and urban life. It was found that urban land use in the basin has a predominance of residential areas and some sectors with commercial and institutional areas in which good parts of these regions have poor water supply and lack of sanitary sewage. The collection of garbage has advanced in relation to the routes of the trucks in the sectors, the pavement of the roads advanced in some areas as, for example, in the district Km 7 and in the leaves 22 and 23. Due to the lack of sanitary sewage and the precariousness of the supply of water, surface and groundwater have contamination of fecal and total coliforms, the number of dengue cases between the years 2015, 2016 and 2017 had alternation, however, with a high number of cases, canine visceral leishmaniasis in 2017 had the number of positive cases is very high, this is due to the precariousness of the sanitary sewage in the basin. In the production of letters of environmental quality and urban life, he established the weights assigned by the technicians of the municipal agencies (secretariat of environment, secretariat of urban planning, superintendence of urban development, Zoonoses Control Center, Laboratory of Water Quality and Company in this case, there was a difference in some environmental quality and urban life charts, however, the environmental indicators of water supply and sanitary sewage had weights of greater importance, showing the reality of the sectors, since a large part of the blocks was between the classes bad, bad and intermediate. Thus, in order to increase the environmental quality and urban life of the water parting of the criminal grotto, there must be investment in water supply and sanitary sewage and concurrently in the regularization of the occupation areas in the basin.

Determinação de parâmetros hidrológicos por técnicas de sensoriamento remoto em macrodrenagem urbana / Determination of hydrological parameters by remote sensing techniques in urban macrodrainageMartins, Leandro Guimarães Bais 11 May 2012 (has links)
In urban centers, precipitation always been related to problems such as floods and spread of disease. To solve them, it is common to make hydraulic interventions in the urban drainage systems. For this, it is necessary to know the conditions of the watershed and the consequences that any change in the environment can cause. Therefore, hydrological models are used to predict the river behavior in opposite to precipitation events, increasing the efficiency of the hydraulic interventions and reducing the associated risks to these. For the use of models, it is necessary to have several hydrological parameters related to the basin such as drainage area, river length, slope of the thalweg, type of soil cover etc. Trough the technological advancement, the parameter determination becomes more accurate as well as the models, and the Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing appear as powerful tools to support hydrological studies. In this study, we have applied the automatic supervised classification process by the Object-Oriented Analysis method to a high resolution satellite image of the córrego do Gregório watershed, to classify soil coverage and to determine the hydrological parameters curve-number (CN by the SCS method), vegetation degree (PP), area (A), length (L), and slope of thalwegs (S) of the sub-basins of the córrego do Gregório watershed, for which the results were quite satisfactory. Finally, a hydrological model for the São Carlos macrodrainage system called EESC model (1993) was updated with the new parameters, obtaining final hydrographs with differences from the original model up to 33.96% for peak discharge (Qp), 77.78% for peak time (tp) and 29.86% for total volume of runoff.

Previsão de enchentes para o plano diretor de drenagem urbana de São Carlos (PDDUSC) na bacia escola do córrego do Gregório / Flood prediction at córrego do Gregório watershed for São Carlos urban drainage master plan (PDDUSC)Barros, Regina Mambeli 12 May 2005 (has links)
However, the present scenario shows expensive, on-site anti-flood works in São Carlos. Due to the absence of previous watershed planning, the area around the Municipality Market (MMSC) is continuously threatened by overspilling inundation events in the floodplain of the Gregorio river. Aim of this work is to provide supporting information to decision-making in the Master Plan using structural and nonstructural measures, as flood zoning of risk-prone areas. Critical flood events that produced inundation at MMSC were identified interviewing inhabitants living in these urban risk-areas. Those critical events were simulated with runoff-stormflow transformation and wave routing by the concentrated model IPHS-1 and the distributed model HIDRORAS, which results were compared. Input data were calibrated from monitored flood events. Uncertainties inherent to each model were identified. Results depict initial yardsticks for flood mapping to be included in the Master Plan agenda. Structural measures of flooding control, consisting in a retention basin without excavation, and non-structural measures, as increase of the infiltration area, were investigated. It came out that for urban watersheds as the Gregório basin, changes in the flow patterns due to urban paths are better represented by the distributed model HIDRORAS. However, a portion of uncertainties for this model, like the influence of soils saturated hydraulic conductivity still remain

Proposta de um modelo de gestão integrada de águas urbanas em escala de lote residencial: alcances e limitações / Proposal for a model of integrated management of urban water scale of residential lot: scope and limitationsGalavoti, Ricardo Camilo 24 February 2012 (has links)
This research aimed as its main goal the development of contributions to a proposal for a public policy to the creation of a new urban waters management model, through the development and establishment, at urban lot scale, of an integrated selective drainage system and rainwater use, and reuse of treated domestic sewage, named \"Smart Drainage and Reuse System\" (SD&RS). The research was accomplished at an experimental peri-urban site, named Peri-Urban Experimental Lot, provided by a cover of zinc roof tiles, and its resulting data compared to data generated on a previous study accomplished at another two experimental sites, namely: Undergraduate Learning Support Laboratory-1 and 2 (LAEGs-1 and 2), respectively provided of: compressed tiles made of recycled long-life milk packaging (LAEG-1); and extensive green roof (LAEG-2). For handling of urban waters in residential lot scale, two main types of contribution were considered: 1) Waters from sanitary sewers, treated in a Septic Cesspool Biodigester (SCB) EMBRAPA Model, and 2) Rainwater, collected and treated in a Rainwater Use System (RUS), whose basic conception was the same for the three experimental sites. For the zinc roof, 6 (six) successive sampling series were performed, for 6 (six) rainfall events, in 7 (seven) sampling points of the Rainwater Use System (RUS), and 38 (thirty-eight) physicochemical and biological water quality variables were analysed. The results analysis, compared to the other roofs, suggested, according to the related regulations, a predominant use to non-potable purposes, and since previous rainwater disinfection. For the SCB, 15 (fifteen) alternated sampling series were performed, whose results indicated a still limitated reuse possibility for sanitary sewage. Despite of the results of the present study indicated that the new urban waters management model requires suitability, they offer a possibility of solution to old and actual challenges in urban waters management, since they provided elements for the design of a new public policy named here \"Urban Waters Management Federal Policy\", which presents interfaces with previous policies, like the Water Law.
