Um americano na metrópole [latino-americana]. Richard Morse e a história cultural urbana de São Paulo, 1947-1970 / An american in the metropolis [Latin America]. Richard Morse and the urban cultural history of São Paulo, 1947-1970Castro, Ana Claudia Veiga de 15 May 2013 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the work of the American historian Richard Morse (1922-2001) on the history of São Paulo (Brazil). This work is examined here from three different perspectives - urban history, cultural history and as part of the urbanization of Latin American cities discussion. Entering on the urban historical studies in the U.S. and Brazil, at the time of its constitution, the thesis aims at contributing to the urban history field in order to fill certain gaps in the historiography of the city of São Paulo. By retracing the links between city, history and literature that seems to contain the work, the thesis contributes to the discussion of an urban cultural history of São Paulo. Recognizing the author as a key person in the establishment of the debate on the Latin American city between the 1940s and 1970s - precisely the period in which are held the three editions - it also allows the examination of the work and shed light on fundamental decades of urbanization in Latin America, taking up issues and questions about the ongoing metropolisation in the city of São Paulo and in the Latin American continent.

Urban land policy and the provision of housing in Canada, 1900-1985Gordon, Michael Lynn Harvey January 1985 (has links)
This thesis investigates one of the major factors in the supply and cost of housing, land. The hypothesis of this thesis is that a principal reason why Canada continues to have a housing problem is that government housing policy has treated land as a market commodity much like any other and has rarely examined, let alone challenged, the ramifications of this assumption in terms of its impact on the supply, quality and price of housing. The examination of the land component of urban housing is pursued by exploring the following research questions: How have Canadian government officials, politicians and reformers defined the urban land problem as it relates to housing and what land policies have been considered and implemented in relation to housing problems? The public, professional and academic discussion of these questions is pursued by a review of the professional and academic literature, municipal plans, technical reports and government studies and the debates on housing and urban land policy in the federal parliament. The thesis is divided into two parts. First, the philosophy of private landownership and the basic thrust of public land policy is examined. Most attention is given to the nature of property rights and their protection and enforcement by government as it is the most fundamental land policy. Also, the nature of urbanization and the intervention of government in urban development and housing since 1900 is reviewed. Second, an historical overview of land policy and the provision of housing is provided. This discussion is divided into four historical periods: 1900-1929, 1930-1939, 1940-1969, 1970-1985. The constraints on and opportunities for urban land policy are examined and the nature of land policy in each period is discussed. There have been, in general, five categories of land policies adopted since 1900: land use zoning, subdivision regulation, public infrastructure and servicing programmes, public land assembly programmes and unearned increment taxes. These policies have emphasized the treatment of land as a privately held market commodity. There is a conflict between the desires of private land owners to maximize the return on their land and the need of the broader community to obtain land for housing at prices which make affordable and physically adequate housing feasible. This conflict is at the crux of the urban land problem. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Community and Regional Planning (SCARP), School of / Graduate

Previous issue date: 2010-02-23 / This paper addresses the traditions of the African-Brazilian religious who remained in urban territory over the years of growth and expansion of the urban city of Sao Paulo. Two subjects are addressed: the social conditions of the history of African-Brazilian religions in the development of the S?o Paulo metropolis and the legitimacy of these religious practices in urban territory. With these statements, we intend to develop a research into affinity with the current discussions about environmental, cultural and material inheritance, and find aspects of their social identity, memory and notions of belonging to urban areas. A history of Christchurch home gardening from colonisation to the Queen's visit: gardening culture in a particular society and environmentMorris, Matt January 2006 (has links)
Garden histories since the mid 1990s have increasingly turned to studies of vernacular gardens as sites of identity formation. More recently, the development of environmental history and specifically urban environmental history has started to show how vernacular gardening in suburban and urban spaces has contributed to changes in urban environments. Relatively little work on home gardening history in this sense has been undertaken in the New Zealand context, while in Australia such work is well underway. This study augments knowledge of home gardening history in New Zealand by focussing on one urban area, Christchurch, known both as the 'Garden City' and as 'one of the most English cities outside of England'. An examination of gardening literature over the period from European colonisation in 1850 to the first visit to the city by a reigning monarch in 1954 highlights changes in gardening tropes rather than particular garden fashions or elements. The four principal tropes of abundance, beauty, protection and sustenance, each supported with a particular kind of ritual-like garden competition, show how gardening discourses related to ideas about the maintenance of the social and cultural order. A more objective measure of attitudes to gardens is gained by examining 1823 property advertisements across the period. Categorised by suburb this analysis shows a level of gardening variation across the city. Following this analysis, case studies of four suburbs in three areas were undertaken. These were based primarily on oral histories and reveal the extent of gardening variation across the city, and the limited but significant effect that gardening discourses had on gardens. This suggests methodological problems with many studies of vernacular gardens, as well as opportunities for further studies. This thesis also demonstrates the value of home gardening histories to urban environmental history, particularly with regard to the former colonies of the British Empire.

Multispecies Urban Space and History: : Dogs and Other Nonhuman Animals in 19th Century StockholmJoshi, Mirabel January 2015 (has links)
This text aims to place nonhuman animals at the core of urban space and history to provide an insight into the life and materiality of dogs in Stockholm 1824-1920. The theoretical possibilities of more-than-human enquiries into history are discussed along with non-human animals as historical beings together with humans creating a common history (Ingold 2000, Whatmore 2002). Moreover nonhuman animals are discussed and incorporated in an exploration into using what is here discussed as a multispecies narrative and used as an analytical tool to try to avoid the pitfalls of representationalism. It is also introduced as a possible new methodology to approaching the urban landscape within the field of environmental history. The main empirical material of dogs in nineteenth century Stockholm are records from the city dog pound along with records of dog tax and rabies. Other than archive material a wide range of material contemporary to the research period such as art, photography and literature is used as part of a broad exploration of nonhuman animals as integral in materiality of Stockholm and as historical beings. Findings of the study confirm that dogs and other nonhuman animals hugely impacted both the spatial structure and social space of Stockholm and that this impact transformed over the research period defined by societal changes. More specifically the study shows that dogs played an important role as free roaming scavengers and were for this reason accepted as an integral part of the city in the nineteenth century in Stockholm. Later in the research period when the city became more regulated this role started to change and dogs were not accepted loose on the streets to the same degree and transformed into pets and symbols of social mobility and class. Regarding the use of a multispecies narrative the conclusion that can be drawn form this thesis is that is opens up for discussions on the materiality of urban space and history.
