Analyse de documents et du comportement des utilisateurs pour améliorer l'accès à l'information / Analysis of documents and user behavior to improve information access

L'augmentation constante du nombre de documents disponibles et des moyens d'accès transforme les pratiques de recherche d'information. Depuis quelques années, de plus en plus de plateformes de recherche d'information à destination des chercheurs ou du grand public font leur apparition sur la toile. Ce flot d'information est bien évidemment une opportunité pour les utilisateurs mais ils sont maintenant confrontés à de nouveaux problèmes. Auparavant, la principale problématique des chercheurs était de savoir si une information existait. Aujourd'hui, il est plutôt question de savoir comment accéder à une information pertinente. Pour résoudre ce problème, deux leviers d'action seront étudiés dans cette thèse. Nous pensons qu'il est avant tout important d'identifier l'usage qui est fait des principaux moyens d'accès à l'information. Être capable d'interpréter le comportement des utilisateurs est une étape nécessaire pour d'abord identifier ce que ces derniers comprennent des systèmes de recherche, et ensuite ce qui doit être approfondi. En effet, la plupart de ces systèmes agissent comme des boîtes noires qui masquent les différents processus sous-jacents. Si ces mécanismes n'ont pas besoin d'être entièrement maitrisés par les utilisateurs, ils ont cependant un impact majeur qui doit être pris en compte dans l'exploitation des résultats. Pourquoi le moteur de recherche me renvoie-t-il ces résultats ? Pourquoi ce document est-il plus pertinent qu'un autre ? Ces questions apparemment banales sont pourtant essentielles à une recherche d'information critique. Nous pensons que les utilisateurs ont le droit et le devoir de s'interroger sur la pertinence des outils informatiques mis à leur disposition. Pour les aider dans cette tâche, nous avons développé une plateforme de recherche d'information en ligne à double usage. Elle peut tout d'abord être utilisée pour l'observation et la compréhension du comportement des utilisateurs. De plus, elle peut aussi être utilisée comme support pédagogique, pour mettre en évidence les différents biais de recherche auxquels les utilisateurs sont confrontés. Dans le même temps, ces outils doivent être améliorés. Nous prenons dans cette thèse l'exemple de la qualité des documents qui a un impact certain sur leur accessibilité. La quantité de documents disponibles ne cessant d'augmenter, les opérateurs humains sont de moins en moins capables de les corriger manuellement et de s'assurer de leur qualité. Il est donc nécessaire de mettre en place de nouvelles stratégies pour améliorer le fonctionnement des systèmes de recherche. Nous proposons dans cette thèse une méthode pour automatiquement identifier et corriger certaines erreurs générées par les processus automatiques d'extraction d'information (en particulier l'OCR). / The constant increase of available documents and tools to access them has led to a change of research practices. For a few years now, more and more information retrieval platforms are made available online to the scientific community or the public. This data deluge is a great opportunity for users seeking information. However, it comes with new problems and new challenges to overcome. Formerly, the main issue for researchers was to identify if a particular resource existed. Today, the challenge is more about finding how to access pertinent information. We have identified two distinct levers to limit the impact of this new search paradigm. First, we believe that it is necessary to analyze how the different search platforms are used. To be able to understand and read into users behavior is a necessary step to comprehend what users understand, and to identify what they need to get an in-depth understanding of the operation of such platforms. Indeed, most systems act as black boxes which conceal the underlying transformations applied on data. Users do not need to understand in details how those algorithms work. However, because those algorithms have a major impact on the accessibility of information, and need to be taken into account during the exploitation of search results. Why is the search engine returning those particular results ? Why is this document more pertinent than another ? Such seemingly naive questions are nonetheless essential to undertake an analytical approach of the information search and retrieval task. We think that users have a right and a duty to question themselves about the relevance of such and such tool at their disposal. To help them cope with these issues, we developped a dual-use information search platform. On the one hand, it can be used to observe and understand user behavior. On the other hand, it can be used as a pedagogical medium to highlight research biases users can be exposed to. At the same time, we believe that the tools themselves must be improved. In the second part of this thesis, we study the impact that the quality of documents can have on their accessibility. Because of the increase of documents available online, human operators are less and less able to insure their quality. Thus, there is a need to set up new strategies to improve the way search platform operate and process documents. We propose a new method to automatically identify and correct errors generated by information extraction process such as OCR.

Usage patterns of a sports relatedsecond screen application : A qualitative case study during live sport games

De senaste åren har trenden att använda en second screen i samband med tv-tittande ökat till följd av den ökade användningen av smartphones och surfplattor. Det ökade second screen-användandet medför att innehållet som visas på tv får mindre uppmärksamhet av tittarna. En möjlig lösning för att motverka detta är så kallade programspecifika second screen-applikationer som syftar till att komplettera innehållet som visas på tv och ge tittaren ett mervärde. Denna rapport syftar till att identifiera användningsmönster för en programspecifik second screen-applikation som används under livesända ishockeymatcher samt vilka faktorer som påverkar mönstren. Applikationen består av ett flöde som innehåller inlägg relaterade till matchen, t.ex. kommentarer och videoklipp från sportprofiler samt frågor som tittaren kan besvara och därmed se andra tittares åsikter om olika situationer i matchen. Rapporten diskuterar även förslag på hur resultaten kan användas vid utformandet av flödesbaserade second screen-applikationer samt hanteringen av innehållet i flödet. För att identifiera användningsmönstren utfördes användarobservationer, direkt följda av kompletterade intervjuer, under fem direktsända ishockeymatcher med fem olika användare som ensamma tittade på en match. Resultaten av studien visar att användningsmönstren huvudsakligen påverkas av de olika delarna i sändningen (speltid, studioanalys och reklamavbrott) samt spänningen i matchen. De olika funktionerna i applikationen samt användandet av andra applikationer är också faktorer som påverkar användandet. Resultaten visar även att användarna värdesätter att känna samhörighet med andra som tittar på matchen när de tittar på en match ensam. / The trend of interacting with a second screen while watching TV has evolved over the past years with the increased usage of smartphones and tablets. One program genre in which second screen usage is common is sports. The increasing second screen usage has made it challenging to keep viewers engaged in the content being shown on the TV. A possible solution to this problem is program-specific second screen applications that serve to complement the TV content and give an added value to the viewer. This paper aims to identify usage patterns of a program-specific second screen application, used during broadcasts of live hockey games. The application consists of a feed that contains posts related to the game such as comments and videos posted by sport profiles and editors, and polls that the viewer can answer to see other viewers’ thoughts about different situations in the game. Moreover, the paper analyzes what factors affect the usage patterns and discusses how the findings could be used when developing and managing the content of a feed-based second screen application during a sports game. To identify the usage patterns of the application a triangulation approach was used. Five user observations, directly followed by complementing semi-structured interviews were conducted during five separate live hockey games broadcast on TV. The results show that the usage patterns of the application are mainly affected by the excitement and the different parts of the broadcast (game time, studio analysis and commercial breaks), the different features of the application and the usage of other applications. Moreover, the results highlight the importance of feeling connected to other remote viewers of the game through the application when watching a game alone.

Tool unit designed for equine dentistry

Most people have experienced toothache and know how much it effects the health. It hurts to eat, it ́s hard to sleep and sometimes a small gesture as a smile is avoided because it pains to much. Of course animals have the same issue and feel pain but they can’t tell us how they feel, instead we have to look for signs from their behavior. The recommendation to regularly check the horse’s teeth does minimize the risk of pain. The knowledge within the field of equine dentistry is on the rise and educations and regulations is developing to give the best dental care possible. This has created a need of the right tools adopted to this specific field and this is where a company like Accesia has a chance to be at the forefront of this development. Accesia is a company that have developed tools and educations about the animal dental profession since 2009. Until now the focus has been on smaller animals like cats, dogs and rodents but now they are widening their customer field and develops for this new market, equine dentistry. To get a understanding of this new customers some field studies has been performed and needs that are separate from the previous customer needs has been identified. It ́s not only the size that differs from the dentist working with cats and dogs, it ́s also the working environment and the anatomic conditions that looks completely different. For this thesis the main goal has been to identify how a unit for the tools used by equine dentists should be structured and what parts that should be included to endure the transportation and environment where it will be used. To gain this information, several interviews were conducted with the main users and the experts working on Accesia. The gathered information where later analyzed, concretized and explored in a product concept. This report will go through the different stages in the design process that led to a final design concept which were presented with a prototype and posters at a thesis fair organized by Jönköping University.

Aims The purpose of this study is to explore the possibilities for video-based learning of computer systems in the field of medical education in rural sub-Saharan Africa. Background Low-income countries are forced to perform healthcare services with resources already spread too thin. The use of electronic medical records can increase the cost-effectiveness of delivering healthcare services, but the low computer literacy in sub-Saharan Africa is an obstacle necessary to overcome. E-learning and video-based learning has the potential to partially solve this problem. Methods User observations were conducted on five healthcare workers in rural Uganda. The users watched an instruction video, after which they performed an assessment test of an electronic medical record system. Results Some effectiveness was perceived – but it was slight, and varied greatly between the test subjects. Computer experience is an important prerequisite for the success of e-learning initiatives. Effectiveness was higher for more simple tasks. Conclusion This paper does not propose video-based learning as the only source of training for the target group. However, there is a possibility to envision video-based learning as a building block in a blended-learning strategy – utilising video-based learning for easier tasks and knowledge retention for users who are already familiar with the system.
