Evaluating intellectual development of horticultural students: the impact of two teaching approaches using Perry’s scheme of intellectual development as measured by the learning environment preference

Lavis, Catherine Camille January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Agronomy / Steve J. Thien / This phenomenological study explored horticultural students’ intellectual development as defined by William Perry’s Scheme. Perry’s theory of intellectual development helps describe the progression in college student thinking from simple to complex. These patterns of development act as filters through which a student ascribes meaning to their world. The objectives of this study were to: 1) explore the reliability of using the Learning Environment Preference Inventory (LEP) instrument’s Cognitive Complexity Indicator (CCI) scores as a tool to recognize the positions of cognitive complexity of horticultural students, the nature of this complexity and if gender, age, class status, or previous horticultural experience would influence CCI scores; 2) determine if specific teaching methods designed to promote active involvement at a higher level of exchange than lecture might influence scores; 3) describe the effects of the collaborative interactions with classmates and instructor; 4) determine whether student journals would reveal changes in their cognitive complexity or perception of learning as a result of their learning environment and; 5) discover other significant issues that could produce advancement along the Perry scale. Students in this study began their experiences no lower than Perry position two and ranged as high as position four. The initial CCI scores affirmed that many upper-division horticultural students were still operating in Perry positions two and three. Analysis of the interviews revealed: 1) that instructor techniques may positively or negatively influence individual students ideal learning environment; 2) there are significant issues that influence student ideal learning environments; 3) learning is viewed as the responsibility of the instructor, and; 4) students prefer hands-on learning. The students CCI scores did not show upward movement as a direct result of collaborative learning, although the voices of several students expressed both benefits and drawbacks of this type of learning. Journal writing did not reveal any changes in students’ level of thinking or perception of learning but they did reveal other aspects of student learning and attitudes. An understanding of Perry’s Scheme helped the researcher to recognize that student perspective, behavior, and performance is conditioned more by the students’ cognitive complexity than by peer interaction or by teaching methodology.

In recent years, large numbers of Online Socializing Platform, such as community sites, instant messenger, etcare making people begin to use the Internet to expand their relationships and manage their friendship network. In the past, the literatures on the use of Internet and interpersonal interaction were rarely analyzed for the national culture and environmental background of Internet users. However, the behavior of human beings will be affected by the context and cultural values that they live on. In this premise, the main objective of this study is to examine the impact of Internet use on interpersonal interaction and to explore the differences in behavior between people from different cultural environment. The study, with literature review, has sorted out the internet using behaviors and friendship network development of the relevant literature, as well as the relevant concepts of national culture and aspect, including the relationship between cultural differences and interpersonal relationships, the relationship between national culture and internet using behaviors. The method of this study is secondary data analysis, data were collected from the survey of World Internet Project. Class-based logistic regression analysis was then proceeded to to discuss correlation between internet using behaviors and interpersonal interaction with the comparison of cultures from different countries. Overall results show that Internet use motivation can be divided into three types, including instrumental motivation, social motivation and entertaining motivation. While social motivation has significant positive correlation on interpersonal interaction, it means the use of the network and the rise of social networks provide people with more interactive platform and pipeline, and enhance the interpersonal interaction. Based on the analytical results, when the national culture belongs to the oriental culture, social motivation will have a stronger impact on interpersonal interaction under the influence of national culture. In other words, national culture as a moderator variable has different effects on internet using behaviors and interpersonal interaction.

This diploma thesis focuses on data included in social networking sites. It also evaliuates the possibilities of using such data from small and medium enterprises (SME) point of view. The first part of the thesis describes the context of social networking sites (SNS). Further it explores structures in which SNS data persist and conditions to be met when loading the data. The first part incorporates an overview of basic actions to be peformed when starting using the data. The second part of this thesis is more focused on usage of the data. It offers a detailed overview of cases of use in terms of data on SNS. The third part is subdivided into two separate sections. The first section describes results of an experiment on what data can be found based on name and email address. The second section contains a suggestion on a course of actions needed to be made to establish an SNS strategy in a SME. The course of steps is further demonstrated on a real world small enterprise. The main asset of the thesis is the overview of data available on SNS, steps to load it and it's cases of use. This allows the enterprises in SME sector to orientate themselfs in the world of SNS data and to fast integrate the data in the everyday life. Another asset of this thesis is the demonstration of what data can be found on SNS after entering name and e-mail address. This can help individuals imagine what data they are sharing without knowing it.
