A retrospective survey of post-graduate career paths of Durban Institute of Technology (DIT-formerly Technikon Natal) homoeopathic graduates from 1994 to 2004

Babaletakis, Fotini Nicoleta January 2006 (has links)
Thesis (M.Tech.: Homoeopathy)-Dept. of Homoeopathy, Durban Institute of Technology, 2006 xxiv, 251 leaves / The first formal Homoeopathic education programme in South Africa introduced Technikon Natal (now the Durban Institute of Technology – DIT). The course had its first intake in 1989 and has since produced some 10 years of graduates. The programme affords the graduate a Master’s Degree in Technology in Homoeopathy (Ross, 2006). Career paths regarding graduates of this programme have never been investigated. Such an investigation was deemed valuable to clarify areas of difficulty regarding the education provided and the profession as a whole, to ascertain the viability of Homoeopathy as a career. It also aimed to identify possible other career choices a graduate may have with the education received. The study was limited to DIT Homoeopathic graduates from 1994 to 2004. The study was designed to investigate the demographic composition of the group, as well as other aspects of their career since graduation.

Perceptions of the professionalization of dental technology

Skea, Denise Angela January 2010 (has links)
Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the Degree of Master of Technology: Dental Technology, Durban University of Technology, 2010. / This study investigates the perceptions of dentists, dental technicians and dental patients with regard to the professionalization of dental technology as it is currently constituted in South Africa. The origin of dental technology worldwide lies in a trade and has historically been performed by craftsmen under the instruction of dentists. In South Africa during the early 1900s dental technology was practised in much the same way but the need for formalization of this field had been recognised. By 1945 dental technology was regulated by the Dental Mechanicians Board, which enabled only registered technicians to practise dental technology within South Africa. This field continues to be practised similarly at present. In order to establish the professional development of dental technology it is necessary to consider this field within a framework of desired professional attributes. This framework is provided by Greenwood (1957), who defines a profession by the following five attributes: systematic theory, professional authority, community sanction, ethical codes and a professional culture. Owing to the varied implementation and regulation of dental technology worldwide, little research into the professionalization of this field has been conducted to date. For the purpose of this study, dentists, dental technicians and dental patients in KwaZulu-Natal were interviewed in semi-structured interviews. The main themes emerging from this study were identified and considered with reference to the framework within which this study has been positioned. This study concludes that dental technology, as it is currently constituted in South Africa is perceived to be a profession by dentists, dental technicians and dental patients. .The term profession, however, is poorly understood by all three sample groups. Despite being considered a profession, dental technology is not considered to encompass all the attributes of a profession. Dental technology is therefore identified as a developing profession that positions this field somewhere along the professionalization continuum between a profession and a business. / Post Graduate Dept., Durban University of Technology.

Standaardisering van die Meyer-belangstellingsvraelys op volwassenes

Rabie, Janine 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc (Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / The purpose of this investigation was to standardise the MB-10 on adults. As it has already been standardised for grade 7, grade 9 and grade 11 learners, as well as first year students, the next logical step would be to extend it to adults. This study is further motivated by a suggestion of the Psychometric Committee of the Vocational Council for Psychology that there is indeed a need to standardise the MB- 10 on adults. Altogether 233 adult volunteers between the ages of 22 and 55 years participated in this study. The average age of the male group (35 years) is more or less the same as that of the female group (34 years). The majority of the participants (184) are Afrikaans speaking. Regarding the level of education, marginally more men and women (51% and 52% respectively) have post-matric qualifications, whereas 49% of the men and 48% of the women only have a school qualification. From the investigation the following conclusions might be drawn: * The same form of the MB-10 which has already been standardised on other groups, can be used as a reliable and valid instrument of measurement for adult interest. * Item analysis has indicated that there are only a few items which did not make a positive contribution to the relevant field, but that the overwhelming majority of the item correlations are highly satisfactory. A possible reason for the low correlations may be that certain items that should have been simple enough for grade 7 learners, were too simplistic for adults. * No meaningful differences were found regarding interest between adults with different educational levels, except that persons with no post school qualifications tend to have a preference for business activities. Results of this investigation have resulted in the setting of separate norm tables for adult men and women.

Career indecision amongst prospective university students

Gordon, Liezel 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)- University of Stellenbosch, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The numerous prospective university students' who present at the Centre for Student Counselling of the University of Stellenbosch for guidance in selecting an occupation or university course, suggest that there is a high level of career indecision amongst such individuals. With the purpose of addressing career indecision, the present study examined the nature thereof amongst prospective university students. The prevalence of specific aspects of career maturity (namely, self-information, decision-making, career information, integration of self-information and career information, and career planning) underlying career indecision were investigated, as well as the correlations between these aspects. In addition, the correlations between the aspects of career maturity and certain biographical variables such as gender, home language, declared career choice, differentiation of interests, and self-reported level of career indecision were examined. Eighty-four prospective students, who presented for career counselling at the Centre for Student Counselling of the University of Stellenbosch, served as subjects in the study. The subjects completed the Career Development Questionnaire (CDQ), the Meyer Interest Questionnaire (MB-10) and a biographical questionnaire compiled by the researcher. The results of the study indicated that a substantial number of prospective university students experience career indecision. There were statistically significant correlations (p<0,01) between the 5 scales of the CDQ. In addition, there were statistically significant correlations (p<0,01) between the 5 scales of the CDQ, and self-reported level of career indecision. There were no clinically significant correlations between gender and home language, and any other variable measured. An attempt was made to address career indecision amongst the population group by making certain recommendations regarding the content and process of career counselling for prospective university students.

Timmey, Marquard Aldrin 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The lack of scientific and technically schooled human resources has been a problem in the South African labour market for quite some time. In the present study the factors influencing learners' decisions to choose Physical Science or not, as a final subject choice, are examined. The Meyer Interest Questionnaire (MB-lO) and two selfdesigned questionnaires were completed by 140 grade 10 pupils of a brown and a black high school in Stellenbosch. Pearson rank order correlations, Chi-square analysis and the Mann-Whitney test were used to analyse the data. It appears that a significant number of learners choose Physical Science if they believe that they need it for their tertiary course or if they need it for university admission or if they think that it would better their bursary and/or study loan prospects. A significant number of learners do not choose Physical Science if they did not do well in General Science in grade nine or if they believe that Physical Science is not a subject for girls. Many learners also do not choose Physical Science because of a perception that Physical Science is too difficult. Significantly few learners made use of career counselling during their [mal subject choice. Significant differences were found between the interests of the group that chose Physical Science and the group that did not choose it.

Daiber, Karl Heinrich 03 1900 (has links)
Tesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 1992. / Een kopie mikrofiche. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The lack of scientific psychometric aids for use during the critical stages of developmental phases of German-speaking Namibian pupils, necessitated this investigation. When careerrelated decisions like subject, course and career choices are made, most pupils require scientific information about themselves. Of all these sources of information, those pertaining to the measurement of interests play the most significant role in the making of career decisions. By means of the present study an attempt was made to develop an interest questionnaire for German-speaking pupils. The way in which items of Afrikaans and English interest questionnaires were formulated, as well as the vocabulary that was used in these questionnaires, resulted in uncertainties. Insufficient face validity together with irrelevant norms resulted in distorted pictures of pupils' interests with the subsequent non-optimal decisions or doubts regarding the validity of the instruments. Given the Southern African nature of the items of the KODUS-BelangstellingsvraelysjKODUS Interest Questionnaire as well as the more than satisfactory results that were achieved by the thorough research that went into the original standardisation, it was decided to translate and adapt these questionnaires for use with German speaking Namibian pupils. In translating and adapting the questionnaire various factors had to be taken into consideration ·in order to produce an instrument that would measure the same fields of interest as the original Afrikaans·· and English questionnaires. Following a pilot study, it was found that no alterations to the questionnaire would be required. The subsequent standardisation yielded results indicating that the questionnaire was translated and adapted satisfactorily and that it measures the same interest fields as the Afrikaans and English questionnaires. Separate norms had to be compiled for the various sex and standard groups. The "KODUS-Interessenfragebogen (Deutsch)" in its present form is suitable for scientific use with German-speaking pupils of Namibia. / pdv201410

RACE OF REHABILITATION CLIENTS AND PSYCHOMETRIC TEST SCORES IN THE PREDICTION OF VOCATIONAL POTENTIAL (WIDE RANGE ACHIEVEMENT TEST, GATES-MCGINITIE READING TEST, STANDARD PROGRESSIVE MATRICES (SPM)).

WILSON, LLOYD KENTON. January 1984 (has links)
This study investigated differences among racial groups and between sex groups on psychometric test performances, demographic data, and vocational potential ratings of an adult rehabilitation client sample. Also, the psychometric and demographic variables were included in discriminant function equations to predict the vocational potential ratings of the white, Hispanic, and black groups and of the total sample. The sample in this study was composed of 99 adult rehabilitation clients who completed comprehensive vocational evaluations between January, 1980, and July, 1983. Each case included complete psychometric and demographic data. Also, a vocational potential rating based on this data, other aptitude and ability testing, work sample performances, behavior observations, and other information obtained by the vocational evaluator was reported for each case. Analysis of variance procedures found no significant differences between the male group and the female group of the total sample on the psychometric and demographic variables, or on the cumulative vocational potential rating. Significant differences were found among the racial groups on mean performance of reading comprehension and arithmetic computation, and on years of education attained. Tukey HSD procedures specified that these differences exist between the white group and the Hispanic group on reading comprehension, between the white group and the black group on arithmetic computation, and between the white and black groups and the hispanic group on years of educaton attained. Also, no significant differences were demonstrated among the racial groups on general mental ability, age, or cumulative vocational potential ratings. Discriminant function analysis procedures applied the psychometric and demographic variables to the prediction of vocational potential ratings of the racial groups and of the total sample. Observation of the resulting prediction equations indicated that some external bias may exist in the use of these equations for predicting vocational potential in white, Hispanic, and black groups. Also, no single predictor variable was the primarily selected variable in all of the discriminant function equations of vocational potential ratings in the total sample. Overall, the predictive power of the discriminant function equations was not sufficient to recommend their use in clinical practice.
