Career Counseling with Academically Talented Students

Rowe, Kirk (Kirk Lee) 08 1900 (has links)
Academically talented college students have unique development needs that often go unmet. One area that is currently attracting more attention in the academically talented literature is career counseling. The purpose of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of individual and group career counseling interventions. Subjects included 54 students from a special Texas program that provides the opportunity for gifted students to attend college during their final two years of high school. One instrument used assessed identity, confidence, career goals, and professional identity. The second instrument evaluated whether the subjects had recently discussed career concerns, were seeing a vocational counselor, or seeking career information. A pre-test was followed by group or individual intervention, and a post-test was conducted two months later. Results indicated an overall decrease on the instrument assessing professional identity and career goals. This study revealed no difference in effectiveness between group or individual interventions. Further research in this area is necessary to develop and refine the most effective career counseling interventions for the academically talented student.

A Proposed Guidance Program for Electra High School

Cox, Ethel Hixson 08 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study is to develop a functional plan for organizing, initiating, and administering a sound guidance program in the Electra, Texas, High School. Major emphasis has been placed upon a multidimensional guidance service in order that the optimum measure of guidance can be provided for all pupils in accordance with their needs. In order to plan a guidance program adapted to the needs of the particularly designated group of boys and girls, it was deemed necessary to discover their needs as much as possible, in a short period of time, by testing student opinion and knowledge. Another specific problem of the study is to survey the opinions of authorities in the field of guidance and personnel so as to determine what they think constitutes a sound guidance program in a secondary school. Thus, the problem of the writer resolves itself into a threefold undertaking, as follows: 1. To determine the guidance needs of the pupils of Electra High School. 2. To establish a set of criteria of soundness for a guidance program in a secondary school. The criteria are to be based upon the opinions of several authorities in the field of guidance. 3. To set up a proposed guidance program for Electra High School.

Sobre o conceito de políticas públicas e suas consequências para a orientação profissional / About the concept of Public Policies and its consequences to the Vocational Guidance

Gatti, Marcos 16 September 2011 (has links)
Frente a esta realidade, consideramos que alternativa viável dispomos e o que poderíamos fazer para coloca-la em prática e mudar os rumos em que a atual forma de se entender política tem nos direcionado / Aware of the speed in which the changes in the structure of the distinct social economic contexts of the last decades have happened, we noticed that most of the tenets in which our society is based upon are crumbling. Particularly, Rousseauss social contract, that is the base for the understanding of the modern society and stands as the philosophical reference to the elaboration of policies concerning the welfare of the people, which has its tenets ignored while a different logic, based upon oppression and exclusion takes place instead of common welfare promotion. The Social Psychology and the Vocational Guidance specifically, are also victims of this transformation since their knowledge is target of an attempt of instrumentalization of their tools in the service of the market and the capital logic, opposing their historic tradition of concern with the common welfare. Facing this reality, we consider which viable option we have and what could we do to put it in motion, changing the way which policy has taken us presently
