Loopbaanfasilitering in die veranderende werkskonteks : 'n opvoedkundig-sielkundige benadering

Prinsloo, Thersia 21 August 2012 (has links)
M.Ed. / The society we live in is ever-changing. The youth have to orientate and direct themselves in the face of these changes. It appears that schools and school career counselling do not adequately equip the learner for the transition from school to the work environment. This and the shortage of opportunities cause feelings of uncertainty and hopelessness about the future. The educational psychologist career counsellor, with the task of guiding learners in making career choices, is also influenced by the changes in society and the work environment. This study is an exploration of the changing world of work in order to define the demands made on the educational psychologist career counsellor. The information explosion and the consequent development of information technology, globalisation and the liberalisation of society, cause significant changes in the world of work. The industrial world of work is now characterised by several changes, additions and adjustments. The move towards a changing world of work implies that workers have to change their conception that organisations ensure security and long-term positions. Work is no longer perceived as permanent and standardised. The world of work can't be seen as stable, constant and predictable any more. It should rather be viewed as entrepreneurial, competitive, urgent, fragmented, diverse, unpredictable and short-term-directed. Even the concepts work and career have undergone a change in meaning. The changing conception of work demands more from workers than that of the industrial conception. It becomes increasingly difficult for workers to establish an individual identity. The workers' self-worth can no longer be measured according to a specific job or a specific position within the hierarchy of an organisation. The demands on the workers' personal, interpersonal and career management skills are also increasing. These demands require that workers be directed towards life-long learning and training. A critical evaluation of the exclusive use of the trait-factor approach to career counselling in the changing world of work proves that it is no longer deemed an adequate approach for the responsible career counsellor. This requires that educational psychologists have to make changes in their approach to career counselling. Guidelines for the move from vocational guidance towards a facilitative career counselling approach are presented. This implies a move from an industrial conception of work towards a changed conception of work; from objectivity towards perspectivity; from experts towards co-workers; from work identity towards a more complex identity; from fitting towards empowerment and from individual interventions towards group interventions. The task of the educational psychologist career counsellor thus becomes more comprehensive and demanding.

Use of the Reve Eveille Dirige (Guided Daydream) for Selection of Vocation and College Major

Patrick, Jerry Heard, 1933- 01 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the guided daydream technique as a method for selection of a vocation and major area of study by college students seeking vocational counseling. Choices made by each student were rated by three judges relative to their degree of correspondence with the results of a specific battery of vocational tests which that student had taken. The ratings of these students' choices were compared with similar ratings made by the same judges on a control group of students who had also made choices of vocation and college major but had not participated in the guided daydream session.

Tyrimo metodologija: Tyrimo metodologijos pagrindą sudaro humanistinė asmenybės teorija (C. Rogers 1983; A. Maslow 1970)... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Relevance of the study: student development professional activities - an important task, the share of general education schools. Non-ability correlates of the science-math trait complex: searching for personality characteristics and revisiting vocational interests

Toker, Yonca 09 November 2010 (has links)
The trait complex approach (Ackerman&Heggestad, 1997) makes it possible to study the individual holistically by taking account of various individual differences at the same time, such as abilities, personality, motivation, and vocational preferences. Recently, Kanfer, Wolf, Kantrowitz, and Ackerman (2010) provided support for taking a whole-person approach in predicting academic performance. They also showed the incremental role of non-ability predictors over the role of ability predictors. Objectives of the present study were to further explore the non-ability variables of the science/math trait complex. Identifying the personality correlates of the science/math trait complex was the first objective. Investigation results yielded four personality factors as correlates of the complex, which play important roles for engineers and scientists at different stages of the vocational track: toughmindedness was the personality marker of the science/math trait complex and was associated with intending to pursue a STEM career; achievement and control were associated with academic success in STEM majors; and cognitively-oriented behavior was associated with more cognitively challenging pursuits, such as attending STEM competitions and planning to go on to graduate school. The second purpose was to revisit the vocational interests associated with the science/math trait complex and the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) groups. A new measure was introduced, referred to as STEM Interest Complexity, which measures interests towards engaging in increasingly complex tasks in the Numerical, Symbolic, Spatial, and STEM-related Ideas domains. It was developed to assess the level of vocational interests, in addition to the traditionally assessed direction of vocational interests (Holland, 1985). Validation of the new STEM Interest Complexity measure showed adequate construct and concurrent criterion-related validities. Construct validity was established by demonstrating associations between the new measure and measures of the direction of interests, cognitive abilities, intelligence as personality, and learning goal orientations. Support for the new measure's criterion-related validity was found by demonstrating that the measure discriminates between majors, and predicts vocational criteria (i.e., college achievement in STEM, attachment to STEM fields, major satisfaction, and one's intentions to chose a complex STEM career). With dominance analyses, it was shown that STEM Interest Complexity was the most important vocational assessment in the prediction of criteria. Results support the assertion that vocational interest inventories can be improved by incorporating the level of complexity dimension. Finally, a science/math trait complex composite score, including the personality factors and STEM Interest Complexity, in addition to the previously determined ability, interest, and self-concept associates, showed moderate associations with STEM-related vocational criteria. The non-ability individual differences, which were the focus of the present study, added to the conceptualization and predictive utility of the science/math trait complex.

The Effects of a Group Vocational Counseling Method on Selected Variables Among Community College Students

Melkus, Roger A. 12 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a group vocational counseling method among community college students. The purposes of this study are to present an application of developmental counseling to group vocational counseling with community college students, and to determine whether this vocational counseling program will have an effect upon certain selected variables. Self-concept congruence was measured by a semantic differential, the Personal Concept Scale; and vocational maturity was measured by the Attitude Scale of the Vocational Development Inventory. Anxiety associated with the concepts "myself," "other people," "choosing a career," and "five years from now" was assessed by the Concept-Specific Anxiety Scale. Certainty and satisfaction with vocational plans were assessed by eleven-point rating scales included on the Vocational Status Sheet, an instrument designed specifically for the present study. Included on this same instrument was a check list designed to measure vocational information gathering activity.
