Value-mapping for major economic infrastructure projects

Kraatz, Judy Ann January 2009 (has links)
The establishment of corporate objectives regarding economic, environmental, social, and ethical responsibilities, to inform business practice, has been gaining credibility in the business sector since the early 1990’s. This is witnessed through (i) the formation of international forums for sustainable and accountable development, (ii) the emergence of standards, systems, and frameworks to provide common ground for regulatory and corporate dialogue, and (iii) the significant quantum of relevant popular and academic literature in a diverse range of disciplines. How then has this move towards greater corporate responsibility become evident in the provision of major urban infrastructure projects? The gap identified, in both academic literature and industry practice, is a structured and auditable link between corporate intent and project outcomes. Limited literature has been discovered which makes a link between corporate responsibility; project performance indicators (or critical success factors) and major infrastructure provision. This search revealed that a comprehensive mapping framework, from an organisation’s corporate objectives through to intended, anticipated and actual outcomes and impacts has not yet been developed for the delivery of such projects. The research problem thus explored is ‘the need to better identify, map and account for the outcomes, impacts and risks associated with economic, environmental, social and ethical outcomes and impacts which arise from major economic infrastructure projects, both now, and into the future’. The methodology being used to undertake this research is based on Checkland’s soft system methodology, engaging in action research on three collaborative case studies. A key outcome of this research is a value-mapping framework applicable to Australian public sector agencies. This is a decision-making methodology which will enable project teams responsible for delivering major projects, to better identify and align project objectives and impacts with stated corporate objectives.

New waste management era through collaborative business models & sustainable innovation

Chizayfard, Armaghan, Samie, Yasaman January 2016 (has links)
Background: Swedish textile waste management ecosystem is recognized to be a multi-actor ecosystem as opposed to a single-actor scenario whereas actors tend to perform their activities single-handedly and in a fragmented manner. Participating actors, each play a significant role in handling and treating the textile waste but this fragmented system renders certain drawbacks. The main treatment of textile waste in Sweden is incineration which addresses environmental damages. This in particular is more worrying when textiles are used as a fuel. This highlights the necessity for the actors to perform in a network and expand their collaboration, thus move more efficiently towards development of a sustainable innovation and find an alternative for the current treatment of textile waste. Purpose: This study strives to investigate the challenges and at the same time opportunities of implementation of a collaborative business model for sustainable innovation. This has been achieved through taking benefits of value mapping tool and actor-mapping. The core values of actors have been identified which was continued by identification of their shared and conflicting values. Methodology: Pre-study was conducted in order to design and develop two mappings, “main actors mapping”, “actor’s activity mapping” which helped the authors and the interviewees to gain a better realization of the Swedish Textile Waste Management ecosystem through visualization. The process of data collection occurred through semi-structured interviews with Open-ended questions which resulted to rich detailed responses from the interviewees. Seven organizations as the representative of Swedish textile waste management ecosystem were reached and studied. The outcomes of the interview were analyzed by the aid of value mapping tool and led the authors to formulate the answer to the research question. Interview findings: Interview findings presents the outcome of the collected data in accordance with the purpose of the study and the answer to the proposed research question. Consequently, this chapter provides a description of the Activity classification in TWM eco-system in Sweden as an outcome of the pre-study, continued by expanding on the results of Actors mapping & their activities in TW eco-system and Activity mapping in relation to actors’ interactions, which were achieved by the aid of value mapping tool. This chapter is concluded by providing actors perspectives regarding the formation and the suitability of a collaborative business model for sustainable innovation on the basis of mapped values within textile waste scenario in Sweden. Analysis& Discussion: This study tends to present rich and comprehensive picture in a descriptive manner in regards with participating actors, their activities, collaboration and value-orientations within Swedish textile waste scenario and propose a solution to the identified short-comings of the system by investigating the potentials of a collaborative business model for sustainable innovation. The literature review confirm and support the interview findings and addresses the need for further dialogue and collaboration among actors while highlighting the need from moving from ego-centric business model to multi-actor business model. This chapter is concluded by the response to the research question.

Model primene lin sistema u maloprodaji trajnih potrošnih dobara / Lean system application model in durable goods retail

Grabež Sanja 28 September 2016 (has links)

neizvesnija, a asortiman širok. Veoma važan faktor koji je deo ovog
modela jeste uticaj povećanja znanja zaposlenih o lin alatima i
kulturi u samoj organizaciji.
/
The subject of this disertation is how to define model of lean system
application in durable goods retail with the focus on optimisation of primary
activities i.e. product flow from suppliers till customers. The basic idea is to
define model of lean application in the processes of the products with stable
and predictable demand that are offered from shop stock, till the products
with the oposite logic that are sold from samples and catalogues, without
stock in retail, and where demand is highly unpredictable and assortment
wide and variable. Very important factor which is part of this model is how to
increase knowledge and acceptance of lean tools and culture within the
organisation.

Value as a Motivating Factor for Collaboration : The case of a collaborative network for wind asset owners for potential big data sharing

Kenjangada Kariappa, Ganapathy, Bjersér, Marcus January 2019 (has links)
The world's need for energy is increasing while we realize the consequences of existing unsustainable methods for energy production. Wind power is a potential partial solution, but it is a relatively new source of energy. Advances in technology and innovation can be one solution, but the wind energy industry is embracing them too slow due to, among other reasons, lack of incentives in terms of the added value provided. Collaboration and big data may possibly provide a key to overcome this. However, to our knowledge, this research area has received little attention, especially in the context of the wind energy industry. The purpose of this study is to explore value as a motivating factor for potential big data collaboration via a collaborative network. This will be explored within the context of big data collaboration, and the collaborative network for wind asset owners O2O WIND International. A cross sectional, multi-method qualitative single in-depth case study is conducted. The data collected and analyzed is based on four semi-structured interviews and a set of rich documentary secondary data on the 25 of the participants in the collaborative network in the form of 3866 pages and 124 web pages visited. The main findings are as follows. The 25 participants of the collaborative network were evaluated and their approach to three different types of value were visualized through a novel model: A three-dimensional value approach space. From this visualization clusters of participants resulting in 6 different approaches to value can be distinguished amongst the 25 participants. Furthermore, 14 different categories of value as the participants express are possible to create through the collaborative network has been identified. These values have been categorized based on fundamental types of value, their dimensions and four value processes. As well as analyzed for patterns and similarities amongst them. The classification results in a unique categorization of participants of a collaborative network. These categories prove as customer segments that the focal firm of the collaborative network can target. The interviews resulted in insights about the current state of the industry, existing and future market problems and needs as well as existing and future market opportunities. Then possible business model implications originating from our findings, for the focal firm behind the collaborative network O2O WIND International as well as the participants of the collaboration, has been discussed. We conclude that big data and collaborative networks has potential for value creation in the wind power sector, if the business model of those involved takes it into account. However, more future research is necessary, and suggestions are made.

Public Values, Science Values, and Decision Making in Climate Science Policy

January 2010 (has links)
abstract: Investments in climate science come with an expectation of social benefit. Science policy--decision processes through which individuals and organizations support, manage, and evaluate research--plays an important role in determining those outcomes. Yet the details of how climate science policy actually works have received very little attention amid academic and policy-focused discussions of climate science. This dissertation examines climate science policy with particular attention to how it supports "public values" that justify research investments. It is widely recognized funding for climate science in the US has advanced knowledge considerably in recent decades but failed to produce useful information for decision makers. In Chapter 2, I use a methodological approach known as Public Value Mapping (PVM) to investigate this failure of the science policy system. My results show that science funding institutions have been ineffective at guiding climate science toward desired outcomes because of problematic, but common assumptions about the links between science and societal benefit. The remaining chapters look more closely at the implications of these tacit assumptions, which are held by individuals, and embedded in the organizations that implement climate science policy. Chapter 3 examines the notion that prediction is essential to climate science. Wide acceptance of the "prediction imperative" limits the scope of climate science policy. Chapter 4 examines the interplay of values and assumptions in two recently established organizations in Australia, each supporting research on climate change adaptation. In Chapter 5 I document a widespread assumption in the climate science literature that agreement among multiple models should bolster confidence in their results. This can only be correct if the models are independent of one another. Climate scientists have not demonstrated this to be true, nor have they offered a plausible framework for doing so. This dissertation adds an important dimension to our understanding of how climate science knowledge is produced, while offering constructive and practical recommendations to science policy decision makers working in government programs that fund climate science. Insight from these chapters suggests that an explicit and reflexive focus on values in science policy can be helpful to organizations pursuing science policy innovation. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Science and Technology Policy 2010

Construção predial lean: mapeamento da cadeia de valor das estruturas metálicas / Construction land lean: mapping the value chain of metallic structures

Rodrigo Rodrigues Lyra da Silva 25 September 2005 (has links)
The aim of this work is to apply the Lean Construction plan, based on Toyota Production System, as the main strategy for the steel structure assembly in a commercial building. The Lean System target is to increase the productivity in the construction process by considering the synchronism between the logistic activities and the steel structural erection. This synchronism can be obtained by following the Lean Logic of reducing the time delay, the elimination of inventory in the building site and the organization of simultaneous teams for the assemblage of the steel parts. The material flow and the sequence of activities are represented in a value stream map, in order to identify the time wasted during the process and trying to otimize sequence of operation. At the end, by analyzing a particular project of a building at the center of Rio de Janeiro, the critical problems involved in a steel construction were identified and some alternative solutions for these problems, based on Lean System, are proposed.
