The Role of Illusion in the Making of the Versailles Treaty (1919)

Baker, Bonnie Riddle 05 1900 (has links)
This investigation is concerned with the role played by the illusions of security, Bolshevism, and American innocence in the making of the Versailles Treaty of 1919. The main sources used in this thesis were the U.S. State Department publications The World War and The Paris Peace Conference and Paul Mantoux's Proceedings of the Council of Four. The drafting of the Versailles Treaty is approached chronologically with special emphasis accorded the problems emanating from the questions of Russia and the Rhine. The study concludes that the peacemakers were manipulated by the illusions of security, Bolshevism, and American innocence.

Grimald, Patrice 10 October 2013 (has links) (PDF)

Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer (Lille 1636 – Londres 1699) : peindre des fleurs et des fruits à l’âge classique / Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer (Lille 1636 - London 1699) : painting flowers and fruits during the Classical Age

Salvi, Claudia 02 December 2016 (has links)
Having compiled the entire work catalogue of Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer (easel paintings and decorations), this thesis aims to study and re-value his importance in France during the Grand Siècle.Through the study of works of his collaborators and contemporaries the uniqueness of his artistic personality is specified, as well as his position in the development of still life painting in France during the 17th century.Born in Lille, Monnoyer came early to Paris, where he joins his knowledge of Nordic still life painting to the influence of French « silent life » painters. His name is famous too during the century of Louis XIV as a painter decorator. As such, he made the first decorations for the youth residences of the monarch (Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Vincennes, the Tuileries). He there develops the importance of the pattern of the garland glorifying the prince. As a collaborator of Le Brun, he works in private worksites (Hôtel Lambert, château de Vaux), or in castles of ministers (Sceaux). He also works in England at the end of the century. Due to the great amount of royal orders, he was forced to gather assistants. The artistic issues of this production are analysed: the situation of the still life genre in the official doctrine of the Academy, and his recognition in private collections ; the position of the still life painter in the classical generation, from Felibien to Perrault. And then, the fondamental part of Monnoyer in the development and the rayonnment of this genre is studied.

La France face à l’élection et à la reconnaissance du roi Stanislas-Auguste (1763-1766) / France towards the election and the acknowledgement of King Stanislaus-Augustus (1763-1766)

Bajer, Jakub 30 November 2015 (has links)
The main goal of the dissertation was to present a complex diplomatic negotiations between France and other courts of South (Austria, Spain and Saxony) the day after death of Augustus III (5 X 1763), and the late acknowledgement (juin 1766) of his successor Stanislaus-Augustus, from the polish noble family of Poniatowski (elected the 7th of september 1764 as a russian candidate).

Community structure and composition changes of two old-growth forests at Versailles State Park in southeastern Indiana

Behforouz, Kavon Benjamin 04 May 2013 (has links)
In the 1950’s and 1960’s, studies of two old-growth forest stands in Versailles State Park, Laughery Bluff and Dogwood Nature Preserves, were designed and carried out by Potzger to provide the baseline necessary to investigate future trends in these forest communities. In 1968 and 1988, Jackson surveyed these stands again and identified changes in attributes and size classes over that 20-year period. In 2011 and 2012, these sites were re-sampled to document change in species composition and stand structure since 1968. Diameter at breast height (dbh) and species identification were recorded for all stems with dbh ≥ 10 cm. Trees between 1 and 9.9 cm dbh were sampled by counting the number of individuals by species. These data were used to calculate density, dominance, and importance values, as well as to provide full-census data on the overstory size classes at the two sites. Notable findings since the prior studies included the continued increase of Acer saccharum in density and basal area as well as the continued loss of Cornus florida and Fagus grandifolia stems throughout both stands. / Department of Biology

Allez, Marchez Braves Citoyennes: A Study of the Popular Origins of, and the Politcal and Judicial Reactions to, the October Days of the French Revolution

Jarvis, Katie L. January 2007 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Paul G. Spagnoli / On October 5, 1789, several hundred women first converged on the Parisian municipal government, then marched undeterred on Versailles to demand the king's aid in relieving the dire bread shortage in the city. By the end of the next day however, the women returned triumphantly to the capital not only with bread, but with the entire royal family, the National Guard, and National Assembly's promise to relocate to Paris as well. This revolutionary journée is referred to as the October Days, and this thesis seeks to address its spontaneous and premeditated origins. I argue that although the journée was not the result of an overarching conspiracy, its themes and actions had precursors in the early months of the Revolution and the years before. Also, by undertaking a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the ensuing judicial investigation of the movement, I have attempted to provide a grounding for the October Day's most important primary source through which some of the journée's most controversial aspects can be examined. Finally, I argue that this judicial inquiry significantly contributed to the polarization of the National Assembly as le peuple forced the political elites to take sides over the investigation. Thus, between October 5, 1789 and October 1, 1790 le peuple continued its struggle to reinforce the sovereignty with which it had been endowed. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2007. / Submitted to: Boston College. Vývoj britských konceptů teritoriálního uspořádání prostoru Československa mezi léty 1918-1938 / Evolution of British concepts of the territorial organization of the area of Czechoslovakia between the years 1918-1938

Malaniuk, Bohdan January 2016 (has links)
This Master thesis, Evolution of British concepts of the territorial organization of the area of Czechoslovakia between the years 1918-1938, examines the attitude of the British foreign policy towards the territorial concept of Czechoslovakia in the interwar period. This thesis is a historiographical narrative study based primarily on the analysis of documents on British foreign policy from the period 1918-1938. The goal of this thesis is to evaluate how the British foreign policy makers reflected the existence of the new state formation in Central Europe and how their ideas about the suitability of such political organization in the area of Czechoslovakia was changing during the interwar period. The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first covers the period after the First World War, when the borders of Czechoslovakia were decided and focuses on the British role in this process. The second chapter is dedicated to British reflections on the new state in the context of the new territorial organization of Central Europe during the twenties and early thirties. The third chapter deals with the changes in British policy towards Czechoslovakia in the context of the new geopolitical reality in Central Europe after the rise of Nazism in Germany. It tries to analyse the British standpoint on the...
