Experimental Measurements of Vestibular Hair Bundle Stiffness in the Red Ear Slider Turtle Utricle

Silverman, Jennifer Mary 16 August 2002 (has links)
The ear is the organ used for hearing and maintaining equilibrium. In the inner ear, the vestibular system is responsible for the sense of balance. The main organs of the vestibular system are the semicircular canals, the saccule, and the utricle. Within each of the vestibular organs, sensory receptors in the form of hair cells detect motion and send a message to the brain for interpretation. Hair cells found in different parts of the inner ear are structurally different and are mechanically specialized to perform different functions. In this study, the linear and torsional stiffnesses were measured for hair cells located in the red ear slider turtle utricle. The system used to measure the stiffnesses was composed of a glass whisker (attached to a pipette) used to produce a force on the tip of the bundle, an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) to measure the displacement of the pipette, and a photoelectronic motion transducer (PMT) to measure the displacement of the bundle. Using the measured values of whisker stiffness, whisker displacement, and bundle displacement, the stiffness of the bundle was calculated using statics. For each bundle tested, the location of the bundle was determined by measuring its position from a landmark in the utricle, the line of polarity reversal, characterized by a 180o change in direction of the hair bundles. Stiffness results showed that the linear stiffness of a bundle increased in the area surrounding the line of polarity reversal, otherwise referred to as the striolar region (average linear stiffness of 2.27 E-04 N/m). The average linear stiffness value of bundles found lateral to the striolar region was 6.30 E-05 N/m and in the region medial to the striolar region was 1.16 E-04 N/m. A wide range of linear stiffnesses were found in hair cells medial to the striolar region. There was no correlation found between the torsional stiffness of a bundle and its position and the height of a bundle and its linear or torsional stiffness. As the force applied to a hair bundle was increased, the measured linear stiffness of the bundle also increased. / Master of Science

The Influence of Enhanced Tactile and Vestibular Sensory Stimulation on Subsequent Auditory and Visual Responsiveness: A Matter of Timing

Honeycutt, Hunter Gibson 15 July 2002 (has links)
The fact that sensory modalities do not become functional at the same time raises the question of how sensory systems and their particular experiential histories might influence one another. Few studies have addressed how modified stimulation to earlier-emerging modalities might influence the functioning of relatively later-developing modalities. Previous findings have shown that enhanced prenatal tactile and vestibular (proximal) stimulation extended and delayed normal patterns of auditory and visual responsiveness to species-typical maternal cues in bobwhite quail respectively. Although these results were attributed to the increased amount of sensory stimulation, these results may be a function of when prenatal augmented proximal exposure took place. To address this issue the present study exposed groups of bobwhite quail embryos to equivalent amounts of augmented tactile and vestibular stimulation either at a time when a later-emerging modality (auditory or visual) was beginning to functionally emerge or when it had already functionally emerged. Results indicate that differences in the timing of augmented tactile and vestibular stimulation led to differences in subsequent auditory and visual responsiveness. Embryos were unable to learn a maternal call prior to hatching when enhanced proximal stimulation coincided with auditory functional emergence implicating a deficit in auditory functioning, but did learn a maternal call when enhanced proximal stimulation occurred after auditory functional emergence. Augmented proximal stimulation that coincided with visual functional emergence did not appear to influence normal visual responsiveness, but when proximal stimulation occurred after visual emergence, chicks displayed an accelerated approach response to species-typical visual cues. These findings support the view that the timing of enhanced stimulation to earlier-emerging modalities is important, and have meaningful implications for intersensory theory and research. / Ph. D.

The Implementation of a Photoelectronic Motion Transducer for Measuring the Sub-Micrometer Displacements of Vestibular Bundles

Merkle, Andrew Charles 25 May 2000 (has links)
The vestibular system is one of our main organs responsible for the sense of balance. This system is located within the inner ear and contains cells with ciliary bundles. These hair cells are transducers that convert a mechanical movement, detected by the bundle of cilia extending from their top surface, into an electrochemical signal to be sent to the brain. The bundles vary structurally within the organs of the inner ear, and this structural difference may play a role in the mechanical properties of each bundle. Analyzing the mechanical properties of the cells will provide information necessary for understanding the transduction process. In an effort to evaluate one of these properties, cell bundle stiffness, a system was designed to mechanically stimulate the bundles within their physiological range and then measure the resulting displacement. The mechanical stimulation was the result of a force applied to the tip of a bundle with the end of a glass whisker. The distance the base of the whisker moves is measured by an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI). The magnitude of this movement is compared with the amount the bundle is deflected, detected by a photoelectronic motion transducer (PMT). Knowing these displacements and the stiffness of the glass whisker, simple kinematics is used to determine the bundle stiffness. System tests were conducted on imitation bundles (whiskers of known stiffness) and the experimental stiffness differed from the known value by less than 4.5% for every test. These results lead us to conclude the system was in good working order and could be used to conduct tests on cell bundles. For tissue tests, this work focused on the hair cells located within the utricle, which senses linear accelerations of the head. Within the utricle, we examined two types of hair cells: non-striolar (medial type II) and striolar. Tests on twelve medial type II cells found bundles ranging in stiffness from 0.26 to 2.62 x 10⁻⁵ N/m. Results with striolar bundles provided a range from 2.83 to 27.10 x 10⁻⁵ N/m. The results of the preliminary tissue tests lead us to conclude that the average stiffness of the striolar and non-striolar bundles seems to vary by an order of magnitude. This is consistent with the relative relationship produced through a computer model. However, the model predicted larger stiffness values for both types of cells. / Master of Science

Účinnost stimulace vestibulárního systému u pacientů s poruchou stability / Effectivness of vestibular stimulation in patients with postural stability disorder

Ševčíková, Lucie January 2016 (has links)
The diploma thesis summarizes physiology of vestibular system and disorders of vestibular system. In experimental part we observe the influence of vestibular stimulation on static postural stability. We achieve vestibular stimulation by active and repeated head and body movements. We measure the lenght of COP trajectory using stabilometry. We tested two groups of persons, 20 healthy persons aged 21 - 49 years and 6 patients with postural stability disorder from vestibular origin aged 40 - 76 years. The changes in lenght of trajectory COP after vestibular stimulation were not statistically significant in any group, but for each patient, there was a change in lenght of trajectory of COP. In patients, who have peripheral vestibular disorder, there was a reduction in lenght of trajectory of COP. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

[en] THE EFFECT OF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION IN UNIVERSITY ADMISSION: ON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PROFICIENCY / [pt] COTAS NO PROCESSO DE ADMISSÃO DE UNIVERSIDADES: EFEITOS SOBRE A PROFICIÊNCIA DE ALUNOS DO ENSINO MÉDIO

BRUNO FERMAN 21 August 2006 (has links)
[en] Economic theory suggests that affirmative action can either reduce or enhance incentives to human capital accumulation. Empirical evidence on this matter, however, is still lacking. Using difference in difference estimates, this paper evaluates the effects of the quota system in the admission to Brazilian public universities on the proficiency of senior high school students. The results show evidence that favored groups attained lower scores, corroborating the existence of a negative link between affirmative action and incentives for effort and skill acquisition.

Variabilidade da atividades cerebral em resposta a estímulos vestibular e ocolomotor avaliada por fMRI / Variability of cerebral activity in response to vestibular and oculomotor stimuli evaluated by fMRI

Justina, Hellen Mathei Della 20 May 2005 (has links)
Assessing inter-variability of functional activations is of practical importance in the use of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in clinical context. The main objective of this study is to analyze the variability of cerebral activation of the vestibular and oculomotor systems through an optokinetic horizontal, a pursuit and saccadic eye movement stimulations by means of fMRI. For this, images of magnetic resonance were acquired of twenty and three asymptomatic volunteers (thirteen for the optokinetic study and ten for the pursuit and saccade stimulations) in scanner of 1.5 T Siemens (Magneton Vision) with EPI-BOLD fMRI sequences. The statistical maps were analyzed in Brain Voyager software, using the method General Linear Model. We find significant activation in primary visual cortex, in middle and inferior occipital gyrus, in middle, superior and inferior temporal gyrus, in postcentral and precentral gyrus, in middle, inferior and superior frontal gyrus, in supramarginal gyrus, in superior and inferior parietal lobule, in insula and in anterior and posterior cingulate gyrus. Groups of activity had been also found in subcorticals structures (putamen, globus pallidus, corpus callosum and thalamus), beyond the cerebellum. The analysis of the activation frequency displays a high variability between volunteers. However, the most frequently activation regions were localized in areas frontals and in regions comprehending the middle and medial superior temporal gyrus. We use two methods for the analysis of the laterality index, the first admits a fixed statistical value and the second takes in consideration the dependence of the statistical threshold within the activated number of pixels, the second method revealed more reliability. The indices had shown a right hemisphere dominance for the optokinetic study but, for the pursuit and saccade stimulations, we do not verify this dominance. Our study allowed the characterization of the most frequently involved foci in tasks of optokinetic and pursuit and saccade eye movement stimulations. The combination of these tasks constitutes a suitable tool for determine the lateralization of these functions and for mapping major areas involved in the oculomotor and vestibular systems.

Caracterização fenotípica e análise do sistema nervoso central dos camundongos mutantes equilíbrio e mergulhador induzidos pelo agente mutagênico n-ethyl-n-nitrosourea / Phenotypical characterization and central nervous system analysis of mutants equilíbrio and mergulhador induced by mutagenic agent n-ethyl-n-nitrosourea

Manes, Marianna 08 December 2017 (has links)
The mutagenic agent N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU) is widely used to produce new mutations in mice, giving origin to the equilíbrio (eqlb) which has a mutation in the NADPH oxidase 3 (Nox3) gene, chromosome 17 and mergulhador (mlh) in the gene Otopetrin 1 (Otop1), chromosome 5; both mutant strain showed vestibular impairment. Due to the similarity of the vestibular apparatus between human and mouse, the behavioral analysis of the mutant can be a valuable contribution to identify alterations involved in the control of balance and movement. This study aimed to characterize the behavior of eqlb and mlh mutant mice using the following behavioral tests: evaluation of the general activity by direct observation in the open field, motor coordination in the balance beam, elevated plus maze to evaluate the behavior of the anxious type, T-maze and recognition of objects to evaluate memory. In addition, tail suspension test was used to verify depressive like behavior. The results showed that in relation to the BALB/c mice, the mutants eqlb and mlh showed reduction of auricular reflex, surface-righting reflex, touch response, locomotion and rearing frequency. The reduction of the auricular reflex and the touch response pointed to the impairment of the psychomotor system, and the reduction of the surface-righting reflex showed a possible impairment of the psychomotor system. The reduction in the rearing frequency was, probably, a consequence of the motor impairment observed in the mutant strains. The results of the elevated plus maze test indicated that the mutants eqlb and mlh showed motor impairment mainly related to motor coordination. The increased immobility time in the tail suspension test and the inability to swim in eqlb and mlh mice reinforced the role of the vestibular system in maintaining the perception of gravity, movement, and balance.

Gaudencio, Jéssica da Silva 08 July 2015 (has links)
This research presents a multifaceted analysis for the classification of visual representations present in chemical questions of entrance examinations of five biggest São Paulo public universities: USP, UNICAMP, UFSCAR, UNESP and UNIFESP from 2007 to 2011. Entrance examinations of UFSCAR and UNIFESP used the exam ENEM from 2009 as a selection process, so the test was analyzed too. 252 questions were found with visual representations in general knowledge and specific knowledge test. Some examples of these representations include graphics, flow charts, diagrams, tables, and chemical equations. The visual representations were analyzed for their relation with the text, its functionality, chemical content involved in the question and the required cognitive skills. The results indicate, generally, that the most frequent visual representations are the chemical equations and the two-dimensional representations of molecular structure with content predominance of organic chemistry and physicochemical. About the relation of text-image, there is a high occurrence of cases in which text and image integration is necessary for the resolution of the matter. Regarding the functionality of visual representations, it is noted that: i - the test involve in his questions, illustrations that requires chemical knowledge for their interpretations; ii - there is predominance of less realistic and more interpretive images; iii - the high occurrence of nominative verbal labels. The emphasis on memorization questions containing visual representations was also investigated adopting the Zoller (1993, 1997, 1999, 2001) reference to classify the questions about the cognitive skills required: high or low order. The results indicate that questions that require lower order cognitive skills are prevalent in the tests of general knowledge, and questions that require higher order cognitive skills of specific evidence.

Reabilitação vestibular da vertigem postural paroxística benigna de canal posterior em idosos / Vestibular rehabilitation of benign posterior canal postural vertigo in the aged

André, Ana Paula do Rego 15 December 2003 (has links)
Vestibular rehabilitation is a treatment?s program based on exercises, associated with a factor?s collection related to changing habits and guidance about symptoms associates to unbalance. Cotas universitárias: perspectivas de estudantes em situação de vestibular / University Quotas: Perspectives of students preparing for university entrance examination.

Fernanda Vieira Guarnieri 08 May 2008 (has links)
This study focuses on the issue of university quotas as public policy of affirmative action in higher education. Considering that this is a recent legislation and includes complex human themes, issues such as: ethnic, racial and social issues that affect the Brazilian identity reference, and because there are already several institutions offering quotas, it is necessary to monitor the impact of that type of measure on the various segments of society, especially among the people directly concerned, that is, the young people seeking entrance to university. This study aims to investigate the opinion of a group of preparation course students about it. The study was conducted in two stages. At first, 107 students registered in preparation courses, were divided into two groups: a group of community courses (group A, n = 53) and another, consisting of private courses (group B, n = 54). All of them answered a questionnaire containing questions that focused on the university quotas and other issues related to the object of study, such as: university entrance examination, access to higher education, racial and ethnic issues and the role of the Federal Government in the process of implementing affirmative action. In the second stage, three students from each group were interviewed individually. The data gathered from the questionnaire were analyzed quantitatively by means of descriptive statistics and application of Chi-Square Test. The qualitative analysis is underpinned by the Social-Cognitive approach of career development, with contributions from the Social Representation approach. The results showed that 54,7% of the students from Group A agreed with the quotas, while 81.5% from Group B disagreed. Group B seemed to be better informed, as 83.3% knew about the existence of at least 14 institutions of higher education offering quota programs, against 67.9% from group A. About the federal bill that establishes social and ethnic quotas in public universities, the percentage of group A who agrees with the implementation of the measure is significantly higher than that of group B (64.2% versus 14.8%). About the ethnic-racial issue, most of the participants agree that there is a racial bias against the black in Brazil (94.3% from A and 96.3% from B) and that whites and blacks are treated in different ways (83% of A and 87% of group B), slavery is considered to be the main cause of black poverty (71.7% from A and 88.9% from B). Other differences and similarities between the views of the two groups are analyzed and discussed.
