Sexually Suggestive Songs and Singers: Music Media and Its Effects on the Sexualization of WomenBrandt, Jessica 01 December 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between music and the sexualization of women. The study focused on 450 participants, both male and female, belonging to various ethnic backgrounds, ages 18 and up. It was hypothesized that a participant’s exposure to sexually suggestive music would impact their views of women. Specifically, exposure to sexual explicit or suggestive music would relate to more sexist views towards women. Results indicated that there were relationships between music and the sexualization of women. The breakdown of each genre of music and the different measures proved to be surprising, as some genres had a very strong correlation, while others had none at all. Overall, the results supported the idea that media, specifically music, does certainly have an impact on listeners and viewers. This supports most previous research, and disproves the very few studies that suggest otherwise.

Hegel and the Moral World ViewCampbell, David W. 04 1900 (has links)

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate Hegel's conception of morality. Kantian ethics, or to For Hegel, morality refers mainly to the "moral world-view." Hegelian morality is therefore primarily concerned with Kantian ethics and what Hegel considers to be the problems inherent within Kant's ethical system. Hegel's position on morality, as defined by the moral world-view, is that it is inadequate and must be sublimated into the societal norms of ethical life.

Hegel's dialectical movement to ethical life is based upon his criticisms of Kantian ethics. However, if a credible Kantian reply can be found to answer Hegel's criticisms, Hegel's moral dialectic becomes problematic. In this thesis I will clarify Hegel's position on morality and will conclude by providing a Kantian reply to Hegel's criticisms.

This thesis is divided into three chapters. In Chapter One, I introduce Hegel's critique of Kantian ethics within The Phenomenology of Spirit. In Chapter Two I explore He gel 's definition of morality wit h i nth e Philosophy of right . In the third and final chapter I analyze Hegel's critique of the moral world-view and provide a Kantian reply to Hegel's criticisms. I conclude by arguing that Kantian ethics can be defended against Hegel's criticisms, therefore Hegel's attempt to sublimate morality into ethical life is problematic.
/ Master of Arts (MA)

Parents' Views of and Participation in the Special Education ProcessFlanagan, Barbara G. 15 March 2001 (has links)
Parents’ views of and participation in the special education process are important in light of parents’ expanded membership in all decision making groups, specifically those that make eligibility and placement decisions guaranteed by The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 1997 (IDEA ’97). The purpose of this study was to understand how parents view the special education process and their participation from their child’s referral to eligibility determination. Furthermore, this study sought to determine how parents’ understanding and participation in the special education process could be enhanced.

Nine parents’ journeys through the special education referral and evaluation process were chronicled through pre-and post-eligibility parent interviews and observations of eligibility meetings. This data was contexualized through educator post-eligibility interviews to determine representativeness of parents’ participation and meeting characteristics.
Individual and cross case analyses were used to analyze data. Findings indicate that little has changed in the past 25 years in the day-to-day implementation of the special education evaluation process. That is, parents know little of the process and participate minimally. Furthermore, parents express feelings about their child and the process that indicate that they care deeply and feel a vested interest in outcomes. However, parents express a need for greater understanding and participation in the process. A model for the effective implementation of the special education process is offered. / Ph. D.

Inside + OutsideDelgado, Christina Michelle 29 August 2008 (has links)
A study of public and private space through human scale architectural elements: Window, Material and Path. The project is an urban infill that is very narrow and long, and incorporates an alley that connects one side of the block to another. The program combines a small restaurant with a home above for the family that owns it. Questions of light and privacy immediately arise, and the thesis begins.
A window is typically a two dimensional object that opens for light and air. Window is a dining room overlooking a garden or a large sill to sit on. Window is not only part of the façade but also breaks through it, bringing small private spaces beyond the building boundaries and defining the interior spaces of the home. Window is also a small skylight facing east, scooping in soft morning light to a bedroom.
The materials of a building are what it is made of: its cladding, waterproofing, walls and floors. Material makes an emotive space through touch and reflection. Concrete is heavy, rough and protective, Concrete is boundary. Contrastingly, Wood is soft, flexible and changing, Wood is home.
An alley is a narrow walkway, an undesirable secondary access point. How can an alley become Path? Path is an invitation to walk and be, Path is not the same from beginning to end. Path belongs to the city, the restaurant, and the pedestrian.
Inside + Outside studies what makes these public and private places at the human scale, and how architecture appeals to intuition rather than definition. / Master of Architecture

A web-based, run-time extensible architecture for interactive visualization and exploration of diverse dataConklin, Nathan James 10 February 2003 (has links)
Information visualizations must often be custom programmed to support complex user tasks and database schemas. This is an expensive and time consuming effort, even when general-purpose visualizations are utilized within the solution. This research introduces the Snap visualization server and system architecture that addresses limitations of previous Snap-Together Visualization research and satisfies the need for flexibility in information visualizations. An enhanced visualization model is presented that formalizes multiple-view visualization in terms of the relational data model. An extensible architecture is introduced that enables flexible construction and component integration. It allows the integration of diverse data, letting users spend less time massaging the data prior to visualization. The web-based server enables universal access, easy distribution, and the ability to intermix and exploit existing components. This web-based software architecture provides a strong foundation for future multiple-view visualization development. / Master of Science
