It is ordinary sentence in studies of national and international research that women feel more fear than men in public space. The fear of violence towards them or their children or even the simple feeling of insecurity are presented as limiting the use of public spaces, resulting in female collective" standards " of times and locations allowed in the city. Based on the argument of fear can be seen as a social or as a urban issue, theorists and scholars who produced reflections of fear in the public space were highlighted. Jane Jacobs (2000), Oscar Newman (1972), Bill Hillier (1988) and Ray Jeffery (1971) and their followers provided a rich discussion about crime prevention through urban design and the raise of security sense, reducing the fear of crime. In general, besides the environmental characteristics of the space, these authors relate the insecurity feeling to the way that public space is used: Surveillance presence (formal or informal), activities, maintenance and flow of people in space. Focusing on women, Rossana Tavares (2012), Sônia Calió (1997), Gil Valentine (1989), Rachel Pain (2000) and Alice Taylor (2011) understood that fear of women in public space is one more expression of patriarchal society. Whether through the androcentrism of studies and urban planning, whether by the sense of vulnerability of the male figure, the life experiences or some secondary information, the women fear in public space is a result of men domination over women still existing in our society. This work on the assumption that the experience of women fear in public space is influenced by the relationship between the spatial aspects and the social. That said, we sought to understand how this relation occurs and how that influence in the experience of women fear in public space through investigative exercise that came from a national and international theoretical framework and the contextualization through empirical research in Recife’s Downtown.

Violence by intimate partner during pregnancy is a very important theme for public health. Though it is possible to find in the literature several articles on this problem, few have reported the association of this violence with maternal and personal violence antecedents. This is a nested, population-based control case study and it aimed to investigate the association of intimate partner during pregnancy with maternal and personal antecedents among pregnant women registered in the pre-natal examination by the Strategy for Family Health of the Sanitary District II in Recife, Pernambuco, between July 2005 and December 2006. One thousand one hundred twenty women that found themselves above the thirtieth pregnancy week were interviewed. The prevalence found were: 30.9% experienced intimate partner during pregnancy; 38.8% physical aggression before 15 years; 22.9% physical aggression after 15 years; 36.4% had a life experience of mother aggression; 10.4% sexual violence before 15 years and 6.3% of sexual violence after 15 years. The multivariate analysis was carried out through logistic regression. The women who reported intimate partner during pregnancy presented a greater probability of experiencing physical aggression before 15 years (OR = 2.10), physical aggression after 15 years (OR = 1.71), life experience of mother aggression (OR = 1.50) and sexual violence before 15 years (OR = 1.78). The acknowledgment and identification of the perpetuation of the violence cycle in the history of women, particularly in this delicate phase of change that is pregnancy, can contribute to preventing and fighting this damage.

Gender-based Violence : A Comparative Study of Gender-based Violence in Afghanistan and Armenia

Otendal, Ellen January 2023 (has links)
Despite the amount of studies conducted in the field and actions taken, gender-based violence continues to be rampant in both Afghanistan and Armenia. This study investigates potential causes and factors as to why the two societies look and function the way it does. By conducting a comparative case study by using a most similar system design, the aim with the thesis is to gain a broader understanding of why the women of Afghanistan and Armenia are suffering to these levels. Experiences of Afghan and Armenian women will be studied together with the legal and social construction of the countries. The study is primarily based on the theoretical framework of factors contributing to gender-based violence. The combination of sources that have been selected and used have done so in order to create as fair and representative a picture of Afghan and Armenian society and the experiences of the women living there as possible.
