"Eyre," a Three Movement Instrumental Work for Small Chamber Ensemble

Hodges, Glen J. (Glen John) 05 1900 (has links)
"Eyre" is a composition of approximately sixteen minutes duration for an instrumental ensemble consisting of two flutes, oboe, B𝄭 clarinet, bassoon, guitar, and cello. It is inspired by a large seasonal lake basin in South Australia of the same name. The piece is divided into three movements; the first is fast and quasi sonata-allegro form without the recapitulation; the second is slow and through-composed; and the third, essentially the missing recapitulation from the first movement. Much of the motivic material for the piece is derived from the initial progression of triads. Harmonic and melodic development of this material contains some modal tendencies. While the overall effect tends toward equal weighting of the instrumental forces, there is some featuring of the guitar and an interplay between the woodwind and string instruments.

Just Intonation and the Revitalization of Neoclassicism: Three Works for Baroque Instruments

Figg, Graham Elliot 05 1900 (has links)
For a composer of today, the relationship between new music and music from many centuries past remains problematic. In order to create something new, it is necessary to go beyond previous techniques of composition in some way. At the same time, new music that has no connection with music of the past runs the risk of irrelevance. Just tuning offers one possibility for reconciling this problem. By effectively warping music of the past through the lens of altered tuning and contemporary composition techniques, music of the past may be understood in previously unknown ways. Part I, the critical essay, presents historical background and analysis of a cycle of three works in altered/just tuning. Part II presents scores of the works.

Bohuslav Martinu: An Examination of Selected Chamber Music Involving the Clarinet

Walzel, Robert L. 12 1900 (has links)
The discussion dealt with stylistic influences, compositional techniques, and performance considerations of chamber music involving clarinet composed by Bohuslav Martinu and included a performance of three of his works: Quartet. for clarinet, horn, cello, and side drum, Madrigals for oboe, clarinet, and bassoon, and Sextet for flute, oboe, clarinet, two bassoons, and piano. The selections performed and discussed in the lecture show compositional growth of the composer through the three periods of his life in which he composed chamber music which included winds. These three time periods are 1923-40 during his residency in Paris, 1941-56 during his residency in the United States, and 1957 until his death in 1959 when he returned permanently to Europe.

Benjamin Britten's Sonata in C for Cello and Piano, Op. 65: A Practical Guide for Performance

Lee, Jeong-A 05 1900 (has links)
Benjamin Britten is a renowned and prolific English composer, well known for his operas and vocal works. He did, however, also compose five works especially for the cello as a solo instrument of which the Sonata in C for Cello and Piano Op. 65 was the first. He was inspired by one of his musical contemporaries, the remarkable Soviet cellist, Mstislav Rostropovich. Rostropovich was famous for his amazing artistry which propelled him to become one of the most prominent cellists in the world during his time. Thus Britten, who had previously only composed for cello as part of ensembles, created this sonata specifically thinking of Rostropovich and his outstanding skill as a cellist. The premiere of the sonata took place in July 1961 at the Aldeburgh Festival and it was a great success. However, despite Britten's reputation as an outstanding composer and the significance of the sonata, this sonata has been performed infrequently. Britten utilized many challenging techniques and adapted them innovatively in the composition, and perhaps performers may be reluctant to choose this work due to the complexity and challenge inherent in the composition itself. The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a practical guide for students and those who wish to learn and perform Britten's Sonata in C for Cello and Piano, Op. 65 by increasing understanding of the work, and by offering practical assistance.

The employment of historically-informed performance practices in present-day tuba performances of two Italian baroque violoncello transcriptions.

Coker, Bradley Gene 05 1900 (has links)
As several Italian baroque violoncello transcriptions have entered the standard performance repertory for both high school and collegiate tubists, and as numerous texts, articles, and baroque performance instruction courses have illuminated a new realm of performance possibilities, no published document has provided specific, thorough, and sample approaches to performance on the tuba of a given piece (or pieces) through a detailed application of materials found in any singular source or combination of sources. Many of the existing articles and texts that approach the subject focus largely on ornamentation, while limiting the discussion and application of the following topics: tempo, spirit, affect, notation, rhythm, dynamics, and articulation. This document examines such topics and provides detailed explanations and suggestions of historically-informed characteristics applicable to two movements each from the R. Winston Morris transcription of Antonio Vivaldi's Sonata No. 3 in A Minor and the Donald C. Little/Richard B. Nelson transcription of Benedetto Marcello's Sonata No. V in C Major.

Lacruz Zorita, María Desamparados 30 December 2022 (has links)
Mexico is the Latin American country that presents the largest number of works and the oldest tradition of compositions for this instrument, since the first Latin American concerto for cello and orchestra was written by Ricardo Castro, around 1890. Given the poor dissemination of this legacy, the objective of this thesis is to reveal the historical importance, singularity, heterogeneity and artistic value of the Mexican cello repertoire, through the musicological analysis of a selection of representative works written by the most significant composers of each generation, as well as the observation of the aesthetic evolution that they describe, from the post-romanticism at the end of the 19th century to the avant-garde of the 20th century. The interdisciplinary methodology used covers the fields of conscious listening, thought after perception, sociopolitical and cultural study of Mexico, musical analysis appropriate to each language, interpretation of works and assessment for the performance of each work in relation to its particular characteristic and the place it occupies in the author's work. In each of the three chapters, we contrast works for cello by two composers belonging to the same sociopolitical moment. Those of Ricardo Castro (1864-1906) and Manuel M. Ponce (1882-1948) are pioneers of their genre in Latin America and different representations of the search process for Mexican identity. Julián Carrillo (1875 -1956) and Carlos Chávez (1899-1978) provide two different visions of the path that Mexican music had to follow from the historical moment of the 1910 Revolution. Manuel Enríquez (1926-1994) and Mario Lavista (1943-2021) share the cosmopolitan ideal of the avant-garde of the second half of the 20th century. The research carried out shows that the selected works contribute significantly to the development of the cello as a solo instrument and that their authors enrich the musical languages of the 20th century with individuality and idiosyncrasy. / Lacruz Zorita, MD.
