A Study in Human Resources Utilization: A Critical Examination of the Role of the Self-Concept in the Vocational Choice Process of College Students

Davis, Jefferson Jackson 12 1900 (has links)
The specific problem confronted by this dissertation research is this: Do college students who are quite decided about their vocational choices have more developed and implemented self-concepts than do college students who are quite undecided about their vocational choices? If the decided students have more developed and implemented self-concepts than the undecided students, it can be logically reasoned that the developing and implementing of the self-concept is essential in the vocational choice process of college students. The purpose of this study is to resolve the problem concerning the possible self-conceptual differences between highly decided and highly undecided college students.

Singular Plots: Female Vocation and Radical Form in the Nineteenth-Century Novel

Wilwerding, Lauren Elizabeth January 2017 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Maia M. McAleavey / “Singular Plots” challenges the commonplace that the marriage plot defines the nineteenth-century British novel by uncovering the plot of vocational singleness. In this plot, a heroine renounces marriage and seeks another occupation – caring for parents or siblings; participating in philanthropy, business, or art. “Singular Plots” traces the history of representations of single women, arguing that unmarried women were often represented as plotless in the early century, while around mid-century the vocational plot coalesced in novels including Brontë’s Villette, Trollope’s The Small House at Allington, and Charlotte Yonge’s The Daisy Chain. In order to uncover vocational plots that exist alongside and against marriage plots, I advocate a method of reading called “analeptic reading” in which readers pivot from the final pages back to the more radical center and outward past the end – a process that expands our notion of which moments in a plot can be definitive. The project joins recent work by scholars including Sharon Marcus and Talia Schaffer to challenge and expand our understanding of the role of the marriage plot in nineteenth-century literature. “Singular Plots” uncovers single women as a group with uniquely and instructively particular relationships to gender, marriage, work, and the form of the novel itself. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2017. / Submitted to: Boston College.

Puertas, Kelly Cristina Pereira. January 2016 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The present theoretical-style paper consisted of a study on the psychic processes that are implied in vocation; in what "calls" the individual into an action, concerning specifically the usage of this expression in the work field; in the elements that lead the individual to a professional/occupational choice, not any choice among many, but the one that they understand fulfilling the requirements of a role they were called to accomplish. Having this objective, we based upon the Freudian psychoanalytical thesis, aiming at uncovering the mechanisms that permeate the psychic processing resulting in what we conventionally call vocation. We listed the fundamental concepts of Freudian psychoanalytical theory that, as we understand, are found involved with the notion of vocation, that are: overdetermination, notion of object, object choice and neurosis, identification, the ideal of Ego and Superego. We treated those theoretical settlements from the Freudian metapsychology, as far as possible, aiming at extracting utmost comprehension of the psychic apparatus' functioning that leads to/produces the emerging of vocation. Thereby, we discuss the vocation notion as a psychical process supported by topographical, dynamical and economical aspects. Vocation, in a psychoanalytical conception, can be understood as a call from the Superego so that the Ego undertakes activities by which it can obtain some kind of satisfaction, even if palliative. This conception that the individual constitutes ... Organizational Calling and Safety: the Role of Workload and Supervisor Support

Mansfield, Layla Rhiannon 23 February 2018 (has links)
Research suggests that individuals who perceive their work as a calling (a deep passion and meaningfulness associated with a certain domain) experience a variety of positive outcomes such as occupational identification, career decidedness, and job satisfaction. Utilizing the tenets of Social Exchange Theory and the Job Demands Resources Model, I proposed that individuals with greater calling toward their occupation will report higher safety motivation and safety compliance. However, under conditions of high workload this relationship would be attenuated. Further, by the same rationale, individuals with lower calling will report lower safety outcomes, yet I proposed that this relationship is mitigated under conditions of high supervisor support. The study was conducted with a sample of 183 participants collected across three forests within the United States Forest Service. Although the hypotheses in the study were not supported, this study provides theoretical groundwork elucidating the link between calling and the examined outcome - safety. This, in turn, will aid in the development of a number of potential research avenues for safety scholars, with many practical implications. Further, an examination of calling with other collected variables within this industry provides avenues for future research in the calling domain. The investigation of moderators may help to explain the conflicting results found in the calling literature. Finally, this study furthers our understanding of safety, workload, and supervisor support within a "helping field."
