The Role of Occupational Values and Support in Career Choice: An Emphasis on Women in ScienceMeikle, Heather 01 May 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine how occupational values and social support for career pursuits influenced career choice, with a specific focus on women in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). A sample of 62 college graduates participated in telephone interviews that addressed gender differences in seven occupational values and three sources of social support. Results showed that differences in occupational values differ by both gender and between individuals in STEM and non-STEM careers. The strength of STEM values better predicted a career in STEM than did gender. Finally, women in STEM received the least amount of social support for their career pursuits. These results underscore the need to encourage women's interest in STEM, and develop interventions for career counselors that specifically address the unique needs of women in non-traditional careers.

College Identity and Congruence of Occupational Plans: A Longitudinal StudyZeranski, Lauren A. 01 January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The college years can be a period of significant identity exploration and development. Data from a longitudinal study of psychosocial development in college and beyond was analyzed to examine the relationship between levels of identity in college and congruence between career plans made in college and later career outcomes, 10 and 20 years after graduation. Results indicated no significant relationship between level of college identity and career congruence, due to the limited variance in level of college identity development. Gender, marital status, and parental status did not influence this relationship. Support is provided for the developmental theory of Emerging Adulthood.

Student Psychological Distress in a Career Exploration CourseBelisle, Roger H. 18 July 2005 (has links) (PDF)
A gap in the literature exists on the connection between an individual's career and non-career domains. Even less research exists on the topic of career development and how it relates to an individual's mental health. Accordingly, this study sought to investigate the connection between career issues and mental health by exploring the psychological distress levels of students enrolled in a career exploration course. During the course, students completed a bi-weekly online survey, the Outcome Questionnaire (OQ-45). Results support the possible connection between career issues and mental health and also show that for certain populations, career guidance interventions may decrease an individual's psychological distress.

La universidad como espacio de intervención en orientación profesional: una experiencia en la Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC)Navarrete Talavera, Patricia, Peralta Kuan, Daniel 06 March 2015 (has links)
The present article constitutes a reflection about the University as a space for intervention in
vocational and professional orientation, taking into account the work presently done as well as
the actual theoretical discussions and taking as a reference the experiences that are being
developed at the Peruvian University of Applied Sciences nowadays. Professional orientation is
conceived as the meaning and importance that the vocational development of a person has,
understanding that this does not necessarily corresponds to one moment in your life, but that it
develops in a permanent manner during your entire life cycle. Given that, in the world that we
live in, the generation of knowledge and the demands for training are continuous, orientation
takes a primordial role in the professional formation of the students and thus, in the University’s
system that shelters us too. Therefore, it becomes necessary to generate new job offers that
contemplate jointly: the educational model, the professors’ job, the services of the jobs that are
available and the Orientation Area.

The effect of the summer training program on midshipmen career choice at the United States Naval AcademyCasals, Rodolfo 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / The main purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the Summer Training Program (STP) on vocational development of midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy. To test this a sample of 615 first-class midshipmen and 615 second-class midshipmen from the classes of 2002-2004 completed a survey regarding their experiences on summer cruise. Survey answers were grouped into several factors derived from a review of the literature in vocational psychology. The relationship between these factors and their final warfare community preferences were analyzed using several cross-tabulations, univariate tests and multivariate models. Cross-tabulations showed that only 25% of midshipmen change their warfare community preference during the last two years at the Academy. Independent Pearson Correlation (r) showed the affect of each of the different factors on warfare community selection. Of the different variables identified: gender, academic major, running-mate qualification/experience, and ship morale were found to have an impact on the desire to select surface warfare at the conclusion of the summer training experience. The multivariate models (logit) verified that the above variables were significant in determining the choice of warfare community and also showed that observed ship morale was the dominant factor above all others in helping to form career interests. / Lieutenant, United States Navy

Psychohygiena jako oblast osobnostního a profesního rozvoje budoucích učitelů 1. stupně / Mental hygiene as a field of personality and vocational development of future primary teachersNováková, Marie January 2021 (has links)
My diploma thesis deals with the issue of mental hygiene as a field of personality and vocational development of future primary teachers. The aim of theoretical part is to summarize the facts about teacher's profession, which are an argument for systematic mental hygiene development of teacher students. One of the goals is to describe the study of teaching as my respondents in empirical part are future teachers. The next aim is to find answers to what attitudes, knowledge and skills should teachers have to be able to prevent burnout syndrome, to be resistant to stress and to be active in their approach to personality and professional development. The practical part was realized by a mixed research among students of the primary teaching who are in the 1st and the 5th grade. The research questions were: What is the approach of the students of teaching to the personality development in the 1st grade and in the 5th grade? What are the competencies of the future primary teachers in the 1st grade and in the 5th grade in a burnout area? To what extent do the future primary teachers know in the 1st grade and in the 5th grade about the risk of burnout (what does it cause, what are the manifestations of burnout and how to prevent it)? Data were collected by the questionnaire method. My research shows that...

The Effects of a Group Vocational Counseling Method on Selected Variables Among Community College StudentsMelkus, Roger A. 12 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a group vocational counseling method among community college students. The purposes of this study are to present an application of developmental counseling to group vocational counseling with community college students, and to determine whether this vocational counseling program will have an effect upon certain selected variables. Self-concept congruence was measured by a semantic differential, the Personal Concept Scale; and vocational maturity was measured by the Attitude Scale of the Vocational Development Inventory. Anxiety associated with the concepts "myself," "other people," "choosing a career," and "five years from now" was assessed by the Concept-Specific Anxiety Scale. Certainty and satisfaction with vocational plans were assessed by eleven-point rating scales included on the Vocational Status Sheet, an instrument designed specifically for the present study. Included on this same instrument was a check list designed to measure vocational information gathering activity.
