Profile extrusion of wood plastic cellular composites and formulation evaluation using compression molding

Islam, Mohammad Rubyet 01 May 2010 (has links)
Wood Plastic Composites (WPCs) have experienced a healthy growth during the last decade. However, improvement in properties is necessary to increase their utility for structural applications. The toughness of WPCs can be improved by creating a fine cellular structure while reducing the density. Extrusion processing is one of the most economical methods for profile formation. For our study, rectangular profiles were extruded using a twin-screw extrusion system with different grades of HDPE and with varying wood fibre and lubricant contents together with maleated polyethylene (MAPE) coupling agent to investigate their effects on WPC processing and mechanical properties. Work has been done to redesign the extrusion system setup to achieve smoother and stronger profiles. A guiding shaper, submerged in the water, has been designed to guide the material directly through water immediately after exiting the die; instead of passing it through a water cooled vacuum calibrator and then through water. In this way a skin was formed quickly that facilitated the production of smoother profiles. Later on chemical blowing agent (CBA) was used to generate cellular structure in the profile by the same extrusion system. CBA contents die temperatures, drawdown ratios (DDR) and wood fibre contents (WF) were varied for optimization of mechanical properties and morphology. Cell morphology and fibre alignment was characterized by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). A new compression molding system was developed to help in quick evaluation of different material formulations. This system forces the materials to flow in one direction to achieve higher net alignment of fibres during sample preparation, which is the case during profile extrusion. Operation parameters were optimized and improvements in WPC properties were observed compared to samples prepared by conventional hot press and profile extrusion. / UOIT

Desenvolvimento de margarina probiótica e simbiótica: viabilidade do probiótico no produto e resistência in vitro / Development of probiotic and synbiotic margarine: viability of probiotic in the product and in vitro resistance

Souza, Cínthia Hoch Batista de 05 November 2010 (has links)
This study aimed to determine the viability of probiotic Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis Bb-12 incorporated in margarine, with inulin, whey protein concentrate (WPC) and caseinomacropeptide (CMP) supplementation. In addition, the in vitro resistance of Bb-12 incorporated in margarine and related properties were evaluated. Seven margarine-making trials (60% of fat: 60% of palm oil +40% canola oil) were produced, using a mixture model, where inulin, WPC and CMP were the variables studied. Also, a control formulation without these ingredients was manufactured. The use of blending palm oil with canola oil improved the margarine formulations nutritionally, providing products containing essential fatty acids in its composition and absence of trans fatty acids. The formulations M1 to M7, except M2 after 21 days of storage, revealed satisfactory Bb-12 populations for a probiotic food, with counts above 6 log CFU/g during 35 days of storage at 5±1ºC. Margarines supplemented with inulin presented suitable Bb-12 populations throughout the whole storage period, reaching up to 8 log CFU/g by the end of storage (M1). Also, M3 and M6, revealed Bb-12 populations of 6.87 log CFU/g and of 7.27 log CFU/g (day 35), respectively. In contrast, M8 was not characterized as probiotic margarine, since it showed Bb-12 populations below 6 log CFU/g on day 1. Even though whey protein is largely employed in probiotic foods, margarine supplementation with WPC without inulin or CMP did not lead to Bb-12 satisfactory populations, decreasing from 7.82 (day 1) to 4.64 log CFU/g (M2, day 35) (p<0.05). During the whole in vitro assays, Bb-12 survived significantly better (p<0.05) in M1 and revealed populations above 6 log CFU/g after 6h even after 28 days. M2 populations decreased drastically during the in vitro assays for all storage period tested (reduction of 5 log CFU/g after 2h of in vitro assays on day 7 and populations of 2.8 log CFU/g after 6h). For the other formulations, Bb-12 populations decreased 2 log CFU/g after 2h of the in vitro assays. However, for M1, M2 and M5 (on day 14 and 28) the populations of Bb-12 increased significantly (p<0.05) between the gastric phase (2h) and the enteric phase (6h). Formulations containing inulin, mainly M1, showed a significant decrease in pH values during the whole storage period (p<0.05). However, this ingredient did not affect the sensory quality of products, since no significant differences between formulations after 7 and 14 days of storage were observed (p>0.05). The supplementation of margarine with inulin and CMP guaranteed appropriate Bb-12 populations during storage for at least 28 days, and also contributed for its survival throughout the in vitro assays. Therefore, margarine might be considered an appropriate food matrix for Bb-12 survival, mainly when inulin is also added.

Untersuchungen zum tribologischen Verhalten von hochgefüllten WPC (Wood Polymer Composite) als Maschinenbaukomponente / Investigations to the tribological behavior of highly filled WPC in functional machine elements

Eichhorn, Sven, Clauß, Brit, Nendel, Klaus 05 July 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of the research was to create basic knowledge for the use of highly filled WPC in tribological functional machine elements, e. g. sliding rails in conveyors. Based on a short-term test of several highly filled WPCs with polypropylene matrix (PP matrix), the impact of several parameters on the long-term performance of WPC was investigated. These parameters were: a rising proportion of wood, an immersion in water over 700 hours and the matrix itself. In that case the PP matrix was replaced by a polyethylene matrix (PE matrix).

Clauß, Brit, Gehde, Michael, Nendel, Klaus, Eichhorn, Sven 24 September 2009 (has links) (PDF)

The objective of this study was to use Raman spectroscopy and Rapid Viscosity Analyzer (RVA) in the study of chemical properties of Whey Protein Concentrates (WPC), aiming to identify intrinsic attributes of the products during processing or during industrial use. By means of Raman spectroscopy, it was possible to identify the structure of the lactose present in the WPC samples, obtained in a pilot plant under different technological parameters, due to the characteristics of the physical state of this sugar in the powder particles. The crystallization process of the lactose has been identified in different repetitions of treatments because of the spectral changes occurring in the region of 2900 cm-1 and especially in the region between 1200 and 800 cm-1. These changes in the profile of the spectra were attributed to phase change process of amorphous lactose to crystalline lactose, which occurs during the appearance of new bands due to the lowering of symmetry in the phase transition. The RVA was used to evaluate the synergistic behavior of WPC containing rehydrated protein systems, to elucidate the effect of different protein structures of these systems in various thermal processing under the influence of pH, allowing to a better optimization of definition of products and processes. The interpretation of reactions and interactions that occur simultaneously among the protein constituents of these systems in dispersion during thermal processing is still a major challenge, and this work was carried out by observing the rheological changes in viscosity during the heating ramp, using 10 specific analytical parameters obtained from the viscographic profiles. The study showed a clear influence of pH 5.5 in the elevation of at least 5°C in the initial temperature of the start-up viscosity of the protein systems and the impact of different protein ratios at pH 7.0 in the profile of viscographic curves, the main agent being the synergistic effect between the reactions and interactions of caseins with whey proteins during processing. This study reinforces the importance of Raman spectroscopy as an analytical tool in characterizing the physical state of lactose and the RVA as an analytical tool used in the simulation of industrial processes involving protein systems and also the use of start-up viscosity ramp as a means of interpretation of the interactions of its components in relation to thermal treatment related changes.

Weiterverarbeitung von WPC für technische Anwendungen

Clauß, Brit, Gehde, Michael, Nendel, Klaus, Eichhorn, Sven 28 June 2010 (has links) (PDF)

Disserta??o (Mestrado Profissional) ? Four formulations were prepared with the same ingredients varying only the NaCl and sodium nitrite concentrations, namely: control (1.3% NaCl and 0.5% sodium nitrite); P2 (0.25% sodium nitrite and 0.25% WPC), P3 (0.65% NaCl and 0.65% WPC) and P4 (0.25% sodium nitrite, 0.65 % NaCl and 0.9% WPC). The physico-chemical characterization of the raw batter (chemical composition, in salt-soluble proteins, emulsion stability, pH and color) and the chemical analysis (content of residual sodium nitrite) and stability for 28 days (lipid oxidation, pH and color) of the chicken pat?s were performed. The analysis of variance, in a randomised complete block design, was performed for investigating the significant effects between treatments (p < 0.05). The Tukey test was applied to establish the differences among averages. Regarding the raw batter, the p?t? had the legal requirements for the content of proteins, lipids and moisture. Furthermore, the WPC incorporation increased emulsion stability in some samples, but with some changes in color parameters. For the cooked chicken pates, a reduction of sodium levels of 34.6% (P3) and 42.6% (P4) were obtained, and this samples may be considered as light products. Over the storage period (0-28 days), no changes in pH and color parameters were observed, however, the shelf-life was limited by lipid oxidation. It was concluded that it was possible to prepare chicken pate with low chloride and sodium nitrite levels, thus obtaining healthier products.

The traditional sources of protein are being increasingly used as ingredients for a large number of formulated foods. The techno-functional properties of proteins are related to various general and molecular characteristics such as hydration, surface activity and type of protein-protein interactions, facilitated by partial unfolding of structures. From these interactions, the medium pH is presented as a major interferer in intensity and type of reaction that takes place. The intensity of denaturation and interaction of different proteins occur in different forms and intensity accordingly to the pH value of the medium in which they are located. This study aimed to verify the influence of interactions between whey /casein in the evolution of the viscosity and texture profile of dairy products at different pH values, using Rapid Viscosity Analyzer (RVA) simulator and its technological application in processed cheese. We have analyzed samples of commercial whey protein concentrate (WPC) and milk protein concentrate (MPC). The solid-liquid concentration of the solution measured in the RVA was 0.3 g.g-1 of dry weight in water due to the high sensitivity of the system to solid concentration. The solution was adjusted to pH values of 6.0, 6.5 and 7.0. The results were interpreted in terms of the final viscosity after processing at RVA. It was possible to optimize the different conditions of variables of concentrated protein solution and of the pH of the solution with the interpretation of the obtained viscosity profiles with reference to the thermal behavior of MPC and WPC. The RVA can be considered an emerging analytical tool for the study and knowledge of the technological features, using the analysis to estimate the viscosity of protein denaturation. It was also possible to optimize the different proportions of WPC and MPC to change the parameters of texture for creamy processed cheese and the pH was also an influencing factor in this optimization.
