Impact of Walnuts on Blood Pressure in a Small Convenience Sample of African Americans in Mississippi

Barnes, Camille N 14 December 2018 (has links)
Hypertension is the cause of about 7.5 million deaths per year, globally. More than 40% of African Americans are diagnosed with hypertension. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of walnut consumption on blood pressure in a small convenience sample of African Americans in Mississippi. Fifty subjects participated in the study. Blood pressure was measured once a week for three weeks prior to the initiation of the intervention for a baseline data of the subjects’ normal blood pressure. During the 6-week intervention, the participants consumed a package of walnuts, daily. Blood pressure was measured weekly. The results of the study indicate that there was no significant impact on systolic pressure (MD: 1.61; CI: -.979, 4.20; p=.217) or diastolic pressure (MD: .806; CI: -.905, 2.51; p=.349). Future studies should be performed with more participants, higher dose of walnuts, and a longer trial period.

Niño de Guzmán Bario, Carol Anell, Torres Almeida, Gabriela 09 October 2021 (has links)
The present research work aims to know the barriers that limited the exports of Brazil Nuts from Madre de Dios through the South Interoceanic Highway during the period 2015 - 2019. To this end, throughout this study the main objective is to understand the relevance of access to credit, entrepreneurial capacity, logistics and customs operations as limiting barriers to exports of Brazil Nuts from Madre de Dios through the South Interoceanic Highway during the period 2015 - 2019. Likewise, the qualitative phenomenological design was applied with explanatory scope and a search was made for information from secondary sources, including the antecedents. Then, the problematic reality shows the reasons to delve into the limitations on chestnut exports. Additionally, the problems, objectives and hypotheses were formulated, which will give an answer to the research question. Regarding the search for primary sources, semi-structured interviews were conducted with interest groups. Subsequently, the Atlas.ti software was used for the analysis of the information obtained, which was contrasted with the background of the theoretical framework. After analyzing the information, it was possible to understand the relevance of the barriers that limit Brazil Nut exports from Madre de Dios through the South Interoceanic Highway. In this sense, the first barrier corresponds to access to credit, followed by logistics and customs operations, and finally, entrepreneurial capacity. / Tesis
