Environmentální bezpečnost systému odpadních vod / Protection of the untreated sewage water environmental

The topic "Environmental Security of Wastewater System" was selected for the creation of my thesis by several fundamental reasons.The main one is the vital importance of water for the functioning of human society.Drinking water sources are limited and the current relatively easy access to good quality water leads to irresponsible waste of this commodity.Besides wasting there is another big problem with environmental pollution,which is closely related to the degradation of sources of drinking water.With the increase of human population,environmental conditions began to worsen rapidly and this issue became to be discussed by multinational organizations.The so-called Environmental Security is currently very topical subject.It is introduced gradually into school curricula.Large amounts of funds have been invested to the environmental safety of water management in the past few years.An especially,there have been build many waste water treatment plants.The thesis is oriented locally on the municipality of Příbram.Its administrative area covers 74 municipalities and military training area of Brdy.The administrative area is mostly formed by smaller communities that are self-sustaining in water management.It is necessary to ensure sufficiently good conditions of the environment to prevent its degradation.The aim of this thesis is mainly to map the impacts of failure of sewage system and eventual propose of appropriate interim solutions of such failure.The research question is closely related to it: What is the current level of environmental safety of water? To achieve the set objectives,primarily I applied the method of literary research,through which was described the basic information necessary to understand the issue.It was also used method of qualitative research,which was carried out on the basis of interviews with experts in that field.The collected data were organized in a logical survey and analyzed by the a SWOT analysis.The thesis is divided into two main sections.The first one is a theoretical part,which describes the water cycle,explains what is infrastructure and,consequently,it highlights the importance of critical infrastructure.It also explains the concept of water management and presents the basic characteristics and methods of processing and treatment of drinking and waste water.It also states the basic legislation governing the issue of water and ultimately defines the concept of environmental security.The second part describes the sewage system in the area of Příbram and maps the ways of creation and the subsequent magnitude of failure of analyzed wastewater treatment plants.In direct relation to this,it assesses the possible emergence of environmental impact.Waste water can be divided into several groups according to where and how they arise.Taking account of their origin,wastewater may contain a wide variety of harmful substances.A failure of the wastewater system would be not only a current problem of environmental pollution at the site where the waste water was getting into the nature,but a long term adverse effect,which would be later manifested in the form of,for example,contamination of soil and groundwater,which would subsequently mix with drinking water resources.It could also lead to the death of some animals,disabling eating crops in that location and spread of various infectious diseases.This condition is highly undesirable and therefore it is necessary to implement preventive measures to prevent environmental safety.From this research,it was found that the formation of potentially serious impacts on the environment due to the failure of the sewage disposal plants in the area of Příbram is not expected.The operators are ready to remove immediately and quite efficiently incurred defects in order to avoid serious long-term failure.In relation to this,the environmental safety of the sewage disposal plants in the area of Příbram can be evaluated as very good.

Development of an energy model in system modeling language for future automated residential building applications

Thesis (MTech(Electrical Engineering)) -- Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2014 / Today the building energy modeling industry is facing a number of challenges, the advanced programs or methods developed for building energy modeling, are very technical and complex to be used, especially for earlier designs, and the easy programs or methods are not accurate. Moreover, more than a hundred programs developed for energy modeling, have been used in the same building, but most of the time the results differed by about 30%. That is why this thesis has developed a new building energy model in System Modeling Language (SysML), in order to meet, at the same time, the accuracy and the simplicity to be used for future and existing buildings. In this thesis, SysML has been used to develop an energy model and to set up an automation system to the existing building. SysML can do more than simulations, but this thesis is limited to only the simulations steps by using easy applications of SysML and fewer diagrams which could develop in a complete building energy model. SysML is the extension of Unified modeling Language (UML), which uses fewer diagrams than UML. SysML is simple, open and more flexible to be used in any Engineering System. The previous chapter describes SysML and gives the overview and the platform of SysML. The simulations of SysML in this project have been developed through Enterprise Architect and Mat lab software. The inputs used to simulate the program are the parameters of the existing building chosen for modeling that is a student residential building complex located in Stellenbosch, Western Cape in South Africa. Automation system program used in this thesis was based on the norms and building standards of South Africa, renewable energy and the requirements of the buildings’ occupants, in order to meet energy efficiency and safety of the occupants.

Os condutores horizontais dos sistemas de coleta de esgotos sanitários, no Brasil e em quase todos os países do mundo, tem sido dimensionados considerando-se o escoamento em regime permanente, o que na realidade não ocorre. Sabendo-se que o escoamento no interior destes condutores acontece em regime não permanente, caracterizado pelo movimento de ondas, devido a aleatoriedade de uso dos aparelhos. Neste trabalho, apresentamos o estudo do escoamento não permanente, verificado, nos ramais e coletores dos sistemas de coleta de esgotos sanitários de edifícios residenciais. As equações diferenciais da continuidade e da quantidade de movimento, que regem este escoamento, são resolvidas pelo método das características. Apresentamos, também, os resultados e análise de várias simulações do programa de computador desenvolvido com base no método das características pelo professor Swaffield, da Universidade Heriot-Watt, Escócia. Os dados de entrada para estas simulações foram obtidos a partir de ensaios laboratoriais de algumas configurações de ambientes sanitários brasileiros, também apresentados neste trabalho. Os resultados destas simulações mostram que a consideração do escoamento em regime não permanente, possibilita a redução dos diâmetros dos ramais e coletores, e consequentemente, a redução dos custos destes sistemas. / Usually horizontal waste pipes of Building Drainage Systems, in Brazil and almost all of countries in the world, are dimensioned considering a steady flow, that does not exist. The random use of the sanitary appliances connected to the Drainage Systems of the building is the responsible for the unsteady flow. We present a study of unsteady partially filled pipeflow for drains and sewers. The differential equations of continuity and motion are solved via the method of characteristics. We present, also, the results and analysis of several simulations using a computational program developed by Prof. Swaffield-Heriot - Watt University, Scotland. The data entry were obtained through laboratorial tests which considered brazilian bathroom configurations, presented in this work. The results show us that the consideration of unsteady flow conduct to the reductions of horizontal waste pipes diameters, consequently to the reduction of the Building Drainage Systems costs.

The master thesis is focused on the design of sanitary technical installations and pipeline in the pension for the elderly, in the cadastral area of Hodonín city. The pension is located in a plane terrain and is designed with four storeys, a partial basement and 3 aboveground floors. There are staff facilities, changing rooms, technical facilities, offices, gym, laundry, furniture storeroom, tool storeroom and maintenance room in underground floor. On the first floor there are kitchen, various storerooms, doctor, nursing facilities,meeting rooms and in the third part of the building are rooms for seniors. From the second to third floor there are rooms for seniors, doctor, nursing facilities, meeting rooms and dining rooms. The theoretical part deals with the issue of the occurrence of Legionell. The calculation and project part solves the sewerage, water supply and gas distribution in the given building.

The impact of privatization of water system towards the poor. A challenge to pastoral care with special reference to the rural communities of Bushbuckridge

The dissertation focuses on water, which has become the focal point of global debate today among nations. This is due to ever-increasing population and the insatiable consumer demands that the market makes on humanity, putting heavy stress on natural resources, especially water. Since the 1980s, rich countries and the institutions they control, i.e. the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank (WB) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) have been forcing poor countries to implement policies and sign agreements that do them more harm than good (i.e. privatization of state assets such as water). The debt crisis drove many poor countries into structural adjustment programs as a condition for receiving IMF and World Bank aid. These programs, under various names, contain policies that compel vulnerable countries to expose their social services to competition with big profit making corporations. Through persuasion, threats, bullying and conditions attached to loans and aid, poor countries have been forced to: <ul> <li>Open their markets in order to subsidize exports from rich countries.</li> <li>Stop prioritising domestic producers.</li> <li>Divert development efforts away from local food markets, and</li> <li>Privatize essential services such as water system, electricity etc.</li></ul> These debt relief conditions and trade agreements are focused solely on making profit and not on improving the livelihood and welfare of the poor. The theory that the World Bank, the IMF and the WTO put forward is that increased trade will automatically be equal to improved welfare. This equality has not worked in practice as Raj Patel in a more or harsher description, that structural adjustment and other trade related policies could also be seen as a “weapon of mass destruction” (Znet, November 28, 2000). The author concurs with Patel’s view, as according to UNICEF, over 500,000 children under the age of five died each year in Africa and Latin America in the late 1980s as a direct result of the debt crisis and its management under the International Monetary Fund’s structural adjustments programs. These programs required the abolition of price supports on essential food-stuffs, steed reductions in spending on health, education, and other social services, and increases in taxes. The debt crisis has never been resolved for much of Sub-Saharan Africa. Extrapolating from the UNICEF data, as many as 5,000,000 children and vulnerable adults may have lost their lives in this blighted continent as a result of the debt crunch (World Policy Journal, Volume XIX, No.4, Winter 2002/03). Privatization and commodification of water system is the order of the day in many developing countries. It has raised survival issues for the poor and the marginalized, causing problems such as scarcity of safe drinking water, pollution of water and soil, and destruction of agricultural sectors in other parts of developing countries. This dissertation emphasizes that all people have internationally accepted rights to water “all peoples, whatever their stage of development and their social and economic conditions, have the right to have access to drinking water in quantities and of a quality equal to their basic needs” (United Nations 1977). This right is being violated for millions of people around the globe, particularly in developing countries such as Africa, Asia and Latin America. This dissertation reminds the church leadership, members of faith communities and all relevant stakeholders of their responsibilities to God-given gift of water. Both the Old and New Testament understanding of justice as taking the side of the poor and oppressed, and also seeking to compel us to action, i.e. to address the exploitative and oppressive systems that seek to hold the poor and their oppressive structures. We are inspired to strive for justice, each in our own place and according to our separate gifts. We are called to the struggle to make trade a means of sharing the bounty of the earth and the fruits of human labor, and to ensure that people’s rights to water is fully respected. The dissertation emphasizes that “water” is the source of life, a gift of nature and that it belongs to all living beings and the rest of creation. God who is the creator gives this right to everyone. Sustainable Stormwater Handling and Water System Urban Design. : A literature review and a case study in Nacka, Sweden.

Climate change presents us with greater and greater challenges and stormwater is an important part of our future water problems. In some parts of the world the increase and intensification in precipitation causes strain on existing infrastructure while, in others, draughts are becoming more and more severe. Handling stormwater sustainably does not only gain the environment by controlling pollutant spreading, helping with flooding control and water reuse but can also have added values in urban areas if included in urban planning. Implementing green infrastructure and sustainable stormwater solutions creates jobs and are in many countries seen as the future way of handling stormwater. There are many different techniques and ways of adopting sustainable stormwater handling depending on the local problem and physical as well as economic conditions. Together they all have in common of creating added values when implemented. Increased biodiversity, improved air quality, reduced noise, improved growing conditions for urban trees and aesthetical values that have a positive effect on human health are just some of the positive added values of sustainable stormwater handling. The case study in this report concerns a new development on a peninsula in the municipality on Nacka, Stockholm. The recommendation is to adopt the approach of many small solutions that combines to a sustainable way of handling stormwater that not only solves the problem but creates added values in the living and working area. Stormwater is a resource that should be used as one in order to have sustainable urban planning.

As the global climate gets warmer, local extreme weather becomes more frequent, and it becomes more and more difficult to accurately predict the occurrence of extreme rainfall. At the same time, the threat and destructiveness of stormwater weather to urban water systems and cities are also increasing due to the continuous advancement of urbanization, the continuous gathering of urban population and the increasingly obvious urban heat island effect.Since it was first proposed, resilience thinking has become a very important idea in urban planning and research. With the continuous development of resilience thinking, its concept and connotation are also constantly improved and developed. It has developed from a single state of resilience at the beginning to cover all aspects of social, economic and ecological issues.This research aims to find the resilience level of the urban water system of Rotterdam, and find some typical cases of Rotterdam’s experience for other cities to learn. Based on the resilience thinking, this study takes Rotterdam as an example to comprehensively evaluate the resilience of the urban water system under stormwater disaster and urban flood and waterlogging. The first part of this thesis first introduces the urban water system, resilience thinking and other concept which this thesis use. In the second part, this thesis mainly introduced the specific analytical method and analytical framework, namely ASPIRE model. The third part will combine the analysis model with the example of Rotterdam, and comprehensively analyze the stormwater adaptive resilience of the urban water system. In the fourth part of this thesis, three engineering examples of Rotterdam which worthy of promotion and learning are introduced and summarized in detail. The last part of this thesis is the discussion and conclusion. Through this study, it is found that the urban water system of Rotterdam has high stormwater adaptive resilience and Rotterdam has many successful experiences which can be learned by other cities.
