A presente pesquisa busca respostas para a seguinte questão central: como ocorreu a implantação, o estabelecimento e a disseminação dos clubes náuticos e aquáticos no Rio Grande do Sul, no longo século XIX. O corpus documental da pesquisa foi composto, principalmente, por jornais oriundos das cidades de Pelotas, Porto Alegre e Rio Grande, onde se localizou os primeiros vestígios das práticas náuticas e aquáticas no Rio Grande do Sul. O processamento das fontes históricas foi realizado por meio do software de análise qualitativa dos dados ATLAS.ti 7.5.6. As fontes interpretadas, por meio do cruzamento do referencial teórico, da revisão bibliográfica e das fontes inventariadas, revelaram que as cidades portuárias do estado foram os principais espaços para a emergência das associações esportivas náuticas e aquáticas. As trocas culturais entre os imigrantes e descendentes geraram o estabelecimento e a disseminação das associações esportivas, bem como impulsionaram a difusão dos esportes náuticos e aquáticos no Rio Grande do Sul. Nas cidades de Pelotas, Porto Alegre e Rio Grande, tais práticas sofreram um processo de esportivização e, juntamente com a congregação de elementos de diversas culturas, mais tarde se disseminaram para outras cidades sul-rio-grandenses. / This research seeks to answer one central question: how did the implementation, establishment and the dissemination of nautical and aquatic sport clubs in Rio Grande do Sul occur throughout the nineteenth century? The documentary research corpus was composed mainly of newspapers from Pelotas, Porto Alegre and Rio Grande, which is where the first traces of nautical and aquatic practices can be found in Rio Grande do Sul. The processing of historical sources was carried out by using the qualitative data analysis software ATLAS.ti 7.5.6. The sources were interpreted by cross-referencing the theoretical foundation, the literature review and inventoried sources which revealed that the state´s port cities were the main locations for the emergence of nautical and aquatic sports associations. Cultural exchange programs between immigrants and descendants generated the establishment and dissemination of sports associations, as well as boosting the diffusion of nautical and aquatic sports in Rio Grande do Sul. In Pelotas, Porto Alegre and Rio Grande, such practices have undergone a process of sportization together with the fusion of diverse cultures, which later spread to other cities in Rio Grande do Sul.

In the game of water polo, it is generally accepted that the shooting position of the offensive player and the tactic employed are both important in generating goals. Despite their importance, little is known about the relationship between shooting position and offensive tactics and their impact on the probability of goal scoring. In this research, a sequence of hierarchical mixed logistic regression models is applied to a unique data set from 2016 and 2017 NCAA men’s water polo seasons to analyze the relationship between goal generating tactics and different shooting positions. The primary result reveals that the closer a player is the “midline” of the pool and the closer a player is to the goal, the higher the percentage of scoring by offensive tactic. Furthermore, statistically significant relationships reveal (i) direct shots are better than perimeter shots, (ii) left-handed shooters are more efficient at scoring goals that right-handed shooters, and (iii) counterattack opportunities are better than power plays (player advantage). Understanding the best goal-scoring positions in the pool for each offensive tactic will assist coaches and players in devising more successful offensive and defensive strategies.
