Web Application Development by Nonprogrammers: User-Centered Design of an End-User Web Development Tool

Rode, Jochen 21 July 2005 (has links)
This work investigates entry barriers and approaches for facilitating end-user web application development with the particular focus on shaping web programming technology and tools according to end-users' expectations and natural mental models. My underlying assumption and motivation is that given the right tools and techniques even nonprogrammers may become successful web application developers. The main target audience for this research are "casual" webmasters without programming experience - a group likely to be interested in building web applications. As an important subset of web applications I focus on supporting the development of basic data collection, storage and retrieval applications such as online registrations forms, staff databases, or report tools. First I analyze the factors contributing to the complexity of web application development through surveys and interviews of experienced programmers; then I explore the "natural mental models" of potential end-user web developers, and finally discuss my particular design solutions for lowering entry barriers, as embodied by a proof-of-concept development tool, called Click. Furthermore, I introduce and evaluate the concept of "Design-at-Runtime" - a new technique for facilitating and accelerating the development-test cycle when building web-based applications. / Ph. D.

WeTS - Web Technology Selection Guidelines

Shao, Weiyan, Zhu, Chu January 2015 (has links)
Web development is receiving increasing attention among all kinds and sizes of companies. Web presentation has become a hygiene factor for companies nowadays. Fortunately, nowadays web developers can choose from a great number of ready-made technologies instead of developing everything from scratch. However, web development technologies have evolved much in the past 20 years. Due to the increased complexity and diversity of the alternatives, it is getting more and more difficult for companies to make an overall good choice of technologies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that usually do not have resources to make a thorough research before choosing. This thesis creates WeTS - Web Technology Stack Guidelines, which contains three parts: process, algorithm and software quality characteristics. By following WeTS, inexperienced web developers, especially in SMEs, can select web technology stacks in an optimal way. Meanwhile, WeTS could be used for experienced practitioners and researchers as a reference to have an overview about modern web development technologies. Based on WeTS Guidelines, this thesis evaluated a number of technology stacks. Then a case study was performed with a startup company named Sqore. By comparing WeTS with Sqore’s technology selection process step by step, this thesis evaluated WeTS Guidelines.

Reverse Engineering End-user Developed Web Applications into a Model-based Framework

Bhardwaj, Yogita 16 June 2005 (has links)
The main goal of this research is to facilitate end-user and expert developer collaboration in the creation of a web application. This research created a reverse engineering toolset and integrated it with Click (Component-based Lightweight Internet-application Construction Kit), an end-user web development tool. The toolset generates artifacts to facilitate collaboration between end-users and expert web developers when the end-users need to go beyond the limited capabilities of Click. By supporting smooth transition of workflow to expert web developers, we can help them in implementing advanced functionality in end-user developed web applications. The four artifacts generated include a sitemap, text documentation, a task model, and a canonical representation of the user interface. The sitemap is automatically generated to support the workflow of web developers. The text documentation of a web application is generated to document data representation and business logic. A task model, expressed using ConcurTaskTrees notation, covers the whole interaction specified by the end-user. A presentation and dialog model, represented in User Interface Markup Language (UIML), describe the user interface in a declarative language. The task model and UIML representation are created to support development of multi-platform user interfaces from an end-user web application. A formative evaluation of the usability of these models and representations with experienced web developers revealed that these representations were useful and easy to understand. / Master of Science

Extending Web Application Development to the User-Editable Space

Goodrich, Brian S. 12 March 2008 (has links) (PDF)
The growth of the web increased dramatically when users were provided with applications that let them use just their browser to post and edit content on the World Wide Web. Offering users the ability to use their browser to create their own web applications, instead of just posting text and images, would cause another Internet evolution. This thesis describes the EXPPO system (Extensible Page Productions and Operations), a web application development environment for both end-users and technical-users. EXPPO leverages the end-user's previous experience with internet browsers by using a page based development experience or a Page Oriented Architecture. Because applications are structured in this architecture, components used in one application can be re-used by another, providing end-users with functionality that was created by more technical users. This thesis demonstrates how the EXPPO development environment can be used to create functionally rich web applications.

Καρούσος, Νίκος 24 January 2012 (has links)
Although hypertext is considered as a widely accepted mean for information structuring, the provision of hypertext-related services has not yet reached a satisfactory level. Both the design principles of hypertext systems and the lack of developer support for the exploitation of hypermedia services lead to a low level of provision of the hypertext functionality from the world. This problem has highlighted the need for re-approaching the design principles of HSs under a different perspective in which the creation and the provision of a hypermedia service are crucial issues. This thesis focuses on the development of a framework aiming at both the provision of hypermedia service and the web application development support using hypermedia functionality. The adoption of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) in the design of Hypermedia Systems (OHS) constitutes the main approach against the particular issue. The SOA based implementation of HSs together with the the provision of hypermedia services to the Internet through universal standards try to aid the exploitation of the hypermedia functionality from an open set of both users and systems. The OHSs together with the Component Based – OHSs (CB-OHSs) like Callimachus were the leading paradigm in this approach in which the web-service technique was both studied and adopted in order to provide to the Internet hypermedia services based on different hypermedia fields (taxonomic, spatial, navigational etc) provided by existing systems. The case study of this approach regards the Babylon system. It is a hypertext system designed to provide taxonomic services in the context of the entire Callimachus system as a single component. The Babylon system was later transformed to a taxonomic internet based service using the Web Service standards. Furthermore, a collaboration and decision making support tool based on spatial and argumentation support technologies was also implemented. The development was entirely based on SOA thus the provided services are available both from users or applications of the world wide web and 3rd party (external) applications by using the Web Services protocols. Finally, a study which concerns capabilities of discovering and searching of the hypermedia services has also taken place. The evaluation of the proposed approach extracted many positive conclusions regarding the utilization of SOA in the area of hypermedia systems.
