Breathing Life Into Webcomics : Pay AttentionLarsson, Pernilla January 2018 (has links)
This work explored the potential issues concerning attention when adding animation to a webcomic. The aim of the research has been to quantify reader reactions to a comic with animated elements to investigate potential gain or loss from the new format. The research question is formulated with regards to the specific issues of attention and distraction that movement poses on a reader’s ability to focus on the narrative content. A prototype comic tested the guidelines discovered in the background with regards to how animation should work in comics. The results shows that with the guidelines participation reaction becomes more predictable. The prototype was tested on a small group of participants, and the results show that while animations do distract they do not necessarily negatively impact reader experience. The conclusion is that animation within comics has the potential to further the media expression and that is worthy of further study.

Previous issue date: 2011-12-21 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The comic strip is an opinionative journalistic genre consolidated within the pages of newspapers and magazines. However, the web has allowed the possibility of a new space of creation and placement of this genus, forcing it to adapt to the evolution of digital media. The media convergence, according to Jenkins (2008), explores the possibilities of convergence of devices and media content production as a cultural transformation, as Internet users are encouraged to seek new ways to communicate. The strips, printed productions commonly found in blogs an appropriate space for its dissemination, mainly because they allow us to undertake activities, opinionated, free of censorship and copyright character. Through the studies by Bakhtin (2000) in relation to speech genres, this paper aims to propose a discussion regarding the naming of the comic genre when they are designed exclusively for digital media by adding multimedia features available on the web as did McCloud (2006) and Franco (2004) in relation to comics. To support these goals, a survey was conducted in 104 blogs that had strips in their content, noting that the main types of multimedia and resources used for these crops. The process of creating the Internet has turned into something simple and fun. We're finding new ways to develop already established genres, taking advantage of the gaps left by the content production industry. The web is a place of experimentation and innovation, a space created by the users and the example of these strips are creating new possibilities in digital media and broadcasting.

Comics Journalism (CJ) is a relatively recent way of reporting news, though it has its own tradi-tions and configuration. The Internet expands the possibilities of production and publication for CJ works, so that in virtual media these initiatives tend to multiply. This research aims to identi-fy and analyze the defining elements of online Comics Journalism through the Cartoon Move-ment (CM) website. CM is an international, independent and collaborative platform for the pub-lication of political cartoons and comics journalism. In order to better capture the website as a whole, our analysis is divided into three stages: the institutional, the commercial and the editori-al. The two first stages deal with the main sections of the site, Home, Newsroom, Cartoons, Comics and Projects; for the third one, we apply content analysis to the comics reports pub-lished on the website. Our findings indicate that the main characteristics observed in our object – independence, promotion of journalistic values, diversity of voices, collaborative prodution and internationalization – are only possible thanks to the interdependent relation between the editorial, the institutional and the commercial aspects in the organization of the website.

Comics About Organs: Social Support and Graphic Medicine in The Awkward YetiGibb, Jacob 12 April 2024 (has links) (PDF)
Comic strips have always been a medium for more than humor. Many comic strips published on social media sites address mental health issues. Despite their popularity, the field of graphic medicine, which examines the intersection of health care and comics, has seen little to no examination of how these comics function on social media. Utilizing the popular comic The Awkward Yeti, this research examines how the rhetorical devices of comics make them an ideal medium for communicating about mental health issues and providing social support to social media users. This study conducts a content analysis of 15 Instagram posts from The Awkward Yeti. Employing a modified version of Cuatrona & Suhr's Social Support Behavior Code (SSBC), three dimensions of social support were measured: information support, emotional support, and network support. The results revealed emotional support and network support to be the most frequently utilized dimensions of social support found in comments on The Awkward Yeti's posts. Additionally, the results suggest that for comics to be effective as a means of social support and mental health education on social media, they must be grounded in authentic experiences and should provoke emotional responses from social media users.
