Community work as practised by the Valley Trust

Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Masters of Arts in the Department of Social Work University of Zululand, South Africa, 1977. / The purpose of this study is to analyze and evaluate the approach to the practice of community work in a newly developing rural community. The Valley Trust, a social welfare organisation engaged in a health promotion scheme in a rural community is used for the purpose of the analysis and*evaluation. The study report consists of nine chapters which will be briefly discussed as follows : Chapter 1 : This is an introductory chapter which deals with the following aspects, viz.: motivation; objectives; method; and limitations of the study together with the method of presentation of the report. Chapter Z : In this chapter the community concept is discussed. Attention is paid to the analysis of the community concept, the rural community, and the characteristics of the rural community. Chapter 3 : Chapter 3 gives a detailed discussion of the key terms that are used in community work. These are : community organisation, community development and community work. Chapter 4 : This chapter deals with social work and its role in the newly developing communities. Particular aspects to which attention has been given are : the nature of social work; the focus and the contribution of social work activities in the newly developing communities; the role of the social worker; and the equipment of a social worker for rural community work in the newly developing communities. Chapter 5 : Chapter 5 gives attention to aspects of particular importance to social change. These aspects are : the prerequisites for building a community work programme; the.factors associated with the social needs and problems among the newly developing communities; planned social change and the role of the agent of change; and certain principles and factors to be taken into account by an agency involved in community work. Chapter 6 : In this chapter attention is given to an analysis of the community of' the Nyuswa Reserve. In this analysis points of particular importance are : the description of the Nyuswa Reserve and its inhabitants; the economic aspects of the people; the labour aspects; the educational aspects; social welfare services; communication means; and the tribal council as a unit of local authority. Chapter 7 : Chapter 7 deals with The Valley Trust, the social welfare agency involved in community work. Attention is given to the historical survey and the objectives of The Valley Trust. Further discussion covers the membership of the Association; the Management and administration of The Valley Trust; personnel and finances. Chapter 8 : This chapter gives attention to community work as practised by The Valley Trust. The discussion also covers the nature and range of services provided by The Valley Trust; the influence of the work of The Valley Trust; the evaluative remarks on the services of The Valley Trust. Lagen (1993:387) om stöd och service till vissa funktionshindrade, LSS, är den svenska lag som skall tillförsäkra samhällsmedborgare med vissa specificerade funktionsnedsättningar stöd och service i syfte att uppnå goda levnadsvillkor och ges möjligheten att få leva som alla andra samhällsmedborgare genom delaktighet i utformandet av sitt egna liv. Det sker varje år en ökning i antal beviljade insatser utifrån lagen och år 2015 var det 117 200 st beviljade och verkställda LSS-insatser genomförda det året. Tidigare forskning belyser problematiska omständigheter gällande såväl geografiska som bedömningsskillnader i såväl utformande som bedömning av rätt till insatserna. Syftet med den här studien är att analysera hur offentliga dokument på tre nivåer i samhället konstruerar och reproducerar bärande begrepp och benämningar inom LSS (1993:387). Metoden för genomförandet är en kritisk diskursanalys av sex normerande texter i bedömning och utformandet av insatserna för att synliggöra vilka diskurser som används i skapandet av innehållet. Resultatet har analyserats utifrån en egenkonstruerad analysmodell utifrån Faircloughs tredimensionella analysmodell och domänteoretiska tankar. Resultatet tyder på att det finns flera nivåer i skapandet och reproduceringen av begreppsinnehållet och analysen innehåller tre huvuddiskurser som kan utläsas i materialet: diskursen av goda levnadsvillkor, få leva som alla andra och delaktighet. Detta exemplifieras och diskuteras i analys- och resultatkapitlet och studien avslutas med en slutdiskussion kring studiens upptäckter. / LSS (1993:387) the Act Concerning Support and Service for Persons with Certain Functional Impairments is the Swedish law to assure citizens with certain specified disabilities support and service in order to achieve good living conditions and be given the opportunity to live like any other citizen. Every year there is an increase in the number of approved actions of support under the Act. In year 2015 117 200 actions of support were granted and executed under the Act. Previous research highlights the problematic circumstances concerning geographical as well as differences in assessing the right to support from the Act. The purpose of this study is to analyze how public documents on three levels in society constructs and reproduces the guiding concepts and terms in the LSS (1993: 387). The method of implementation is a critical discourse analysis of six normative texts in the evaluation and design of efforts to visible the discourses used in the creation of the content. The results are analyzed on the basis of a self-constructed analysis model based of Faircloughs three dimensional analytic model and domain theoretical thoughts. The results suggest that there are three levels in the creation and reproduction of concepts and content analysis contains three main discourses that can be seen in the material: the discourse of good living, to live like everyone else and participation. This is exemplified in the discussion of the analysis and the results chapter and the study concludes with a final discussion on the study's findings.

Detectamos que a Fundação, nesse programa, faz parcerias e que, portanto, adota o modelo destas. Descrevemos e analisamos o(s) modelo(s) das parcerias em seus aspectos curriculares e prático-pedagógico para saber se tal modelo está acompanhando as mudanças que estão ocorrendo no mundo do trabalho e se o ensino está sendo significativo para a construção da cidadania dos adolescentes "em situação de risco social". Para a realização desta pesquisa utilizou-se a metodologia qualitativa do tipo Estudo de Caso e como técnicas de coletas de dados, a observação não-participante nas instituições parceiras da FUNDAC, a entrevista semi -estruturada com os adolescentes, educadores, coordenadores, instrutores e supervisores de oficina e o questionário com os adolescentes. A análise e interpretação dos dados à luz dos referenciais teóricos da sociologia do trabalho, trabalho e educação, didática. Ao colocar o problema da pesquisa, fez-se uma fundamentação teórica sobre o atual mundo do trabalho capitalista que tem colocado para o Estado e a escola novas determinações em termo de educação profissional e assistência social. Levantou-se a história das crianças e adolescentes marginalizados que recebiam assistência social e de educação profissional nas instituições governamentais e religiosas no Brasil do século XVIII. Os resultados mostraram que o modelo de educação profissional das parcerias é aquele concebido no século XVIII pelas instituições de caridade que assistiam ao "menor" "carente", "abandonado", "marginalizado", "órfão". É o modelo baseado no ensino de ofícios manufatureiros, desvinculado do atual mundo do trabalho em que se pede a adoção do modelo das competências qualificatórias em que o currículo deve ser polivalente para desenvolver as habilidades e capacidades necessárias ao trabalho contemporâneo. Quanto à construção da cidadania destes meninos(as) as entrevistas com os egressos sobre as suas atuais condições de vida mostraram que para os oito entrevistados o ensino e a Fundação não foram significativos por se encontrarem ainda numa condição marginal na sociedade. E apesar destas constatações os dados indicaram que os adolescentes valorizam tanto a educação que recebem como a instituição FUNDAC e dão um significado muito próprio à educação profissional ao considerá-los como meio de sobrevivência, resgate da cidadania e futuro menos marginalizado. / Salvador

The researcher undertook exploratory research to see whether characteristics of visionary organizations, as discovered in research undertaken by Collins and Porras (2000), are present and applicable to non-profit organizations in Gauteng, South Africa. The characteristics are: - a core ideology (core purpose and core values) - big hairy audacious goals - a cult-like culture - purposeful evolution and continuous self improvement - management continuity - alignment. A schedule was used to interview directors of ten non-profit organizations. Some staff in each organization were given a questionnaire to see whether their answers correlated with the director responses. The research indicated that most characteristics are present, to some degree, in the non-profit organizations. These characteristics could however be explored more thoroughly in further research.
