Investigating a transdisciplinary collaborative service delivery approach in addressing learners experiencing barriers to learningWehmeyer, Welma 11 1900 (has links)
Learners experiencing barriers to learning often require intervention and support from multiple professionals with different areas of expertise. Collaboration between professionals is important in avoiding fragmented and incoherent service delivery. Transdisciplinary service delivery allows for maximum integration among the various role players. Disciplinary boundaries are transcended through a process of skills transference and sharing of roles and provide child-centred, coordinated and collaborative support. This study investigates professionals in the Western Cape’s perceptions of a transdisciplinary service delivery approach for supporting learners experiencing barriers to learning.
A sequential mixed method approach was utilized to gain an in depth understanding of professionals’ perceptions. Data were collected in two phases. During the first phase, a quantitative questionnaire was sent to various professional categories in the Western Cape who are expected to provide services to learners experiencing barriers to learning. The aim of the quantitative study was to provide background information for the second phase in which professionals’ perceptions of a transdisciplinary approach for supporting learners experiencing barriers to learning were obtained through eight focus group discussions. Four focus groups consisted of professionals who had not previously been exposed to a transdisciplinary approach. These professionals attended a two hour informative workshop on a transdisciplinary service delivery approach prior to the focus group. The remaining four focus groups consisted of professionals who had previously been exposed to transdisciplinary service delivery. Data were systematically analysed through a hybrid process of inductive and deductive analysis.
Findings indicate that professionals providing services to learners experiencing barriers to learning perceive a transdisciplinary approach as useful and much needed for services provided both in schools and in private practice. Certain aspects of the transdisciplinary approach are perceived as more or less valuable, depending on the context and specific category of learning barrier. Although professionals acknowledge all aspects of the approach as valuable, multiskilling and role release are viewed as most needed. The transference of skills among therapists, teachers, parents and caregivers is perceived to contribute to effective and feasible service delivery. / Psychology of Education / D. Ed. A case-based analysis of the implementation of transformation in Western Cape rugbyCupido, Evan Dean 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Rugby in South Africa has a long racial and political history. This history was a direct result
of the policy of apartheid in which a deliberate attempt was made to arrange all areas of life
along racial lines. One saw rugby being played and administered on the basis of race in which
disparities between races became apparent. Twenty years into democracy and one has seen
transformation in South African sport been increasingly prioritized by national government in
which numerous policies have been developed to bring about redress and equity in sport. The
South African Rugby Union (SARU) and Provincial Rugby Unions in their attempt to
transform rugby have implemented numerous strategic plans to ensure greater access to the
game in historically disadvantaged areas. Yet despite the efforts of both state and non-state
actors rugby at a senior national and provincial level is still dominated by white players even
though the majority of rugby players at a junior level are non-white.
The research focused on how transformation policies in rugby have been implemented in the
Western Cape. The research design was a case study, in which the author conducted a
number of interviews with rugby administrators and managers, both past and present,
involved at the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU). The objectives of the
research was to look at what implementation initiatives have been put in place, both on and
off the field, to bring about transformation of rugby in the Western Cape. The case study
focused on rugby played at an intermediate level in which rugby institutions, school rugby
and recruitment and club rugby in the Western Cape were explored. The research focused on
how transformation policies have been implemented by those involved with rugby at a
provincial and local level. Implementation of transformation policies in rugby was seen as a
dynamic and complex process in which both state and non-state actors played an important
role. Thus the theoretical approach of the research was a bottom-up approach to public policy
implementation.
The findings showed that while there was no strict enforcement of a quota on teams at the
intermediate level the WPRFU have carried out a number of implementation initiatives in
which transformation has been advanced. This is particularly true of transformation off the
field in which employment equity and preferential procurement of the Union’s broader
administrative structure has been advanced. Yet findings into school and club level rugby
showed that there still existed great social and economic disparities between historically
advantaged and disadvantaged groups. Thus the goal of achieving equity and access in rugby
has yet to be reached at these levels. The research highlighted that transformation at a senior professional level will remain a challenge as rugby cannot escape the socioeconomic context
in which it is embedded in. Therefore increase focus needs to be placed on transforming
rugby at school and club level in which disadvantaged groups need to be assisted so as to
ensure that rugby is played on a level playing field.
pogings deur regerings- sowel as nieregeringsrolspelers oorheers blanke spelers steeds rugby
Provinsie Rugby Voetbalunie (WPRVU) betrokke is of was.
Wes-Kaap is ondersoek.
regerings- sowel as nieregeringsrolspelers ’n belangrike invloed het.

Openbare sektor-privaatsektor vennootskappe as 'n eiendomsontwikkeling-metodiek in die Wes-Kaap ProvinsieBeyers, Amelia Adeline 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: It is estimated that at present South Africa has a backlog in spending on infrastructure,
amounting to R170 billion. The state does not have the necessary funds to rectify the
situation. This problem is not unique to South Africa and across the world countries are
considering whether private sector enterprises should not be rendering the services and
constructing the infrastructure which the state had traditionally done. One of the most
successful ways of doing this is to make use of public-private partnerships (PPP's). A PPP
is a joint effort by the state and the private sector party to execute a major product, whereby
the resources and abilities of the two parties are combined. The risks and responsibilities of
the project are allocated to the parties in an optimal manner.
The efficient and effective application of the PPP mechanism poses a challenge to the
Western Cape Province as it is an excellent way to improve the utilisation of state property
within the Province and construct new facilities. The Elsenburg vineyard and cellar project,
a PPP project in the Western Cape Province, is therefore critically assessed in terms of key
success factors in the implementation of PPP's.
Furthermore recommendations regarding the future utilisation of PPP's within the Province
are made. A dedicated PPP unit, which will be responsible for investigating the value for
money, affordability, allocation of risks and recourse requirements of projects, should be
formed within the Province. Members of the unit will also handle the management of PPP
projects. It is important that officials who will be involved with PPP's are trained in the
theory and practise thereof. Other important aspects are that all groups who have an interest
in a PPP project be identified, that attempts are not made to transfer all risks to the private
sector partner and that the standardisation of steps that are common to all projects be
investigated.
Property projects that are suitable for the application of PPP's must be identified as it can
provide momentum to the economy of the Western Cape and can also contribute towards
the erasing of the backlog in the construction and maintenance of infrastructure.

Benchmarking financial ratios for small, medium and large lithographic commercial printing firms situated in the Western CapeBurger, Rudi Alois 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The majority of small and medium - and to a much lesser extent the large -
commercial lithographic printing firms situated in the Western Cape do not employ a
fulltime financial director or an accountant. The result is that many managers - very
often without much financial training - have to steer their firm through very turbulent
economic times. Apart from being in this state of siege, managers of these
commercial printing firms have their problem compounded by the fact that they do
not have any industry-specific financial benchmarks against which to evaluate their
firms' financial performance.
Against this background, the writer has set out to determine certain industry financial
benchmarks - presented in the form of ratios - for the commercial lithographic
printing firms situated in the Western Cape to enable participating firms to measure
their performance relative to their sector peers.
As such, this study is aimed at the non-financial manager, firstly, and thereafter the
financial manager. To this end an attempt has been made to keep the vocabulary as
user-friendly as possible without sacrificing brevity and clarity. Lastly, this study is
presented as a working document rather than a theoretical exercise.
The essence of this study - to create a tool for financial evaluation - could be
embodied as follows: Turnover is vanity,
profit is sanity,
cash flow is reality.
finansiële direkteur of rekenmeester in diens nie. Dit gee daartoe aanleiding dat
verskeie bestuurders - dikwels sonder noemenswaardige finansiële opleiding - hul
firma deur 'n baie onstuimige ekonomiese omgewing moet stuur. Buiten hierdie
Omset is ydelheid,
wins is redelikheid,
kontantvloei is werklikheid.

Thesis (M.Mus)--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: For many decades music has been recognised as a medium for therapy. The reasons put forward include the ability of music to inspire people, to motivate, to integrate and to promote relaxation. A strong link exists between human beings and music and this can unite people from different cultures. Music is readily available everywhere. People can attend music concerts or be part of a choir or orchestra. Music is even available in homes at the press of a button.
Music therapy is a fairly new concept in which music and psychology are combined. For many years people have used music for healing. It is because music has produced such positive results in problem cases that it is being used in therapy sessions to contribute to the healing process. Although many people have an understanding of what music therapy entails, there are also those with no idea of what it entails.
This thesis is an in-depth investigation into music therapy and the possible functional outcomes thereof. The focus is on the music therapist, characteristics that the music therapist should possess, how and why music is used as medium in the therapy process, different methods of therapy and the influence thereof on problems.
The position of music therapy in the Western Cape was investigated. To arrive at a reliable conclusion in this regard, people who work with music therapy have been involved. Interviews were held with qualified and non-qualified persons who practice some form of music therapy in the Western Cape. Information from these interviews is interpreted, conveyed and recommendations are made as to the advancement of music therapy in the Western Cape.
The purpose of the investigation is to publish information regarding music therapy and the meaning thereof. The larger public must be made aware of the complementary role music therapy can play in the healing process. Eventually music therapy should take its place in health care in the Western Cape, together with other branches of the medical profession such as psychology and career therapy.

An evaluation of health care of prisoners at selected institutions : a nursing perspectiveSontyale, Ulungile Klaas January 2005 (has links)
Thesis (MCur) -- University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A non-experimental descriptive study was conducted in four prisons in the
Western Cape. The research focussed on the standard of care within primary
health care settings in the purposively selected prisons. No official written
standards existed to measure the quality of care. After an in-depth literature
study, structure, process and outcome standards were formulated and validated.
The main findings of the study indicated that:
• Standards in these three dimensions of care did not meet the pre-set level
of performance as determined by the researcher;
• The clients were generally satisfied with the hygiene in the clinics;
• Aspects of concern were the lack of explanation offered to the clients
before and after consultations and nursing care interventions.
The researcher recommends the implementation of a comprehensive quality
care model for the health care of the prisoners with adequate human and nonhuman
resources
Core words: Qualtiy care, Correctional services health care, Nursing care in

Thesis (MCur)--Stellenbosch University, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Against the background of the approach to make the follow up care to oncology
patients more accessible and with the emphasis on quality care, it was indicated
that this service needs to be evaluated.
A study based on a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods (also
called triangulation) was conducted to formulate structure, process and outcome
standards for a comprehensive follow up care for the oncology patients and to
evaluate this service according these standards.
The most important results are:
• The quality of care relating to the structure standards was optimal
regarding the organization of the patient's visits, follow up treatment and
referrals. A suboptimal standard was found regarding the general
management system.
• In the process standards focusing on the physical and psychosocial needs
of the patient, a suboptimal standard was found regarding all aspects.
Nursing practice leading to subobtimal care of patients is a major cause
for concern.
• With the outcome standards reflecting in patient satisfaction, positive as
well as negative opinions and perceptions were found.
Recommendations include:
• Upgrading of management systems
• Empowerment of the nurses with knowledge and scientific competencies
• Attention to the opinions and perceptions of the patients to completely
involve the patient in the service and treatment process.
Keywords: Oncology follow up service I formulation of structure, process and
outcome standards.
Aanbevelings sluit in:

Participation in meaningful occupation : how do young adults living with cerebral palsy experience the quality of their participation?Pieterse, Gisele Shaline 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MOccTher)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Participation in meaningful occupations is what defines us as human beings and is an important
indicator of health and well-being. It is the way we experience the world around us and is closely
linked to quality of life. As an occupational therapist at a school for learners with special
educational needs, the researcher was interested in how young adults with a diagnosis of Cerebral
Palsy (CP) who attended this school, experience their participation or the lack thereof in
occupations and if it contributes to meaning and fulfilment in their lives? She established through
informal conversation with some of these young adults or their parents, that they experience
unemployment, unhappiness and poor integration within the community. The aim of this study was
therefore to describe how young adults living with CP in economically disadvantaged communities
within the Western Cape, experience the quality of their participation in meaningful occupations.
A qualitative phenomenological study design was used, enabling the researcher to explore the
value and meaning participants attach to different occupations, the participants perceptions of their
experience and the factors impacting on their participation. The study population was young adults
between the ages of 18-28 years with a diagnosis of CP, who attended the previously mentioned
school and who exited school over the duration of the past nine years. The researcher used
purposive maximum variation sampling, to ensure variation in terms of diagnosis, living
arrangements, employment and marital status. Data collection took the form of ten face-to-face
semi-structured individual interviews and inductive content analysis was utilized to analyse data.
The following four themes emerged from the data: overcoming challenges; having equal
opportunities; barriers holding me back and the future is mine to shape. These young adults
participated in a variety of meaningful occupations and have learned to utilize various strategies to
overcome the difficulties they faced in this process. The following factors influenced their
participation positively: having meaningful relationships; accepting their disability and nurturing a
positive attitude; being proud of their achievements; positive work experiences and involvement in
the community. Factors contributing to these young adults not experiencing meaningful
participation were the following: their perception of themselves and also how they perceived being
treated by others; non-acceptance of their physical circumstances and disability; incompetence
and poor self-confidence; termination of previously meaningful occupations; challenges with
interpersonal relationships and unsatisfactory work experiences. The need to be as independent
as possible was of utmost importance to all these young adults, as it was an indicator of being in
control of their own lives. Given the above information, the researcher recommends a transition
preparation program for senior phase learners that will include sessions on work habits, social
skills, transportation, self-employment and integration into the community to be implemented at the
school. Supported employment options should be explored as well to ensure maximum
employment among these learners exiting school. A follow-up system should be established to
evaluate the effectiveness of the above-mentioned program.

Tydens haar werk as ‘n arbeidsterpeut by ‘n skool vir
ongelukkig, werkloos and swak geïntegreed in hulle gemeenskap is.

temas het na vore gekom naamlik: om uitdagings te oorkom; om gelyke geleenthede te hê;

Paediatric and neonatal admissions to an intensive care unit at a regional hospital in the Western CapeKruger, Irma 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MMed)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Objective:
The aim of the study was to determine the outcome of critically ill neonates and children
admitted to a general intensive care unit in a large regional hospital (Worcester) in the
Western Cape. A secondary aim of the study was to determine the risk factors for death in
these neonates and children.
Methodology:
This was a retrospective descriptive survey of all paediatric admissions (under 13 years of
age; July 2008 till June 2009) to an intensive care unit at a large regional hospital in
Worcester, South Africa. Data collected included: demography, admission time, length of
stay, diagnoses, interventions and outcome. Outcome was defined as successful discharge,
death or transfer to a central hospital.
Results:
There were 194 admissions including children and neonates. The files of 185 children and
neonates were analysed, while 8 children were excluded due to incomplete data set and one
patient was a surgical admission. The male: female ratio was 1.3: 1 and the majority of
patients (83%) admitted, were younger than 12 months of age at admission with a mean age
of 8.5 months (median age 3.7 months; range 0 to 151 months). The majority (70%) of
admissions were successfully discharged, nearly a quarter (24%) transferred to central
hospitals in Cape Town and only 6% died (all younger than 5 years of age). Causes of death
included acute lower respiratory tract infections (33%), acute gastroenteritis (25%), birth
asphyxia complicated by pulmonary hypertension (16%) and prematurity (16%). Patients
requiring airway assistance, were more likely to experience an adverse event (p=0.0001) and
invasive ventilation was associated with an increased risk for a poor outcome (p=0.00). Conclusion:
The majority of children requiring access to a paediatric ICU are younger than one year of
age. The common causes of death are acute lower respiratory tract infections, acute
gastroenteritis, prematurity and neonatal asphyxia. A regional hospital in South Africa should
offer intensive care to children as the majority of their admissions can be successfully cared
for without transfer to tertiary hospitals. To our knowledge, this is the first study reporting
admissions and outcome of neonates and children cared for in a mixed intensive care unit in a
large regional hospital in South Africa. This study suggests that large regional hospitals in
South Africa should have mixed intensive care units to improve child survival.

A methodology to improve third sector investment strategies: the development and application of a Western Cape based financial resource allocation decision making modelSmit, Andre de Villiers 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (DPhill (Social Work))—University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / South Africa has high levels of social need which are steadily growing. While the third
sector is large and contributes substantially to social service provision, it together with
government is seemingly incapable of providing adequate social services, particularly
in the more poverty-stricken rural areas of the country. Among other, at the root of the
third sector’s inability to adequately serve the needy, is a lack of funding caused by
poor funding policies and uninformed financial resource allocation decision making.
As such, this study set out to develop an automated financial resource allocation
decision making model that would provide extensive organised data to better inform the
allocation decision making process – the first component of the study. It was also
purposed to provide a range of otherwise lacking empirical data on the third sector to
determine service and staffing norms, patterns of funding and to assess financial
management of this sector.
In so doing the Community Chest of the Western Cape was selected to serve as the
locus of the study – their existing manual allocation approach was analysed and a new
more sophisticated automated model was developed. Data generated by the model
pointed to a further research need, that of a better understanding of the funding and
financial management practices of the third sector. This gave rise to the third
component of the study, a survey of 232 beneficiary organisations of the Community
Chest. An analysis of the data generated by the model and collected from the survey
highlighted yet another need, the poor financial management acumen of the sector.
In order to address this need and hence the efficacy of the model, a survey of 207
University of Cape Town management accounting students was conducted to determine
the feasibility of using their financial management knowledge and skills to support
financially and IT-illiterate organisations – the fourth component of the study.
The study primarily adopted a quantitative research paradigm; the research design was
exploratory-descriptive and used a primary data design with limited secondary data
analysis. Data was captured in MS Access and analysed using Statistica and MS Excel.
Results indicated that the country’s funding policies were wanting and that the
allocation of state and state-controlled funding agency resources were not being
allocated in concert with adopted policy. In almost all cases the poorer rural areas had
and received fewer resources. Most organisations surveyed were not financially
secured and their ability to fundraise was very limited. Their financial management
ability was not good. Fortunately a substantial number of accounting students indicated
a willingness to improve the financial management ability of such needy organisations.
The study concludes by recommending further development of the model, utilisation of
accounting students and calls for a major assessment of third sector needs, its funding
and financial management. It also recommends the formulation of new funding
policies.
