The effect of a wheelchair sports presentation on modifying attitudes of junior high school students toward physically disabled persons

Knudson, Gail Ann January 1990 (has links)
The Contact Hypothesis (Amir, 1969) suggests that attitudes toward a minority group can be modified. However, attitudinal change depends upon the nature of the contact. The main purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the B.C. Wheelchair Sports Demonstration Team Presentation on attitudes of junior high school students toward physically disabled persons This was measured by the Attitudes Towards Disabled Persons Scale (ATDP) (Yuker et al., 1960) and the Modified Issues in Disability Scale (MIDS) (Makas, 1985). The treatment consisted of a one hour structured program that included contact with physically disabled persons and information about their disabilities. One hundred and thirty-one able-bodied students (ages 13-15) from four junior high schools in two British Columbia school districts participated in this study. Students from one school in each district attended the British Columbia Wheelchair Sports Demonstration Team Presentation. Students from the other school did not attend and were assigned to the control group. This research used a one-group pretest-posttest design with a posttest-only control group as a follow-up . four weeks after the treatment. Subjects in the experimental group completed the ATDP prior to and immediately after the treatment. As a result of the high correlation (r=.91) between the MIDS and ATDP with a prior sample of 15 year old students, both experimental and control groups completed only the MIDS four weeks after the treatment. All subjects completed the Social History Questionnaire (SHQ) (Makas, 1989) on each occasion. The SHQ gathered information on gender, birth date, place of residence and prior contact with physically disabled persons. A t-test for dependent samples comparing differences between pre- and posttest MIDS scores of the experimental group was not significant (p=.112 for a 2-tailed test). However, in the follow-up portion of the study, an analysis of variance of the ATDP found a significant difference between the experimental and control groups (p=.007). There were no significant interactions of gender, age or previous contact with treatment. The findings of this study show that able-bodied students' attitudes can be positively modified with an information plus contact program. Although the modification was not immediate, a delayed effect occurred. Three focuses of further investigations might include the following: a need for attitude modification research related to disabled persons particularly in the junior high school age group; continued reliability and validity testing of the MIDS, and a refinement of the SHQ to more accurately assess prior contact with disabled persons. / Education, Faculty of / Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP), Department of / Graduate

Effect of contact-release angle on hand-handrim for peak velocity

Moon, Jungun January 1992 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between the arm joint angle at contact-release with peak velocity in experienced cerebral palsied athletes during wheelchair propulsion. The subjects (n = 5) exercised for a few minutes to familiarize themselves with the roller set up. After practice, each subject was asked to push the wheelchair as fast as possible up to 10 seconds. A tach-generator was attached to the core of the roller and interfaced to a computer via an eight bit A/D converter. The sampling rate of the roller speed was 200Hz. One video camera operating at 30 frames per second, and posisioned 7 m from the roller side was used. The data were analyzed for shoulder, elbow, and wrist angles with the Peak Performance program in I.B.M. compatible computer. Subjects' peak velocities were 8.85, 4.49, 4.19, 3.66, and 4.09 m/s, and the mean percent of contact and release times were 32.8% vs 67.2%. Shoulder, elbow, and wrist contact angles were not statisticaly in this study. Results indicate that contact-release angle on hand-handrim was effected for peak velocity. Also there was no significantrelationship between speed and cycle time.Key WordsRacing wheelchair, cerebral palsy, Peak velocity, Propulsion, Joint angle. / School of Physical Education

This study aims to identify the clinical and cardiologic features in wheelchair athletes to know if athletes with other disabilities (Group others, mainly composed by individuals with Lower limb amputees and polio sequelae) are different of spinal cord injured athletes (SCI Group). 28 subjects were divided in two groups (SCI, n=13, others, n=15) and 12 male able-bodied subjects were allocated in control group. We measured clinical, echocardiography and carotid features. Also, Matrix of Metalloproteinase - 2, 8 and 9 and oxidized LDL. Our study have shown that athletes with SCI had lower left atrium diameter in comparing to Others Group (SCI 29.38 ±4.68mm, Others 33.12 ±2.94 mm, p<0.05) and worst diastolic function (E/Em) when compared to Others and Control group (SCI 6.55 ±1.51, Others 5.12 ±1.06 e Control 4.85 ±1.67, with p<0.05). This differences are not associated to biomarkers and we believe that is possible which the differences are due SCI specify / Doutorado / Atividade Fisica Adaptada / Doutor em Educação Física

Gatti, Andreia Maria Micai 24 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: José Irineu Gorla / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Educação Física / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-24T03:47:49Z (GMT). / Abstract: Classification in Paralympic sports is a part of competition regulation, playing an important role in minimizing the differences among athletes different disabilities. Classification has two important roles that are, to determine the eligibility to compete and to group athletes for competition. The Classification Code and International Standards of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) details policies and procedures that should be common to all sports. Since 2005, wheelchair handball (WH) has been playing in Brazil, following standardized regulation, mainly aiming competitive events, As WH is a relatively recent sport and still has not its own classification system, this research aims to propose a functional classification system, setting out the criteria and standards to be used in accordance with the Classification Code and International Standards. This study was divided into two chapters: (I) "Classification in Paralympic Sports: a Literature Review" which is a systematic review of classification on Paralympic Sports, and; (II) "Classification for wheelchair handball", a chapter where the regulaments and policies to be adopted for the practice of WH were discussed and subdivided into these different topics: history of the WH classification; principles, purposes and components; class sport; sport class status; competitive eligibility; minimum score for eligibility criteria within court; physical evaluation; assessment of functional movements; court observation; athletes assessment; manual muscle testing ; scoring manual testing (upper limb, lower limb and trunk); characteristics of sports classes; classification procedures, protests, appeals, eligibility to become a classifier and classifier certification. Therefore, the current study tries to establish a guideline that might help the procedures for the WH functional classification system. / Mestrado / Atividade Fisica Adaptada / Mestra em Educação Física
