The Sequence Stratigraphy of the Middle Cambrian Wheeler Formation in the Drum Mountains of West Central Utah

Schneider, Loren P. 01 January 2000 (has links)
The majority of the Middle Cambrian Wheeler Formation in the Drum Mountains was deposited during a single 3rd order sequence. Superimposed onto this sequence are three indistinct 4th order cycles and twenty distinct 5th order cycles. These higher other cycles were likely deposited within short intervals of geologic time (204 to 405 ky). The lower sequence boundary zone occurs within the Swasey Formation. The Transgressive Surface is the contact between the Swaset and Wheeler Formations. The Maximum Flooding Surface is located near the top of the lower Wheeler Formation, which also approximates the base of the Ptychagnostus atavus range zone. The upper sequence boundary is marked by stromatolites, which occur near the top of the upper member of the Wheeler Formation in the Drum Mountains. Deposition of the Wheeler Formation in the Drum Mountains was controlled by eustacy and tectonics. Local normal faulting associated with Middle Cambrian postrifting thermal subsidence may have caused some of the 5th order cycles. The cycles and surfaces defined in this stratigraphic analysis, and the base of the Ptychagnostus atavus and P. gibbus range-zones, can be used to correlate strata occurring in other localities in the eastern Great Basin. In addition, this study enables the evaluation of the effect of tectonics (faulting) versus global eustacy on the sedimentary regime occurring within the Middle Cambrian House Range Embayment. Aplicação de uma nova proposta de discretização das equações Griffin-Wheeler-Hartree-Fock na geração de bases Gaussianas para cálculos de átomos e moléculas / Aplication of a new proposal for the discretization of the Griffin-Wheeler-Hartree-Fock equations in the generation of Gaussian leases for atomic and molecular calculations

Reis, Carlos Alberto Gonçalves 28 August 2009 (has links)
The ongoing evolution of computers has led to several changes in the way of doing science, to create a multitude of new options for solving scientific problems. The implementation of computational methods allowed the theoretical treatment of large systems, complex and different areas of science. One area of particular focus and chemistry of molecules, now can describe relatively complex molecular systems with extreme precision. The theoretical methods in molecular chemistry can be basically divided into classical and quantum methods, depending on what we consider, we can also use sequential or hybrid methods, however for a detailed description of the electronic structure and chemical bonds is required the use of quantum methods. Ab initio calculations of the electronic structure of atoms and molecules have been specially made for the first time using the method of Roothaan expansion in the decade of the fifties . In 1986, a full version of the equations of Griffin-Wheeler-Hartree-Fock (HF-GW) was presented in the literature , inspired by the Method of Coordinate Generator (MCG), introduced by Griffin and Wheeler in the decade of fifty . The full equations of the Hartree-Fock method was called the Generator Coordinate Hartree-Fock (HF-MCG) and its first applications was the generation of atomic universal bases In fact, a careful numerical integration of equations of GW-HF allows the generation of universal bases and more widespread than those already published in the literature .Recently, Barbosa and Silva proposed a modification in the methodology of the discretization to improve the collection of sets of Gaussian functions (GTF) by means of MCG-HF, making possible the generation of GTF as good or better as the so far obtained in the literature, but more compact and precise (accurate). A polynomial expansion is proposed as a new way to discretize the Griffin-Wheeler-Hartree-Fock equations of the Generator Coordinate Hartree-Fock method. The implementation of the polynomial expansion in the Generator Coordinate Hartree-Fock method discretizes the Griffin-Wheeler-Hartree-Fock equations through a numerical mesh, which is not equally spaced. This procedure makes the optimization of Gaussian exponents in the Generator Coordinate Hartree-Fock method more flexible and more efficient. The results obtained with the polynomial expansion for atomic Hartree-Fock energies show this technique is very powerful when employed in the design of compact and high accurate Gaussian basis sets used in ab initio non-relativistic (Hartree-Fock) and relativistic (Dirac-Fock) calculations.

Lossless and nearly-lossless image compression based on combinatorial transforms / Compression d'images sans perte ou quasi sans perte basée sur des transformées combinatoires

Syahrul, Elfitrin 29 June 2011 (has links)
We present a different approach for loss-less image compression, it is based on combinatorial transform. The main transform is Burrows Wheeler Transform (BWT) which tends to reorder symbols according to their following context. It becomes a promising compression approach based on contextmodelling. BWT was initially applied for text compression software such as BZIP2 ; nevertheless it has been recently applied to the image compression field. Compression scheme based on Burrows Wheeler Transform is usually lossless ; therefore we imple-ment this algorithm in medical imaging in order to reconstruct every bit. Many vari-ants of the three stages which form the original BWT-based compression scheme can be found in the literature. We propose an analysis of the more recent methods and the impact of their association. Then, we present several compression schemes based on this transform which significantly improve the current standards such as JPEG2000and JPEG-LS. In the final part, we present some open problems which are also further research directions

Late archaic variability and change on the southern Columbia plateau : archaeological investigations in the Pine Creek drainage of the Middle John Day River, Wheeler County, Oregon

2 v. (xxiii, 627 p.): ill., maps. A print copy of this title is available through the UO Libraries under the call number: KNIGHT E78.O6 E53 1994 / A major concern of Columbia Plateau archaeology has been the development of the ethnographic "Plateau pattern." Observed during historic times, this lifeway focused on permanent riverine winter villages and intensive use of anadromous fish, with ephemeral use of interior tributaries and uplands for hunting and root gathering. Constrained by a salvage-driven orientation, past archaeological research on the Plateau has been biased towards major rivers, leaving aboriginal lifeways in the interior to be interpreted on the basis of ethnographic analogy, rather than archaeological evidence. The present study utilizes museum collections from the Pine Creek basin, a small tributary of the John Day River, to provide information on prehistoric lifeways in a non-riverine Plateau setting. Cultural assemblages and features from two sites, 35WH7 and 35WH14, were described, classified, and analyzed with regard to temporal distribution, spatial and functional patterning, and regional ties. At 35WH14, evidence of semisubterranean pithouses containing a rich and diverse cultural assemblage suggests long-term and repeated residential occupation of this site by about 2600 B.P. This contrasts with the ephemeral use predicted for the area by ethnographic accounts. Faunal remains identified from 35WH7 and 35WH14 show a persistent emphasis on deer, and little evidence for use of fish; this non-riverine economic base represents a further departure from the ethnographic "Plateau pattern." At both 35WH14 and 35WH7, large pithouses are not evident in components dating after 900 B.P., reflecting a shift to shorter sojourns at these sites. Use of the Study Area as a whole persists, however, and is marked by a proliferation of radiocarbon-dated occupations between 630 and 300 B.P. Clustering of radiocarbon dates from ten sites in the Study Area shows correlations with regional environmental changes. Both taphonomic and cultural factors are discussed. Reduced human use of the area after 300 B.P. is reflected in an abrupt decline in radiocarbon-dated occupations and the near-absence of Euroamerican trade goods. The role of precontact introduced epidemics is considered. Further consideration of spatial and temporal variability in Late Archaic Plateau prehistory is urged. / Committee in charge: Dr. C. [en] THE BURROWS-WHEELER TRANSFORM AND ITS APPLICATIONS TO COMPRESSION / [pt] A TRANSFORMADA DE BURROWS-WHEELER E SUA APLICAÇÃO À COMPRESSÃO

JULIO CESAR DUARTE 23 July 2003 (has links)
[en] The Burrows-Wheeler Transform, based on sorting of contexts, transforms a sequence of characters into a new sequence easier to compress by an algorithm that exploits long sequences of repeted characters. Combined with the coding provided by the MoveToFront Algorithm and followed by a codification for the generated integers, they propose a new family of compressors, that achieve excellent compression rates with good time performances in compression and decompression. This work examines detaildedly this transform, its variations and some alternatives for the algorithms used together with it. As a final result, we present a combination of strategies that producescompression rates for text data that are better than those offered by implementations available nowadays.
