Deer Damage in Virginia: Implications for ManagementWest, Benjamin C. 21 May 1998 (has links)
A questionnaire was sent to 1,506 randomly selected agricultural producers and homeowners in Virginia during 1996 to determine perceptions about deer damage and management during 1995 (response rate 52%). Overall, 58% of respondents experienced damage by deer to their plantings during 1995. Producers (71%) were more likely to experience deer damage than homeowners (37%) Among farmers, producers of soybeans, tree fruits, and peanuts were most likely to experience damage and generally rated it as being more severe than that reported by others. Regardless of perceptions regarding damage, most (70%) individuals believed that Virginia's deer population should be reduced to some degree in the future. Respondents' perceptions regarding the level of damage influenced their opinion about the level to which deer populations should be reduced; those perceiving greater damage were increasingly likely to desire a dramatic decrease in Virginia's deer population. Similarly, perception about the level of damage affected a respondent's general opinion about deer; respondents who experienced severe damage also were more likely to believe that deer are a nuisance. Overall, a majority (84%) of respondents favored recreational hunting as a means to manage deer in Virginia. A respondent's gender and the situation in which they were raised (e.g., urban, rural, farm) were strongly related to preference for management options. Female respondents and those raised in more urban areas were more likely to favor "non-lethal" management options (i.e., contraception, trapping and relocating individuals, allowing nature to take its course, fencing, and repellents) than were male respondents and those raised in rural environments. Deer density in a respondent's county of residence was directly related to perception regarding deer damage and desire for future population management (e.g., reduction versus increase).
A pilot study was conducted to assess the impacts of refugia on traditional deer management efforts via recreational hunting during 1996. Two study areas in Virginia were selected and, using information supplied by the county tax office, questionnaires were sent to individuals who owned land in the respective areas to determine distribution of land-uses, extent and severity of deer damage, and role of recreational hunting within each site. Deer damage was strongly related to land-use; respondents who owned lands on which some agricultural activity occurred were more likely to experience damage than respondents who owned non-agricultural lands. Respondents in each study area harvested more deer from their land than the mean harvest rate for the county in which they resided. Thus, it appears that, in some situations, deer harvest did not reduce damage to an acceptable level. The presence of local refugia theoretically had the potential to contribute to this relationship, but more research is needed to make definitive conclusions. / Master of Science

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) commonly consume row crops, with yield losses often attributed to their browsing. Deer density and field morphology may predict yield losses within local areas. We sought to 1) determine the effects of deer browsing on corn and soybean yields and investigate if deer density or field morphology correlated to yield loss in western Kentucky, and 2) compare pellet-based distance sampling to game camera surveys to determine if a distance sampling technique could accurately estimate deer density during the growing season. Overall, deer reduced corn and soybean yields on one-half of surveyed properties. Deer density did not influence yield losses in either crop; however, field morphology correlated with soybean yield losses. Pellet-based distance sampling provided statistically similar estimates as our game camera survey technique; however, at the individual farm level distance sampling estimates proved unreliable. Inaccurate model parameter (i.e., defecation rates) and inability to detect pellet groups in dense vegetation complicated the reliability of distance sampling models. Overall, yield losses from deer occur in western Kentucky and may be a localized event. Finally, game camera surveys should be used over pellet-based distance sampling during the growing season until detection issues and inaccurate model parameters are solved.

Malignant Catarrhal Fever Viruses in Tennessee RuminantsCissell, Robin Lynn 01 August 2010 (has links)
Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is a lymphoproliferative and inflammatory syndrome affecting primarily ruminant species. The disease, which is often fatal, is most often described as affecting bovids and cervids. No vaccines are available for prevention of MCFV infection. The primary method to control spread of disease is to prevent contact between carriers and clinically susceptible species. There is no known method to control infection of malignant catarrhal fever virus-white-tailed deer variant (MCFV-WTD), as the carrier animal of this virus is unknown.
To determine the prevalence of malignant catarrhal fever viruses in Tennessee ruminant populations, blood and/or lymph node samples were collected from farms, animal processing and disposal facilities, and hunter check-in stations from 2006-2008 from several species of animals including cervids, cattle, and goats. Strain-specific real time PCR was developed to detect ovine herpesvirus-2 (OvHV-2), caprine herpesvirus-2 (CpHV-2), and MCFV-WTD DNA. MCFV DNA was detected in all species of ruminants sampled. Although disease related to infection with MCFV-WTD and CpHV-2 has not been reported in Tennessee cattle or cervid populations, MCFV-WTD DNA was detected in 3 percent of cervid samples, and MCFV-WTD and CpHV-2 DNA was detected in 27 and 3 percent respectively of cattle samples from animal disposal facilities that process dead or debilitated animals. One hunter harvested deer (n=781) and 25 cattle (n=165) tested from animal disposal facilities were positive for OvHV-2 DNA.
This study demonstrated that healthy cattle and cervids can be infected with OvHV-2 and MCFV-WTD without apparent disease, and dead or debilitated cattle were infected with OvHV-2, MCFV-WTD and CpHV-2 at a higher percentage than healthy herd animals. Prevalence of CpHV-2 in Tennessee goat populations (7%) was significantly lower than reported in other goat populations (73%). Low prevalence of CpHV-2 in Tennessee goat populations likely explains why no evidence of infection was found in cervids tested, and the low prevalence of CpHV-2 infection in dead or debilitated cattle compared to prevalence of infection with OvHV-2 and MCFV-WTD. The discovery of infection in cattle with CpHV-2 and MCFV-WTD opens a new avenue of investigation into the pathology and virulence of MCFV’s in domestic cattle.

Wildlife and water: collective action and social capital of selected landowner associations in TexasWagner, Matthew Wayne 25 April 2007 (has links)
In Texas, landowner associations for the management of common-pool resources
such as wildlife and groundwater have become increasingly popular. Successful
management of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) depends upon the collective
decision-making of landowners. Likewise, aquifer reserves are a trans-boundary
resource subject to the "rule of capture." Numerous factors may affect the success of
common-pool associations, including property ownership and habitat characteristics,
landowner demographics, and social capital. I used a mail questionnaire to explore the
relationship between these factors and their effect on association activities and
management practices for eight Wildlife Management Associations (WMAs) occurring
within the Lower Post Oak Savannah (LPOS) and the Central Post Oak Savannah
(CPOS). In addition, I compared responses of members of WMAs in CPOS to members
of the Brazos Valley Water Alliance (BVWA), a groundwater association situated in the
region. Compared to CPOS, members of WMAs within the LPOS belonged to much
larger groups, were generally more recent landowners that met more often, raised more
money using more funding methods, and tended to have longer association membership
than CPOS landowners, yet they had lower social capital. CPOS landowners owned
significantly more land and considered relaxation/leisure and hunting more important
land uses than LPOS landowners. The smaller group size in CPOS may be the most
important factor in building social capital. Intra-association trust was positively
influenced by the longevity of property ownership, the number of association meetings,
the percentage of males in the association, and other factors. Negative influences on trust
included absentee ownership and Habitat Cover Index, which was a measure of the
amount of wooded habitat present.
In CPOS, members of the BVWA were part of a much larger, more
heterogeneous, and more recently formed group than members of WMAs. They also
placed greater importance on utilitarian aspects of their properties, as opposed to land
stewardship for conservation as practiced by members of WMAs.
If associations are kept small ( < 50) with more frequent meetings, greater social
capital and information sharing may be achieved, which may lead to increased land
stewardship practices. However, landowners may be motivated more by their shared
values independent of any benefit from their association.

Diet reconstruction of wolves following a decline in Manitoba moose populationsMocker, Danielle 14 September 2015 (has links)
Moose populations in southern Manitoba have declined. Although the primary cause of this decline is unclear, wolf predation is considered a main contributor because wolves have limited moose populations elsewhere. To help understand the role of wolf predation in limiting moose populations we reconstructed the proportional diet of wolves using stable isotope analysis and a Bayesian stable isotope mixing model (MixSIAR). We tested the assumptions of MixSIAR by running sensitivity analyses on trophic discrimination and prior information.
We observed differences in wolf diet in areas where moose and deer coexist and are spatially separated, with changes both seasonally and annually. Our results suggest white-tailed deer were preyed on during winter, even in areas where deer are locally rare, suggesting prey catchability is more important than local prey density. Seasonal changes in prey accessibility strongly affect wolf predation rates, and manipulating alternative prey populations could mitigate predation impacts on moose. / October 2015

Perspectives on prions : mapping the social landscape around chronic wasting disease on the Canadian prairies2014 April 1900 (has links)
Social perspectives on natural resources management have become an increasingly valuable part of natural resources management decision making, especially at the policy or governance level. However, due to the range of social contexts that can exist around management questions, not every technique for incorporating stakeholders into management is suited for every management problem. My research examines the social landscape around chronic wasting disease (CWD) management on the Canadian prairies in order to identify a way forward for stakeholder involvement in CWD management. CWD is a prion disease that results in neurodegeneration and death in cervids. CWD has the potential for broad social impact because it infects elk and deer, species which are both hunted and ranched. Furthermore, management and monitoring efforts in free-ranging cervids frequently incorporate hunting activity. Q methodology was used to survey stakeholders in Saskatchewan and Manitoba and synthesize perspectives about stakeholder understanding of CWD as a problem and preferences for potential solutions. The perspectives that emerged emphasized the importance of increasing knowledge about CWD and a generalized trust in government management, coupled with a desire for stakeholder consultation under the auspices of government leadership. I found that CWD management may not be ready for stakeholder spearheaded management activity due to ambivalence and uncertainty among stakeholders, but stakeholder involvement in CWD management can still offer valuable insight for managers. This is especially notable in light of the recent loss of Saskatchewan’s CWD monitoring program.

Grain-dependent habitat selection in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus)2014 October 1900 (has links)
A fundamental problem in ecology is determining what factors affect the distribution of organisms across a landscape. Landscapes are by their nature heterogeneous and different habitat types confer different fitness benefits and costs to organisms that inhabit them. Ecologists are now aware of the importance of examining multiple spatial scales when designing studies quantifying animal resource selection. Scale of analysis has been shown to be important, since ecological pressures relating to the establishment of a home range differ from those relating to the use of resources within the home range. Most studies that examine multiple spatial scales examine the effect of modifying extent. Here, I examine the role of grain, an underappreciated component of scale, on our interpretation of habitat selection patterns and functional response.
The goal of this thesis was to examine how grain size affects the interpretation of animal resource selection and functional response across multiple habitats. The perceptual range of an individual is known to change with habitat, therefore I hypothesized that resource selection and functional response would be both grain- and habitat-dependent, and that resource selection functions computed using different grains for different resources would be more predictive than models computed using only a single grain.
I used GPS-collared white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) to quantify resource selection functions at various grains and used generalized linear mixed effects modelling and multi-model inference techniques to examine how resource selection patterns changed with spatial scale across habitat types. I used selection ratios to examine functional response across grains. Model coefficients changed with grain and the strength of selection varied by habitat type. Multi-grain resource selection functions had lower AIC values and better cross-validation scores than single grain models. Functional response varied with scale and habitat type, displaying a unique relationship for each habitat. My results suggest that spatial memory and habitat-dependent perceptual range play an important role in resource selection. I conclude that the examination of multiple grains in the study of animal habitat selection and functional response represents a step forward in our ability to understand what drives the distribution and abundance of organisms.

Cumulative effects of human landscape change, predators, and natural habitat drive distributions of an invasive ungulateDarlington, Siobhan 07 December 2018 (has links)
Human footprint - in which land is converted for human use - is a leading contributor to global habitat and biodiversity loss. The accelerated rate of human landscape change to meet our growing needs has led to the direct loss of critical habitat and shifts in species distributions, interactions, and behaviour. These altered conditions affect species’ ability to adapt to environmental stressors, while some species thrive and others decline. In North America, one ungulate has successfully invaded new habitat in conjunction with human land use – the white-tailed deer. Across the continent, the invasion of white-tailed deer has led to increased competition with other ungulate species including mule deer, moose, and woodland caribou. In regions with abundant apex predators, they have become a source of primary prey as their populations increase. The mechanisms by which deer occupy landscapes in the northern extents of their geographic range are not well studied outside of the winter months, or how deer respond behaviourally to various types of human disturbance in a predator-rich environment.
To address these knowledge gaps, I examined population scale resource selection across seasons and individual movement behaviour in white-tailed deer in northeastern Alberta’s intensively developed oil and gas landscape. I used previously developed models of predator frequency to spatially extrapolate wolf and black bear occurrence across my study region as indicators of indirect predation risk. I used two approaches to habitat modeling to examine deer responses to various modes of human landscape change, including roads, seismic lines, and cut blocks in addition to predators and natural habitat. Deer were best described by cumulative effects – or the combination of all of these factors – across all seasons with proximity to linear features explaining the most variation among the parameters tested. Most prominently in winter, deer strongly selected for habitat features expected to contain abundant natural sources of forage, and linear features, despite a potential increased risk of predation by wolves – suggesting that deer make energetic trade-offs between forage availability and predation risk. At the individual level, deer significantly increased their rate of movement when occupying habitat associated with predation risk. I suggest that deer make greater energetic trade-offs during winter when mobility is limited to evade predators and energetic costs are higher.
The continued use of anthropogenic features post-winter, increased rate of movement and spread of landscape occupancy by deer may allude to the importance of human disturbance in maintaining deer in northern climates. Linear corridors may be an important mechanism by which deer are able to successfully colonize new areas at the northern extents of their range. My results shed light on the drivers of deer distributions in human altered landscapes for managing populations where the invasion of deer is complicit in the decline of other ungulate species such as woodland caribou in Alberta’s boreal forest. / Graduate
