The need to understand the dynamics of the impala
population in Mkuzi Game Reserve arose during the early 1960's
when it became clear that various factors were contributing to
an overpopulation of the species in the reserve. Population
management was recognized as being necessary and was
carried out, but it was based on inadequate information. This study set out to establish a rational basis for future
management. The social organization and behaviour of impala
in Mkuzi were analysed and placed in perspective relative to
the population dynamics. Two methods of counting the animals
were used and a relationship obtained between the respective
results. The distribution of impala within the reserve, both
on a gross population basis and with respect to the various
sex and age categories, was determined from sampling.
In order to establish the age structure of the population,
samples obtained from the control programme were used, and
these were aged on the basis of molar wear. At the same time
the proportions of young animals and the population sex ratios
were obtained by field sampling.
Using these data, life tables were constructed, from .
which it was possible to interpret the behaviour of the population
at the time of the study. However, caution should be exercised
in extrapolating these results literally to the same population
under different conditions. The study only provides guidelines
for regular monitoring to be carried out. At the same time a
more detailed study of the vegetation dynamics of Mkuzi Game
Reserve is a priority so that the relationship between the animal

Environmental stochasticity and African elephant population dynamics : investigating limitation through juvenile mortality.January 2008 (has links)
The successful conservation management of African elephants depends largely on understanding the fundamental processes driving the population regulation of this species. Southern Africa’s increasing populations have raised concern over the impact of high elephant densities on the system, in stark contrast against the elephant’s more precarious position in other parts of Africa. As we search for solutions from the processes of historical elephant regulation, we realise that there is a decided lack of empirical evidence to explicitly direct our efforts. In this PhD, I attempt to investigate the application of the classic pattern of large herbivore population limitation, which mainly involves high juvenile mortality in response to stochastic environmental events, to African elephant population dynamics. Firstly, I evaluated the magnitude and frequency of mortality events that would be required to prevent elephant population growth. The death of 85 % of infants and weaned calves would need to occur twice a generation, while a single severe mortality event (causing the death of all infants and weaned calves and 10 % of the rest of the population) once a generation would be sufficient. However, the severity of these events is not matched in natural occurrence in Africa today and only a single recorded event in Tsavo National Park, Kenya, in the 1970’s has come close when more than 7 000 died during a very severe drought. Secondly, I evaluated the potential role of fire as a stochastic, massmortality event limiting elephant populations. I found that fire functions in a similar manner to other environmental catastrophes and primarily causes high juvenile mortality. However, this catastrophic event also highlighted the extreme behavioural and physiological impacts experienced by the elephant population involved. The potential role of these types of events on long-term female fecundity needs further investigation. In isolation, this type of mortality event would need to occur with high frequency to prevent population growth. However, in combination with a decrease in female fecundity, these stochastic events may have a much greater impact on population demography than first thought. Thirdly, I investigated a potential mechanistic link between stochastic mortality events and juvenile susceptibility to resource limitation. Allometric relationships dictate that juveniles select a diet of higher quality than adult elephants. We found that this was achieved by weaned calf selection of higher quality plant parts, although use of plant types and plant species was similar to that of adult females, who they move across the landscape with. The strong sexual dimorphism exhibited by this species was reflected in adult male use of lower quality forage than adult females (or juveniles) in both dry and wet seasons. Diet quality scaled negatively with body size, but adult females consistently selected a higher quality diet than adult males, irrespective of body size. The nutritional and reproductive demands placed on an individual during different life-history stages therefore influence foraging strategies, together with nutrient requirements, e.g. phosphorus for pregnancy/lactation selected consistently by females when unrestricted in the wet season, protein for growth selected consistently by weaned calves. Competitive displacement of adult females to feed at higher levels in the canopy by calves also influenced feeding behaviour. Therefore intraspecific body size, nutritional requirements (in terms of nutrients and energy) and competition had a strong influence on foraging strategy employed by age-sex classes of elephants in response to seasonal environmental change. More selective juvenile foraging requirements means that juveniles are most susceptible to resource limitation, for example during stochastic environmental events such as droughts. In small, closed systems, juvenile mortality is likely to have a strong influence on elephant population regulation, with a slight, temporary decrease in female fecundity possibly acting in conjunction with juvenile mortality effects. Therefore, stochastic environmental events such as drought and fire may be the only natural incidence of population regulation to occur in these systems, where populations continue to grow exponentially and there is no evidence of density-dependence (as in the case of many small, fenced reserves in South Africa). In large, open, high-density systems in other parts of southern Africa, density dependence acts strongly on female fecundity and causes low levels of juvenile mortality in areas of local population aggregation. Therefore, in isolation, natural juvenile mortality is unlikely to regulate African elephant populations, but in conjunction with decreased female fecundity in response to density-dependent feedbacks and stochastic environmental events, population regulation may occur. The management of long-lived megaherbivore species with similar demographic drivers must include an appreciation of the complexity of population response to manipulation of mortality or fecundity effects. Small changes can potentially result in large shifts in population dynamics. Trends in the game industry in the Eastern CapeFerreira, Janene January 2016 (has links)
The game industry has become one of the fastest-growing industries in South Africa and consequently, during recent years, a growing number of stock farms have been converted to game farms. All forms of utilization within the game industry play a vital role with regards to sustainability and simultaneously contributing a significant boost to the national economy. It is therefore important to ensure that game ranchers are as well-informed as possible in their decision-making, as well as in assessing their outputs and endeavours. However, the information available on the game industry in the Eastern Cape is limited. This research study therefore focuses on the emerging trends in the game industry in the province. The objectives of the research are to examine various pertinent factors associated with the game industry, investigate the trends and discuss whether these trends have any implications for future purposes. The research commenced with a literature review, as well as information from earlier survey studies of the Eastern Cape game industry. For the current study, a replicate survey was conducted throughout the Eastern Cape, involving as many game ranchers as possible, and data were collected by means of self-administered questionnaires. The dilemma confronting the black wildebeest in the Eastern Cape was thoroughly investigated, together with farmers’ opinions and trends for the future of the species. It was important to include this particular aspect in the research, as at the time of the survey, widespread concerns were expressed with regards to new legislation which emerged during that time. The research cast light on several aspects associated with the industry which could positively assist game ranchers towards improved management and planning, as well as provide guidelines for future development purposes. Furthermore, the research identified crucial issues that should receive immediate attention from stakeholders across the industry as well as government.

Causal determinants of the public's attitudes towards hunting as a basis for strategies to improve the social legitimacy of huntingCoetzer, Wentzel Christoffel January 2014 (has links)
It is widely acknowledged that the organised wildlife and hunting industry in South Africa contributes significantly to the country’s economy, as well as to the effective management and conservation of wildlife on privately owned land. Despite this, hunting has come under increasing attack by anti-hunting proponents who wish to bring a ban on hunting. A number of broad shifts across society at large and lobbying against hunting by anti-hunting proponents have given rise to legitimate concerns regarding the social acceptability of hunting. To maintain the social legitimacy of hunting, it is imperative to put strategies in place to actively broaden the base of public acceptance of hunting. Towards this aim, this study is an empirical investigation of the causal determinants of the public’s attitudes towards hunting and of the implications it holds for improving the social legitimacy of hunting. The study commenced by building a sound theoretical foundation from the available literature on the measurement of attitudes, the structure and formation of attitudes, the instrumental and experiential aspects of attitudes, attitudinal ambivalence, the psychology of strong attitudes, as well as the phenomenon of cognitive dissonance. Thereafter, the study turned to identify an adequate and empirically valid research approach for investigating attitudes and its causal determinants. A popular attitude theory in social psychology, namely the theory of reasoned action, was identified as a suitable conceptual framework for conducting this study. According to the reasoned action model, the salient behavioural beliefs people associate with a particular behaviour form the informational foundation (or cognitive foundation) on which their attitudes towards the behaviour are based. More specifically, the model suggests that peoples’ overall attitude towards a behaviour is a function of their perceived probability that a behaviour will produce certain outcomes (belief strength), as well as the degree to which they judge the perceived outcomes of the behaviour as positive or negative (outcome evaluation). The methodological design of the study’s empirical component was strictly based on the standard procedures prescribed by the theory of reasoned action. Two consecutive and methodologically interrelated surveys were conducted amongst members of the public to collect the study’s primary data. The main salient behavioural beliefs on which different attitudes towards hunting are based were identified and further investigated. The results were analysed from the perspective of the theory of reasoned action and a clear understanding of the causal determinants of different attitudes towards hunting were attained. Based on the findings of the study, a number of conclusions and recommendations were made that may guide the development of future strategies to improve the social legitimacy of hunting. Amongst other things, it was suggested that public education programmes should be developed to address the public’s misconceptions of hunting; that public relation campaigns be undertaken to improve the public’s negative image of hunters; and that hunter education programmes be put in place to make hunters aware of the role they could play at community level to improve the social acceptability of hunting. Detailed guidelines regarding the contents of such education programmes and public relation campaigns were provided.

Attitudes towards hunting amongst the economically active public in Port ElizabethCoetzer, Wentzel Christoffel January 2010 (has links)
Wildlife ranching is recognized as one of the important agricultural industries in South Africa, with hunting being the primary segment of the game industry. Hunting is an essential part of wildlife management and it contributes significantly to the conservation of biodiversity and to the economy. Despite this, the social acceptability of hunting is often questioned and negative attitudes towards hunting within the larger society may become a potential threat to the hunting industry. This may jeopardize the effective management of game and have a negative impact on conservation and the economy. This study is an empirical investigation of the attitudes of the economically active public in Port Elizabeth towards hunting. The objectives of this study are to investigate the nature and extent of the public's attitudes towards hunting, as well as to identify factors influencing the public's attitudes towards hunting. The study commenced with the establishment of a theoretical framework, based on a literature study on the psychology of human perceptions and attitudes towards hunting. The theoretical framework was then used to develop the empirical component of the study. A survey was conducted amongst a statistically representative sample of the economically active public in Port Elizabeth during 2009. The data was collected by means of personal interviews and self-administered questionnaires were used as the survey instrument. The study found that the economically active public in Port Elizabeth generally holds favourable attitudes towards hunting, with only a small proportion of the population wanting to ban hunting. The belief that hunting endangers wildlife was the most prominent reason for opposing hunting. Negative attitudes towards hunting were largely based on incorrect beliefs regarding hunting. The extent of a person's knowledge of hunting and exposure to hunting, as well as a person's social ties had a significant influence on their attitudes towards hunting.

Situated 20 km apart, the Northern Tuli Game Reserve is predominantly unfenced with unrestricted animal movements, as opposed to the Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve which is completely fenced. Historically both lion populations have faced various but similar pressures such as safari hunting, snaring, poisoning and killing due to perceived conflict with livestock farmers.

A number of hypotheses have being proposed to explain this behavior. This study, in an area with an intact predator community, strongly support the predation-risk hypothesis and attempts to clarify the function of sexual segregation in buffalo in southern Africa. It also contributes to understanding the possible consequences of selective removal of males for hunting or culling purposes.
