Wilhelm Dilthey's Theory of World-Views and Its Meta-Philosophical Significance / The Meta-Philosophical Significance of Dilthey's World-View

Noonan, Austin January 2023 (has links)
In this thesis, I argue for the viability of Wilhelm Dilthey’s theory of world-views as a form of meta-philosophy by defending its response to the challenge of history that arose in Germany in the second half of the nineteenth century. I show that Dilthey’s account of philosophy as a universal activity that is rooted in our psychological need for stability successfully integrates history’s insight into the contingency and plurality of philosophical systems without abandoning their truthfulness or tradition. To demonstrate and qualify the success of Dilthey’s theory, I apply it to Albert Camus’ The Myth of Sisyphus which I argue fails to sufficiently address its own historical contingency when it presents its account of and response to the problem of absurdity as a descriptive fact of critical consciousness. I show that Dilthey’s concept of reflective historical consciousness has the necessary resources to overcome Camus’ lack of reflection upon historical contingency. I argue further that Camus’ work reveals the inadequacy of Dilthey’s typology of philosophical world-views by resisting classification by its categories. My thesis therefore contributes to contemporary work on meta-philosophy by showing that Dilthey’s theory of world-views, while limited by its typologies, offers its history of philosophy as a viable form of meta-philosophy. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA) / In this thesis, I aim to clarify how philosophy should attune itself to historical knowledge by analyzing Wilhelm Dilthey’s theory of world-views. More specifically, I aim to investigate the utility of Dilthey’s theory as a response to history’s insight into the contingent nature of philosophy. I argue that Dilthey’s view of philosophy as a natural extension of our psychological need for stability is capable of accounting for the contingency and plurality of philosophical systems without sacrificing philosophy’s claim to a unique and universal essence. To support my argument, I use Albert Camus’ The Myth of Sisyphus as a characteristic case of philosophy failing to incorporate historical knowledge and show that Dilthey’s theory can overcome this failure through its account of reflective historical consciousness.

Pojetí dějinnosti u Paula Yorcka von Wartenburg / Paul Yorck von Wartenburg's conception of Geschichtlichkeit

De Melo Coan, Isadora Cristina January 2021 (has links)
Paul Yorck von Wartenburgs Auffassung von Geschichtlichkeit Abstract The aim of this research is to examine the conception of historicity [Geschichtlichkeit] of the count Paul Yorck von Wartenburg - who is perhaps better known for his friendship with Wilhelm Dilthey. The recuperation and investigation of Yorck's arguments takes place in the context of his rejection of metaphysical and positivist models as well as from his constant intellectual exchange with Dilthey. The focus of the present analysis is Yorck's concept of person, strongly influenced by Christian doctrine, as well as his psychology of history: here we will identify how the author understands historical reality and the dependency between attitudes of consciousness [Bewusstseinsstellungen] and the context of life. Adjacent concepts ofYorck's conception of historicity, such as syndesmos (historical connection between people), "aliveness" or life [Lebendigkeit], totality [Totalität] and the human being in its entirety [Ganzer Mensch], are also examined in order to better understand Yorck's notion of historicity and its divergences to Dilthey's approach to the humanities. These observations allow us to identify some of the ways in which the relation between philosophy and history has been thought. Keywords: Paul Yorck von Wartenburg; Historicity...

Fundamentos filosóficos para uma crítica e legítima aplicação do direito: o operar do círculo hermenêutico na compreensão jurídica

Sá, Waltenberg Lima de 10 February 2014 (has links)
This work presents a new paradigm for legal hermeneutics, divorced from positivism and hence the legal doctrine. To do so, outlines the doctrinal framework that preceded the construction of the theoretical framework used here , the philosophical hermeneutics of Gadamer, whose keynote is in opposition to the method as the only means to get to the truth. When entering your analysis itself, seeks to work with the most important concepts, such as tradition, authority, pre-understanding and the fusion of horizons, in order to pave the way to understand what he describes as a circle hermeneutic, a key concept for the demarcation of the proposal developed here. On this, also seeks to make an evolutionary analysis of the proposals of the thinkers that preceded the gadameriano concept. Outlined the substance of philosophical hermeneutics, we proceed to the analysis of its operation in legal interpretation, printing a critical reflection on the understanding in the application of law and, as a corollary, contributing to overcome the positivist paradigm and its aporias and as for the discussion about the legitimacy of judicial decisions. Thus seeks to clarify the contribution of Gadamer to legal thought, from his philosophical hermeneutics to explain, justify and legitimize the path taken by the judge pronouncing judgments.

Early Educational Reform in North Germany: its Effects on Post-Reformation German Intellectuals

Peterson, Rebecca C. (Rebecca Carol) 12 1900 (has links)
Martin Luther supported the development of the early German educational system on the basis of both religious and social ideals. His impact endured in the emphasis on obedience and duty to the state evident in the north German educational system throughout the early modern period and the nineteenth century. Luther taught that the state was a gift from God and that service to the state was a personal vocation. This thesis explores the extent to which a select group of nineteenth century German philosophers and historians reflect Luther's teachings. Chapters II and III provide historiography on this topic, survey Luther's view of the state and education, and demonstrate the adherence of nineteenth century German intellectuals to these goals. Chapters IV through VII examine the works respectively of Johann Gottfried Herder, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Leopold von Ranke, and Wilhelm Dilthey, with focus on the interest each had in the reformer's work for its religious, and social content. The common themes found in these authors' works were: the analysis of the membership of the individual in the group, the stress on the uniqueness of individual persons and cultures, the belief that familial authority, as established in the Fourth Commandment, provided the basis for state authority, the view that the state was a necessary and benevolent institution, and, finally, the rejection of revolution as a means of instigating social change. This work explains the relationship between Luther's view of the state and its interpretation by later German scholars, providing specific examples of the way in which Herder, Hegel, Ranke, and Dilthey incorporated in their writings the reformer's theory of the state. It also argues for the continued importance of Luther to later German intellectuals in the area of social and political theory.

Duchové dějiny v kontextu české a evropské historiografie 19. a 20. století / Intellectual History in the Context of Czech and European Historiography in 19th and 20the Century

Čtvrtník, Mikuláš January 2015 (has links)
The main thematic scope and basis of the PhD thesis is the specific movement in the historiography called duchové dějiny (in English partly misleading translation intellectual history) in the form, in which it was developed in German speaking lands as Geistesgeschichte, and in the Czech historiography as duchové dějiny outlined by Zdeněk Kalista. In the PhD thesis duchové dějiny is put into the wide context of the development of historical thinking and methodology in the 19th and 20th century. The PhD thesis treats the subdiscipline of duchové dějiny in many perspectives and at different levels and thematically is not enclosed by the boundaries of the duchové dějiny itself. The duchové dějiny is here in a way an optics through which one line of historiography and historical thinking in the 19th and 20th century is observed, treated and interpreted. The PhD thesis also aims to connect the history and its methodology with the archivistics and archival theory. In this way proposes the thesis certain solutions. Nowadays, duchové dějiny belongs rather to the marginal movements or subdisciplines in the historiography in the Czech and German speaking lands, contrary to intellectual history in Anglophone areas. In spite of this the PhD thesis tried to show, that the duchové dějiny is still alive,...
