Defending the Subjective Component of Susan Wolf's "Fitting Fulfillment View" About Meaning in Life

Hjälmarö, Andreas January 2016 (has links)
In this essay, I intend to analyze and respond to criticism directed towards the subjective component of Susan Wolf’s Bi-partite “Fitting Fulfillment View”, criticism directed from Thaddeus Metz, Ben Bramble, and Aaron Smuts. Wolf offers a theory about meaning in life which considers both that the subject should find it meaningful and that the source of this meaningfulness should be objectively valuable. However, critics have argued that a subject’s attitude towards meaningfulness should not affect whether one’s life is meaningful or not. Out of the critics I found promising and responded to I did not find any that seriously threatened Wolf’s theory and, in some cases they even seem to misunderstand Wolf’s claim. In the final section, I raise a question for Wolf’s account that I believe would be interesting to pursue in a further study.

Truth and Symbolism: Mythological Perspectives of the Wolf and Crow

Bukowick, Karen Elizabeth January 2004 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Susan Michalczyk / This thesis explores crow and wolf symbolism within the mythology of Western Tradition, focusing on the Bible, Greek and Roman mythology, Native American folklore, Shakespeare, and Aesop's fables. Much of the animal imagery in literature is negative and does not truthfully represent the animals symbolized. This thesis investigates why these negative associations are formed, how they relate to the biological lives of wolves and crows, and explores their ambiguity in relation to the positive symbolism that exists. Negative symbols acquire strength as cultures grow further away from the land they live on and focus on industry and humanity instead of the world around them. The behavior of both wolves and crows is secretive, causing people to create stories to explain their actions. Furthermore, humans use these animals as a "shadow" to themselves, bestowing characteristics upon them which are found in human nature but are generally considered unacceptable. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2004. / Submitted to: Boston College. Christopher Rouse's Wolf Rounds: Compositional Insight and World Premiere Performance Preparation

Rand, Catherine A. 27 June 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to explore the commissioning process of a wind ensemble piece by notable composer Christopher Rouse, and its significance to the wind ensemble repertoire. This essay will use the University of Miami Frost Wind Ensemble and Christopher Rouse's Wolf Rounds as the primary example. This discussion will provide an extensive background review of Christopher Rouse's early musical experience and life's accomplishments. It will focus on his creative process and document the performance preparation of Wolf Rounds as experienced by the Frost Wind Ensemble, conducted by Professor Gary D. Green. The final part of this essay will investigate the compositional insight of Wolf Rounds as well as the inspiration and motivation of Rouse to write for the wind ensemble genre. While Rouse has written for many different types of ensembles, this will be his first published addition to the wind repertoire. Wolf Rounds was chosen as the primary composition because of its significance to the composer as his first composition for winds and percussion.

Layered Wyner-Ziv video coding for noisy channels

Xu, Qian 01 November 2005 (has links)
The growing popularity of video sensor networks and video celluar phones has generated the need for low-complexity and power-efficient multimedia systems that can handle multiple video input and output streams. While standard video coding techniques fail to satisfy these requirements, distributed source coding is a promising technique for ??uplink?? applications. Wyner-Ziv coding refers to lossy source coding with side information at the decoder. Based on recent theoretical result on successive Wyner-Ziv coding, we propose in this thesis a practical layered Wyner-Ziv video codec using the DCT, nested scalar quantizer, and irregular LDPC code based Slepian-Wolf coding (or lossless source coding with side information) for noiseless channel. The DCT is applied as an approximation to the conditional KLT, which makes the components of the transformed block conditionally independent given the side information. NSQ is a binning scheme that facilitates layered bit-plane coding of the bin indices while reducing the bit rate. LDPC code based Slepian-Wolf coding exploits the correlation between the quantized version of the source and the side information to achieve further compression. Different from previous works, an attractive feature of our proposed system is that video encoding is done only once but decoding allowed at many lower bit rates without quality loss. For Wyner-Ziv coding over discrete noisy channels, we present a Wyner-Ziv video codec using IRA codes for Slepian-Wolf coding based on the idea of two equivalent channels. For video streaming applications where the channel is packet based, we apply unequal error protection scheme to the embedded Wyner-Ziv coded video stream to find the optimal source-channel coding trade-off for a target transmission rate over packet erasure channel.
