Development of strategies to enhance prevention of preterm labour in the selected hospitals in Capricorn District, Limpopo Province

Makakaba, Gloria Meliddah January 2022 (has links)
Thesis (M. (Nursing)) -- University of Limpopo, 2022 / Background Despite all the interventions that have been developed previously preterm labour remain to be the leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Preterm labour occurs before 37 weeks of gestation under two obstetric circumstances namely, ‗spontaneous preterm labour‘ and ‗indicated preterm labour‘. The aim of the study was to develop the strategies to enhance prevention of preterm labour in selected hospitals in Capricorn District, Limpopo Province. Research Method A sequential explanatory mixed method was adopted, the study was conducted in three phases, namely, quantitative study, qualitative study, and development of strategies. Self-developed questionnaires with 50 item questions each for mothers and registered midwives were administered. Both questionnaires were pre-tested prior to being administered to the respondents of the main study. The sample size of mothers was 77 mothers and 62 registered midwives. Data collected from the respondents were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 25 with the help of the statistician. Tables, pie charts and bar graphs were drawn to present the results. The results of quantitative phase were utilized to formulate the Interview Guides that were used to explore the knowledge and practise of registered midwives and obstetricians regarding preterm labour. Interviews were conducted with 20 mothers, 6 registered midwives and 4 obstetricians until data saturation was reached. Data were analysed qualitatively using Tesch‘s Open-Coding method. v Quantitative Results The quantitative results for midwives revealed that about 60% of the mothers who had preterm labour were teenagers. Most of the respondents had ‗spontaneous preterm labour‘ and did not have any comorbidities while few had ‗indicated preterm labour‘ and were induced. All 62(100%) of the midwives showed that the facility does not offer an Outreach Programme on the prevention of preterm labour. Themes and Sub-Themes Results Themes and sub-themes were coded manually. Results that emerged from the integration and comparison of quantitative and qualitative results revealed that the mothers who went into preterm labour spontaneously had little information or no health education regarding preterm labour. Developed strategies The following strategies were developed based on the identified factors that might hinders the prevention of preterm labour and after exploring the knowledge and practice of midwives and obstetricians in the selected hospitals, Capricorn District, Limpopo Province. Strategies includes strengthening of BANC Plus, staff establishment, laboratory turnaround time, outreach programmes and improvement of counselling and support services. Recommendations of the Study The recommendation of the study is divided into three groups which includes recommendations for midwives at the PHC and hospital, recommendations for the obstetricians at the hospital and the recommendations for the Department of Health. The midwives to visit schools and community centres at least twice in a month to give information to the woman of childbearing age and reinforce health education on each Antenatal Care visit. The obstetricians to screen all mothers who are at risk of preterm labour for infections, follow up the results and treat the mothers accordingly. The Department of Health should hire enough staff so that quality care can be vi rendered to the pregnant woman at the PHC and hospital. The Department of Health should develop the electronic database, to register all mothers who have a history of preterm labour, so that when they are pregnant the database system will also help to identify them at the PHC, and they would then be referred to the hospital in time. If the developed strategies to enhance prevention of preterm labour may be adopted and adhered to by the midwives and obstetricians, these may help in reduction of high figures of preterm labour in the selected hospitals.

Sexual harassment in the workplace : a gendered inequality

Malatjie, Khomotso Rosina January 2022 (has links)
Thesis (LLM. (Labour Law)) -- University of Limpopo, 2022 / Sexual harassment remains an issue in the workplace as result of ineffective legislative and other measures that fail to recognise sexual harassment as a form of discrimination that is gender orientated. Gender inequality is credited as one of the contributors of sexual harassment, as more women than men suffer sexual harassment in the workplace. Moreover, sexual harassment has adverse effects on the individual who is on the receiving end of it, which are psychological in nature. This alone may lead to the abuse of substances as a form of coping mechanism, to arriving late to work or quitting which also affects productivity. In an attempt to confront the issue of sexual harassment, laws were created over the years, both at national and international level. Although some countries show efficiency in the creation of these laws by responding with urgency, some countries have had a more difficult time formulating appropriate and effective laws, with some countries having very little laws aimed at combatting sexual harassment in the workplace. At the same time workplace sexual harassment policies have proven to be an effective weapon against the gendered inequality that is sexual harassment if implemented effectively.

Positive Muslims: a critical analysis of Muslim AIDS activism in relation to women living with HIV/AIDS in Cape Town.

Ahmed, Abdul Kayum January 2003 (has links)
This research critically analysed Muslim approaches to five women with HIV/AIDS in Cape Town focussing particularly on the approach of 'Positive Muslims' - an awareness-raising and support group for Muslims living with HIV/AIDS. The central question of this thesis dealt with the impact of the norms, values and practices of Cape Muslims on the approach of Positive Muslims to women living with HIV/AIDS. It is suggested that while norms and values articulated in religious texts inform the ideological approach of the organisation's AIDS prevention model. This is due to the pragmatic approach adopted by Postive Muslims which recognises that the articulated norms and values do not always conform to the practices of Cape Muslims.

Perceptions of HIV/AIDS-related stigma among Muslims in a Cape Town community.

Abrahams, Shahieda January 2006 (has links)

South Africa has the largest percentage of people living with HIV/AIDS in the world. However, the response against the further spread of HIV/AIDS in the country is being hindered by stigma and discrimination. In order to develop effective intervention programmes to control and reduce the further spread of the disease, it is first important to understand the nature of HIV/AIDS-related stigma and especially how people construct it. In the present study, the social construction of HIV/AIDS-related stigma among Muslims was investigated because high levels of stigma were found in this group. This was fuelled partly by the belief that HIV/AIDS was not a serious problem amongst Muslims. Two focus groups were conducted, one among Muslim women only and the second among Muslim men only. The main aim of the study was to examine the perceptions of HIV/AIDS-related stigma among Muslims. The transcripts were analyzed using thematic content analysis to determine the themes that emerged from the research material. The main findings of the study included that Muslims&rsquo / religious identity/positioning was the most salient discourse that informed how they understood, made meaning of, and responded to HIV/AIDS. They engaged in various forms of stigma such as &lsquo / othering&rsquo / , and mediating factors of stigma included religious positioning. Stigma also served as a social barrier to VCT and disclosure of HIV status. However, supportive attitudes and behaviours were also evident. The findings yielded useful insights into possible elements of intervention programmes, both to reduce HIV/AIDS-related stigma, and also to encourage behavioural change in order to control and reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS in this community.

The motherhood penalty : exploration mothering experience as a pathway to crime for women incarcerated in the Johannesburg Female Correctional Centre

Parry, Bianca 25 September 2018 (has links)
Text in English, abstract in English, Zulu and Afrikaans / Globally there has been a rise in the population of incarcerated women over recent decades. Yet, despite this increase, female offenders only represent about 5% of the total incarcerated population. South Africa is no different – female offenders on average total less than 3% of the incarcerated population in South Africa, one of the ten largest correctional systems in the world. This small representation of women in the correctional system often leads to the interpretation that their pathways to offending and experiences of incarceration are the same as those of male offenders, delegitimising any role that gender may play in offending behaviour. The research topic of this doctoral study aims to investigate whether these women’s symbolic or pragmatic status as mothers motivated their crimes and how this occurrence may argue that the socioeconomic challenges faced by these women play a role in their criminalisation. By utilising a feminist pathways research approach, the unlawful actions of seventeen women incarcerated in the Johannesburg Female Correctional Centre is contextualised and reveals conduits to women’s incarceration that primarily involve victimisation and socially constructed “gendered vulnerabilities” that are indissolubly interconnected with poverty and oppression. As seen through their life history narratives, this confluence of factors, coupled with fulfilling the dual roles of provider and caregiver as a mother, contribute to their pathway to offending. Ultimately the research allows for a gender-sensitive analysis of the unique challenges incarcerated women in South Africa face, and the role agency and patriarchy has played in their pathways taken. / Isihloko: Inhlawulo yokuba ngumama – ukuhlolisisa izimo zokuba ngomama okudlula kuzo abantu besifazane baseNingizimu Afrika ababoshiwe njengento ewumzila obaholela ekwephuleni umthetho. / Psychology / D. Being a woman and HIV positive in Soweto : a challenge to the church.

Myeni, Ethel Zandile. January 2007 (has links)
The main aim of this study was to explore the extent of freedom or lack thereof in the relationships of HIV positive pregnant women and their partners. These women were attending antenatal care in two Soweto clinics, run by the Perinatal HIV Research Unit. A semi-structured interview schedule was developed and used as the data collection tool. A theoretical framework based on Amartya Sen's theory of Development as Freedom and Isabel Apawo Phiri's theological reflections on women's freedom, was used to analyze data collected from the participants of the study. The ideas of the two theorists complemented each other with regard to the sources of "unfreedom" for women from an economic point of view and from the cultural and religious points of view. Sen highlighted lack of basic freedoms and human rights as the core causes of lack of freedom, which is both a primary means and principal ends of development. Phiri advocated for the liberation of women from the oppressive cultural and religious practices brought about by patriarchy. Removal of all those key sources of unfreedom would provide an ideal situation in which women would be less vulnerable to HIV infection. The analysis of the participants' responses in this study suggested a lack of freedom in their relationships with the fathers of their unborn babies. This had an adverse effect in their ability to disclose their HIV positive status, negotiate safer sex and contraception. Economic dependency on the partners was found to be the major cornerstone that kept women in bondage in their relationships. The churches in Soweto did not seem to have any plausible impact in the lives of the participants and as a result all of them had very loose links with the church. This was another major gap in the initiatives to reduce HIV infection which challenges the churches in Soweto to strengthen their prophetic ministry in terms of women's freedom and their dignity both in the church and in society. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2007

The experiences, challenges and coping strategies of women residing around the mining communities : the case of Driekop community, Limpopo Province, South Africa

Lekwadu, Maelane Irene 31 July 2020 (has links)
The plight of women who reside around the mining communities has not received the necessary attention from a research perspective. This concern prompted the researcher to compose a qualitative research aimed at exploring the experiences and challenges faced by these women. This was a case study research which was conducted among women who reside around the Driekop mining community in Limpopo province and designed from exploratory, descriptive, contextual and phenomenological in designs. The study was guided by the two theories: the feminist theory and the coping theory of Lazarus and Folkman. Relevant research ethical principles were upheld during the plenary phase wherein the research proposal was subjected to review by the Higher Degrees Committee of the UNISA’s Social Work Departmental Research and Ethics Committee and throughout the duration of the study. The data which was collected through the semi-structured interviews was analysed using Braun and Clarke’s six steps of data analysis, gave rise to several experiences and challenges which are presented in a form of nine themes and 13 subthemes. In striving to assure research quality, Guba and Lincoln’s trustworthiness principles were adopted. Some conclusions are drawn from the process of qualitative research as an approach adopted to guide the study as well as the findings based on the collected and analysed data. Based on the conclusions of the research process and the research findings, the reader’s attention is drawn to some recommendations which are proposed to inform practice, training and policy development. / Social Work / M.A. (Social Work)
