Over the years, this struggle for equal rights, has built a significant image of women's representation in society, which seeks to overcome traditional and stereotypical images, arising from patriarchal and chauvinistic forces. The construction of this change is the result of much criticism and theoretical elaborations by the academic community, interested in cultural studies and post-structuralist, he began to think critically about gender issues, and more specifically on the position and representation of women in sociocultural context. Therefore, understanding the analytical category of gender, took to the society, the recognition of a variety of forms of interpretation, symbolization and organization of sex differences in social relations, outlining a critical discourse that is also spread by the communication sciences, especially cinema. In this perspective, the intent of this research is to present a study on the image of women in Brazilian cinematography of films directed by women between 2002 and 2012. The films were selected and categorized according to a summary sheet in three different categories, movies that reinforce the woman's identity, films that question the identity of the woman and movies that deconstruct the identity of the woman and, before that, seeks to present a reflection that goes... The relationship between womanist identity attitudes, cultural identity, and acculturation to Asian American women's self-esteem

Alarcon, Maria Cielo B. January 1997 (has links)
The current study examined the interrelationships among womanist identity, cultural identity, acculturation, and self-esteem in 74 Asian American women who are currently enrolled in or who have graduated from a college or university in the United States. It was hypothesized that Internalization attitudes, cultural identity, and acculturation would predict self-esteem among Asian American women. It was also hypothesized that cultural identity (Ethnic Identification) and acculturation would be negatively correlated with each other. Results of the simultaneous multiple regression analysis indicated that Internalization attitudes and cultural identity were both significant predictors of self-esteem. Asian American women with higher levels of Internalization attitudes had higher levels of self-esteem, consistent with Ossana, Helms, and Leonard's (1992) study. Asian American women with higher levels of Marginal attitudes had lower levels of self-esteem. Results, however, yielded no significant relationship between acculturation and self-esteem. A correlational analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between cultural identity (Ethnic Identification) and acculturation, confirming Lee's (1988) assertion that acculturation decreases cultural identity. / Department of Counseling Psychology and Guidance Services

An explorative study on narratives and subjective meanings of black economically empowered women (BEEW) about black men's perceptions about BEEW

Ratshefola, Mapule January 2016 (has links)
The primary focus of the research is to explore the narratives and subjective meanings of black economically empowered women (BEEW) about black men’s perceptions about BEEW. The researcher explored the experiences of these women and identified some of the challenges that they may face as a result of such experiences. The theoretical frameworks used are based on the theories of empowerment and the Black Feminist theories, with both attempting to explore black women’s experiences. This study is exploratory and qualitative in nature, with the focus on the BEEW’s subjective experiences which were gathered from each of the individuals who participated in this study. The interviews conducted were individual and face-to-face. The purposive sampling method was used to select the participants and all ethical considerations such as confidentiality and informed consent were taken into account. The findings of the research suggest that BEEW tend to have similar experiences in relation to most black men perceiving them as threatening and emasculating. Many participants also experienced both internal and external struggles as a result of their economic empowerment. In addition, the study also suggests that most BEEW are not intending to emasculate men, but are rather searching for relationships that are collaborative and that acknowledge each other’s strengths. Due to the small sample, generalizability of this study is limited. / MT2016

Women and Improvisation: Transgression, Transformation and Transcendence

Sears, Linda R. (Linda Roseanne) 08 1900 (has links)
This feminist study examines women's use of improvisation in discovering, creating, and articulating various self-identities. To create a theory of identity formation, two feminist theoretical position, essentialism and poststructuralism, are analyzed and merged. This hybrid theory addresses the interplay between the self and society that women must recognize in order to form satisfying identities. Improvisational practices, involving bodily awareness and movement, are demonstrated to have the potential for helping women to actualize themselves in these various identities. For this study, the writer uses her experience as an improviser and interviews three women who use improvisation in their choreographic processes. She also discusses performers whom she has seen and performers about whom feminist performance critics have written. This study examines improvisation in dance and performance art from a feminist perspective. I clarify what improvisation entails and, by doing so, illustrate how improvisational movement in dance and performance art can enhance the lives of women as viewers and performers. Through exploring improvisation from this feminist perspective, I demonstrate the psychological insights I have gained from practicing improvisation and document performances that have been improvisationally inspired by women who feel dissatisfied with the manner in which this society shapes and limits their identities.

We based this work in referencial chains, emphasizing strategies of the textual referential and the observation of the linguistic choices made by text producers. In order to analyse the data identified, it was considered the language and referral from the perspective of social cognitive interaction, in which both are understood as a discursive activity that happens throughout the relations between subjects, considering the social universe where they act. We verified that categorized and (re)categorized strategies allow us to see in the analyzed texts the subjectivity and women identity representation in violence situations. The referentiation indicated that elements of subjectivity could be highlighted or deleted depending on the linguistic choices operated by the text producer. These choices are taken according to particular intentions and factors of social and cultural choices. Regarding women representation, we found that it is determined by the difference or opposition to the man. Our results indicated the elements of referentiation portray women and violence forms committed, are done in order to draw social attention to a common and worrying practice, colaboranting to rethink some attitudes, beliefs and collective values.

"We Flawless": Black and Latina Adolescent Girls' Readings of Femininity in Pop Culture

Hood, Mia January 2018 (has links)
This study discusses how adolescent Black and Latina girls read the femininities made available in pop culture texts and how they take up those femininities when they narrate personal experiences. The purpose of the study is to explore how girls engage in pop culture on an ongoing basis, how these everyday engagements shape their understandings of themselves as girls, and how these engagements are themselves performances that both maintain and threaten the boundaries between boy and girl. In addition, this study witnesses the deconstruction of those meanings (Derrida, 1967/1997), exploring how attempts to make femininity mean something ultimately undermines itself. As pop culture has come to saturate everyday life, American schools, following the Common Core State Standards’ (NGA, 2010) mandate for curriculum driven by “sufficiently complex,” canonical texts, have narrowed the scope and purposes of literacy instruction in schools. This research serves as a starting point for curricula that support young people in making sense of pop culture and their relationship to it. Situated within a poststructural feminist theoretical framework, this study uses qualitative methods to make the literacy processes through which girls make sense of pop culture texts visible and to elicit narrations of the personal experiences in which girls take up the femininities made available pop culture texts. The findings suggested that girls make sense of these femininities by reading both in-narrative and out-of-narrative—standing back from the text and treating it as a text. In their readings and discussions of pop culture texts, the girls cited and inscribed discourses of femininity, constituting themselves as respectable girls by deliberately making judgments about women’s physical appearance on screen. Specifically, they acted to draw a line between what they saw as appropriate and what they saw as inappropriate. This repetitive act was one way they performed respectable femininity, stabilizing discursive meanings of gender and also holding open the possibility of the line being placed differently. The findings also suggested that storytelling as a site of discursive agency as the distance between the moment of experience and the moment of narration held open the possibility of reformulation and renegotiation of meanings.
