Log-diversity and abundance of dead wood dependent bracket fungi and bryophytes, a comparison between spruce woodland key habitats and adjacent production forests in Östergötland, Sweden.

Dead wood in forests are essential habitat for a wide range of fungal, insects, lichens and bryophyte species. The main threat to dead wood dependent species is lack of substrate, which aggravates their ability to reach and colonize a new substrate. Inventories of woodland key habitats (WKHs) is a method to map forests with high biological value in Sweden, and these areas may benefit dead wood dependent species. The aim of this study was to compare spruce dominated WKHs with adjacent production spruce forests (APFs), regarding (1) log diversity, (2) log characteristics and (3) abundance of selected species on logs. The study was conducted in Östergötland County in Sweden, seven spruce WKHs (≥ 60% spruce) and seven APFs of three different types (two clear-cuts, two dominated by trees < 20 cm and three dominated by trees > 20 cm) were investigated. Data of eight wood dependent species (three bryophytes and five bracket fungi), log diversity, six log characteristics and two environmental factors were collected. In a total area of 4.27 ha, 210 logs (105 logs in WKH and APF each) were studied and the results show that there were significantly higher amount of coarse logs, distribution area of species, number of logs/ha, diameter, decay class and humidity inside WKHs compared with APFs. The total distribution area of species was approximately 85% larger in WKHs. Bark cover was slightly less in WKHs and sun exposure was significantly higher and humidity was lower in clear-cuts. According to the current study, WKHs are important for conservation of wood depending species due to the higher amount and diversity of coarse dead wood. Furthermore, it is necessary to put aside larger amount of coarse dead wood inside production forests, together with changed logging techniques to increase the suitable substrate for dead wood dependent species.

VĮ Kauno miškų urėdijos kertinių miško buveinių ekonominis įvertinimas alternatyviųjų kaštų metodu / Evaluation of Woodland Key Habitats under the Method of Alternative Costs in Kaunas State Forest Enterprise

Magistro darbe tiriama kertinių miško buveinių vertė alternatyviųjų kaštų metodu Darbo objektas – Kauno miškų urėdijos, girininkijų kertinės miško buveinės. Darbo tikslas – alternatyviųjų kaštų metodu įvertinti VĮ Kauno miškų urėdijos negaunamas pajamas dėl kertinių miško buveinių įsteigimo bei šių buveinių medieninės funkcijos kapitalizuotos vertės sumažėjimą dėl taikomų ūkinės veiklos apribojimų. Darbo metodai – Ištisinis statistinis metodas – duomenų apie kertines miško buveines rinkimui bei apdorojimui, alternatyviųjų kaštų metodas - kertinių miško buveinių ekonominiams skaičiavimams, taikant Faustmano miško žemės vertės formulę, naudojant MS EXCEL skaičiuoklę. Darbo rezultatai. Iš 1 ha kertinių miško buveinių dėl ūkinės veiklos apribojimų negaunamos vidutinės metinės pajamos svyruoja nuo 66 Lt/ha drebulynuose iki 208 Lt/ha ąžuolynuose. Negaunamų pajamų vertę labiausiai lemia vyraujanti medžių rūšis, esamas tūris ir medyno amžius. Vidutinės prarandamos metinės pajamos iš 1ha - 156 Lt. Visame kertinių miško buveinių plote vidutinės metinės prarandamos pajamos sudaro 205885 Lt. Dėl negaunamų pajamų sumažėja kapitalizuota medynų, patekusių į kertines miško buveines, vertė. Vertinant pagal Faustmano miško žemės vertės skaičiavimo metodą, visų kertinių buveinių kapitalizuota medieninės funkcijos vertė sumažėja 21,3 mln. Lt (vidutiniškai 24,7 tūkst. Lt/ha), lyginant su IV miškų grupei taikomu ūkiniu režimu. Tokia didelė vertė gali būti paaiškinta didele brandžių ąžuolynų... The object of the work – Kaunas state forests, woodland key habitat of state forests. The aim of the work – to evaluate decrease of annual income from timber and capitalized value of the stands in woodland key habitats in Public Institution Kaunas state forest enterprise because of restrictions applied to woodland key habitats. Methods of the work – continuous statistic method was used for collecting and processing data of woodland key habitat, alternative costs method was used for economic calculations of woodland key habitat applying Faustan formula of forest land value, using MS EXCEL spreadsheet. The results of the work. Average value of revenues of woodland key habitats of 1ha fluctuates according to dominant types of trees from 66 Lt/ha in aspen stands to 208 Lt/ha in oak stands. The value mostly depends on dominating tree species, age and volume of the stand. The average decrease of average annual revenues is 156 Lt/ha. The total average annual income lost by enterprise is 205885 Lt. Decrease of capitalised timbeer supply value of stands in woodland key habitats is as high as 21.3 mill. Lt, or 24.7 thou. Lt/ha, comparing to management practice applied to stands of IV forest group. Such a high value can be explained by big share of mature oak stands in woodland key habitats. Comparing to previous management regime, the decrease of the value is 13.8 mill. Lt.

Prospects for Wind Energy Development in Consideration of a Cumulative Appraisal of Botanical, Faunal, Societal, and Cultural Values in Swedish Boreal Forests

Renewable energy development is breaking global records each year. European and national Swedish legislation target substantial portions of wind energy production by 2040. Sweden has ambitious objectives for wind energy, with plans to nearly triple its wind energy proportion in the next 17 years. However, expanding wind energy also requires using forest lands, which raises concerns for biodiversity and landscape fragmentation. The objective of this study is to determine the values impacted by wind energy development in the Swedish boreal forest to identify appropriate low-impact locations for the construction of Wind Turbine Generators (WTG). The study employs an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and a Weighted Overlay Analysis (WOA) to categorise potential areas for WTG deployment. Twenty-four input constraints are distributed into six categories and analysed in three stages, resulting in a suitability map and a numerical data output. The analysis conducted across six northern boreal counties indicates that significant parts of northern Sweden are unsuitable for wind energy development due to insufficient wind speeds and numerous water bodies. Cultural and botanical value areas further limit some areas' potential for wind energy development. The findings indicate that 25.85% of the northernmost six counties are viable for constructing wind energy facilities, surpassing the national target area for renewable energy by a considerable margin. The research indicates that forested boreal counties in Sweden provide significant potential for the sustainable development of wind energy, whilst preserving biodiversity and avoiding interference with faunal, societal, and cultural values.
