Kid's Music Box: A Digital Music Organizer Designed with Children for Children

Zhang, Edmond January 2007 (has links)
This thesis is an investigation of software development for children aged six to ten years old. This is a challenging area; despite the trend for children to be exposed to computer technology at an earlier age, they often struggle to utilize it effectively. Children are not merely miniature adults; they have their own needs which are often not met by traditional software. In particular, this thesis focuses on the task of music management: a task that children take much interest in but for which they are given few tools. We address this with the design of a new music management system: the Kid's Music Box. The development of Kid's Music Box is documented in four main parts: background research, requirements gathering, design and implementation, and evaluation. Background research identifies the strengths and weaknesses of conventional music organizers with respect to young users. Requirements gathering took the form of a focus group study, which aimed to overcome the distinct challenges of obtaining input from children. The design of Kid's Music Box builds on this work, by incorporating functionality, metaphors and design elements that suit the needs and capabilities of young children. Expert evaluations and formal evaluation from children users showed promising results, which concluded that Kid's Music Box is better than other organizers in terms of managing music for children.

Sjuksköterskorserfarenheter av att arbeta med barn med rädsla för nålrelaterade procedurer : En kvalitativ intervjustudie / Nurses’ experiences of working with children with fear of needle-related procedures

Råsbjer, Linda, Davidsson, Jenny January 2022 (has links)
Background: Nurses within pediatric care often meet children who experience pain and fear during needle-related procedures (NRP). This makes it important to work according to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which looks after the best interests of the child. Childrens’ management of pain and fear in NRPs is usually facilitated with information, distraction and parental support. Pediatric nursing can be complex which is challenging for the unexperienced nurse. Experience and knowledge are important when meeting a child tobe able to create the best conditions for the child.Motive: Nurses without further education are very common in pediatric care since there is a shortage of specially trained pediatric nurses. Previous studies on children expressing fear of NRP focus on methods to help these children. Research about how nurses with limited experience in pediatric care treat these children is more difficult to find. Therefore, this study highlights nurses’ experiences and need for support regarding children expressing fear during NRP.Aim: Nurses’ experiences of working with children with fear of needle-related procedures. Methods: Nurses with limited experience in pediatric care who worked in the outpatient or inpatient care participated in individual, semistructured interviews. The interviews were analyzed using a qualitative manifest content analysis.Result: The result led to three main categories; “Manage emotional encounters”, “Creating the best conditions for the child” and “Get experiential knowledge in a complex area”.Conclusion: It is important that the nurse feels comfortable to create the best conditions for children who express fear of NRPs. The unexperienced nurse needs to be introduced and trained in the subject. Experience and collegial support make it easier for the nurse to succeed with an NRP where the child express fear.

Vilniaus NVO, dirbančių su rizikos grupės vaikais, veikla stiprinant socialinę sanglaudą / The Activity of Vilnius Non-governmental Organizations Working with Children at Risk in Strenghtening Social Cohesion

Šiaudvytis, Albinas 20 March 2006 (has links)
The activity of Vilnius non-governmental organisations (NGO’s) working with children at risk while strengthening social cohesion is analysed in the research work. The problems of children at risk are multiplying and public institutions need help of NGO’s. General characteristics of NGO’s are reviewed and systematised in the theoretical part of the work. The legal regulation and topics of activity in strengthening social cohesion are presented in this part as well. Besides the analysis of social exclusion and its factors, the situation of children at risk in Lithuania is described and the politics of Lithuanian government in regard to children at risk is discussed.
