The developmental influence of collaborative games in the Grade 6 mathematics classroom

Van Coller, Angelique January 2017 (has links)
This study investigated the developmental influence of collaborative games in the Grade 6 mathematics classroom. Development in areas such as awareness of mathematics, confidence, competence, curiosity, love for mathematics, appreciation of mathematics, creativity, recognition of mathematics, understanding, and knowledge and skills was investigated. The following three data collection methods were used: intervention, observations, and interviews. For the intervention, a quasi-experimental design was used to assign two out of four classes to an experimental group, and the other two to a comparison group. Fifty-one Grade 6 learners participated in the intervention, which covered the following four mathematics topics: multiplication, nets of 3D-objects, symmetry, and division. Each topic included a pre-test and post-test, with learners being observed during the completion of the post-tests. For the posttests, the comparison group completed the textbook activities individually as they usually would. The experimental group completed the same activities, but in a gamebased worksheet format while collaborating in heterogeneous pairs. The results revealed that the experimental group increased 4.28% more from the pretests to the post-tests than the comparison group. This implies that there was a developmental difference, which can be ascribed to the implementation of collaborative game-based worksheets. The Game Object Model, which was the framework used in this study, provided essential information regarding designing educational games that are conducive to learners’ mathematical development. The experimental group increased the most in multiplication and division, which required skills in routine procedures. Low-achieving learners benefited the most from collaborating in heterogeneous pairs in their achievement in mathematics. The experimental group showed a high level of collaboration as they helped each other frequently. A need for support was noted in the comparison group when they asked for assistance from the teacher or a group leader according to the classroom seating arrangements, even though they were instructed to complete the activity individually. Although collaborative games have positively influenced learners’ development in mathematics, observations also show that the teacher plays an important role in learners’ development in mathematics with regard to focus, motivation, and stirring up a love for mathematics in the learners. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2017. / Science, Mathematics and Technology Education / MEd / Unrestricted

In the third part I'm dealing with the analysis of questionnaire and according to the availably gained information with the creation of my own worksheets. After the questionnaire there were nine worksheets with the concrete teaching methodology of botany and methodological worksheets. Afterwards the worksheet called ¨Excursion itself¨ was verified. Altogether nine worksheets with the methodological outcomes were created. The pupils were filling in the worksheets during the excursion and then the pupils' questionnaire was made to gain the feedback. Botanická zahrada Teplice a její využití při výuce na střední škole / The Botanical Garden Teplice and its Use in Education at High School

Frolík, Svatopluk January 2019 (has links)
The main aim of the thesis was to create functional and practical worksheets that would be used on excursions by secondary school students to the Botanical Garden Teplice. Based on a study of secondary school textbooks, questions were created that repeated subject matter taught at the school, but also expanded it. The questions were incorporated into three types of worksheets dealing with phytogeography, outdoor exhibits and greenhouse exhibits. Guides were created for each type of worksheet to help the person accompanying students, who can be both an employee of the Botanical Garden or a teacher. The test versions of the worksheets were tried out on 131 students from four secondary schools during field trips. The results obtained by completing the worksheets were analysed to identify the shortcomings of questions. This and substantive comments by the supervisor led to an amendment of the questions that required it, resulting in the final version of the worksheets to be used for educational activities at the Botanical Garden Teplice. Keywords Worksheets, phytogeography, Botanical Garden Teplice, guide.

Exkurze po březích řeky Vrchlice, zaměřené na dřeviny, se žáky základní školy / The Field Trip on the Banks of the River Vrchlice Focused on Woody Plants with the Pupils of Secondary School

Nováková, Jana January 2018 (has links)
I chose the topic for my diploma thesis " The Excursion for the Elementary School Pupils along the Riverside of the Vrchlice River Aiming at Woody Plants". I took that topic intentionally just for several reasons. I wanted to bring a scenic valley of the Vrchlice river to pupilsˇ attention, to make the identification of woody plants more attractive in the natural scientific excursion, and to consolidate pupils' relation to nature and neighbouring environment. The first theoretical part deals with the general description of this valley and at the same time with the characteristic of animals and plants. Selected sorts of woody plants are described in the most detailed way as they became initial ones for working out worksheets and for the natural scientific excursion. The next part of the diploma thesis concerns inquiry research the goal of which was to find out the interest of teachers from nearby basic schools in worksheets dealing with the woody plants issues of the river Vrchlice. Worksheets dealing with selected wooden plants were elaborated on the basis of the research assessment. Those worksheets were verifield in the follow-up excursion. The closing part evaluates whether all the set targets were accomplished. Keywords Woody plants, educational excursion, worksheets, plants, pupils
