A study of the personality differences between altruistic and non-altruistic adolescents

Dobbs, Linda L. January 1973 (has links)
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the personality differences between altruistic and nonaltruistic adolescents. A secondary purpose was to compare the two measures employed in assessing altruism, and to determine whether or not altruistic behavior differed as a function of sex and socio-economic groups. One hundred eighty junior high school students were subjects for the experiment. Each subject was administered an author adapted version of the Mf 3 Scale from the MMPI (Minnesota Multaphasic Personality Inventory), made a voluntary monetary contribution to the March of Dimes, and was then administered the Junior Senior High School Personality Questionnaire. A small but significant correlation was found between the adapted Mf 3 Scale and the March of Dimes donation, and significant personality variables were found to differentiate altruistic from non-altruistic adolescents. No differences were found in altruistic behavior as a function of sex and socio-economic status. Recommendations were made for further research, and research findings were discussed with their implications for education, counseling, and the identification of potentially helpful people.

Mngadi, Nompumelelo Rosemary. January 2004 (has links)
The study investigates youth perceptions of their relationships with adults in Ugu North a rural area in Southern Kwa-Zulu Natal. A review of literature revealed that limited research has been done in South Africa and other countries on the nature of relationships that exist between youth and adults in rural areas. From the available literature and the study it became clear that there is no comfortable relationship between youth and adults in Ugu North rural area. Research was conducted at a school and the participants were the learners. The researcher used availability sampling and systematic random sample to select participants. The researcher used two methods of data collection - focus group discussions and questionnaires for individual completion. The study revealed that there is no comfortable relationship between youth and adults in rural areas. By adults the research is referring to parents, teachers, possible caregivers and community members. Conclusions are drawn from the study and recommendations are made on how relationships between youth and adults in rural areas can be improved. / Thesis (M.Soc.Sc.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2004.

Tatum, Carol Baskin 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of a teaching unit for improving self-esteem in high school students. To measure the level of self-esteem, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was chosen. The data were compiled from twenty-one high school students in a rural Texas high school. The female level of self-esteem was significantly lower than the male self-esteem level prior to studying the class unit. There were no significant differences in levels of self-esteem on the pretest and post test, although there was a slight improvement in the female level.
