The results gotten in the initial stage of the research -quantitative - had allowed the aiming of the following stage - qualitative. Interviews half-structuralized with eight students of the 30 had been carried through that they had answered to Test AUDIT. The results of the related test had shown that, little more than 83% present standard of consumption of low risk. The transcription and analysis of the interviews had allowed a deepening in the universe of these students, where it was possible to apprehend part of its knowledge and attitudes with relation to the alcohol, and the identification of the factors of vulnerability and empowerment. The orientation necessity was clear, to the adults who coexist young and children, on the curses of the alcoholic beverage use and on the necessity of a bigger attention to those situations that come to facilitate its use. It was possible also to perceive the importance of the family as factor of support to the behavior of these young. How much to the pertaining to school environment, it was verified that it lacks to preparation to the educators and professionals of the health, and a bigger reflection on the part of all the society, so that the question of the alcoholic beverage consumption is faced as catalytic of sad future consequences for children and young. The educative work must exceed the field of the information and the university must dare and go beyond the knowledge technician, for the integral formation of the diverse professionals who for it pass.

An investigation of different approaches to the prevention of alcohol abuse among black adolescents : a community based partnership approach.

Nkonzo-Mtembu, Lulama Lorraine. January 1994 (has links)
According to Amos (1989) the use of, and the attitudes towards alcohol amongst young people in Africa is an area about which little is known but which has potentially major health implications. Neither has much been done about primary prevention in this field. The case studies which included a participatory research was conducted among three groups of people in the Clermont Township near Durban in the Natal Region. The aim of the research was to describe alcohol abuse as a social problem among the black adolescents and to compare and contrast the implementation of alcohol abuse prevention strategies that were and are used by the different groups of people in their community. The case study approach documented the work of each community. All the three groups of people who participated in the research agreed that alcohol abuse was a problem in their community. They described factors in their township which were contributory to the alcohol problems in their community and described the various cycles of negative effects and consequences to the individual, family and to the community. They agreed that in the past alcohol was not a problem in the traditional African society because of cultural and economic factors. Most interesting was the serious effects all groups described alcohol abuse amongst both teachers and the pupils in the Black education system. Each group planned, implemented and evaluated a unique alcohol preventive strategy. While the youth group maintained a strong alcohol focus with an educational programme, both the adult groups moved into the more general issues of economic empowerment. All three groups also used the participation and capacity building. The willingness to get involved, and to address the problems of the groups were remarkable. The following were the research conclusions: * Material resources were relatively available in this community. * Health professionals were available in this community, but they did not follow the Comprehensive Primary Health Care approach and were not involved in community development. * Integrated drinking seemed to be in harmony with the values of these groups and could be used in the alcohol abuse prevention. An integrative, multi-faceted and comprehensive community based partnership approach was used to the multi-causal alcohol abuse prevention programmes and strategies. This strategy was successful in involving community partners and leading to the solving of the actual problems and the development of positive health behaviours. The research revealed that the development projects needed "seed money" to initiate and to maintain. Alcohol abuse prevention can be used as a vehicle to enter a community and to engage it in a health directed partnership. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Natal, 1995.

Changes in Alcoholic Beverage Choice and Risky Drinking among Adolescents in Europe 1999–2019

Loy, Johanna K., Seitz, Nicki-Nils, Bye, Elin K., Dietze, Paul, Kilian, Carolin, Manthey, Jakob, Raitasalo, Kirsimarja, Soellner, Renate, Trolldal, Björn, Törrönen, Jukka, Kraus, Ludwig 04 May 2023 (has links)
This paper explores trends in beverage preference in adolescents, identifies related regional differences, and examines cluster differences in key drinking measures. Data were obtained from the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD), covering 24 European countries between 1999 and 2019. Trends in the distribution of alcoholic beverages on the participants’ most recent drinking occasion were analysed by sex and country using fractional multinomial logit regression. Clusters of countries based on trends and predicted beverage proportions were compared regarding the prevalence of drinkers, mean alcohol volume and prevalence of heavy drinking. Four distinct clusters each among girls and boys emerged. Among girls, there was not one type of beverage that was preferred across clusters, but the proportion of cider/alcopops strongly increased over time in most clusters. Among boys, the proportion of beer decreased, but was dominant across time in all clusters. Only northern European countries formed a geographically defined region with the highest prevalence of heavy drinking and average alcohol volume in both genders. Adolescent beverage preferences are associated with mean alcohol volume and heavy drinking at a country-level. Future approaches to drinking cultures need to take subpopulations such as adolescents into account.

Koler, Peter 14 May 2013 (has links)
This paper aims to examine identity-related experiences of adolescents without confirmed diagnosis regarding their episodes of alcohol consumption and excessive drinking. The core assumption was that there is a connection between the participation in consumption scenes, alcohol scenes in particular, and the identity development of a young adult. The underlying questions of the study were the following: What are the reasons for the consumption of psychoactive substances in today’s 15 to 25-year-olds? How do consumers themselves value and assess their episodes of excessive drinking? What are the subjective and group-specific reasons for the participation in consumption behavior, which can be considered as dangerous and health damaging by people that are not involved? Qualitative and quantitative approaches were applied in the study. The core issue of the research consists of the analysis – based on the Grounded Theory Method – of 19 half-standardized, topic-related interviews with 23 young male and female subjects aged 14 to 20 experienced in consumption and inebriation. The empirical part of the study refers to the situation in South Tyrol. The quantitative part focuses on the change in consumption preferences of the population of 15 to 25-year-olds over the last eight years and on the correlation between consumption behavior and existential orientation. This paper can also be considered an attempt to show the perspective of the people concerned. The findings of the study clearly and unequivocally indicate that alcohol scenes provide important stimuli for the identity development and consolidation that adolescents need on their way to their adult life. These scenes are self-contrived and self-organized and can help adolescents to let go of their childhood and to find their own self. They teach participants to competently handle key situations. After some years, they develop a critical reflecting ability through their participation and they distance themselves from the scenes. The frequently encountered ambivalences also show that alcohol scenes are artificial worlds and do not represent the optimal and ideal places for this transitional period. Alcohol scenes take over this function because of the fact that adults have taken leave of this place. Since time memorial, a young people’s essential task has been that of finding their own place in the social fabric and second modernity has not provided appropriate “software” for the present living conditions yet.
