Climbing walls, making bridges : capoeira, parkour and children of immigrants' identity negotiations in Turin's public spacesDe Martini Ugolotti, Nicola January 2016 (has links)
This thesis illustrates the relationship between body and space in the process of identity construction amongst groups of young men of migrant origins between 16 and 21 practicing capoeira and parkour in Turin's public spaces. Urban spaces in contemporary Turin, Italy, are contested sites where competing images of society, politics and citizenship are (re)produced and negotiated. While at a national level, widespread xenophobic discourses define immigrants and their children as alien bodies in Italian cities, Turin leaderships and cultural entrepreneurs aiming to attract visitors and capital investments have based the city's urban renewal on an image of multiculturalism and inclusiveness. The intersection of such discourses shapes the manifold ways through which immigrant bodies, and identities, become valorised, pathologised and essentialised in Turin. Based on fourteen months of ethnographic research conducted with a multi-method qualitative approach, this study explores how participants negotiated identity and processes of inclusion/exclusion in Turin, through engaging with capoeira and parkour. The analysis of participants' embodied and emplaced identity negotiations enacted through capoeira and parkour addressed the shifting articulations of race/body/marginality, and the relationship between physical culture(s), spaces and subjectivity within the rebranding urban landscape of early 21st century Turin. The exploration of participants' contested practices of diasporic cosmopolitanism and (contingent) citizenship provided insightful perspectives to address the changing meanings, and stakes of multiculturalism, citizenship and social justice in contemporary European societies. The critical analysis of capoeira and parkour also interrogated the ambivalent nature of participants' negotiations in a historical global context, marked by ubiquitous bio-political health imperatives and individualizing moralities of self-fashioning. The study findings therefore contribute to a scholarship aiming to recognize and articulate global processes within local sites of inequalities and negotiations, in exploring how contemporary identities are constructed and (re)produced within the spaces of our cities.

Previous issue date: 2009-10-16 / Fundação Ford / Inserted in the fields of urban studies and of youth, the present dissertation inquired on the meanings that a graffiti group assigns to their practise in the urban space of the São Paulo Metropolis. In order to answer the original question that guided research namely, how a grafitti group establishes relationships with the city spaces and how its members attribute meaning to their action , this study draws on the broad human sciences literature on youth and on the city, having strongly resorted to Michel de Certeau concepts of space, place, and tactics. By means of interviews and of participant observation, the activities of the group called o.p.n.i. were followed in the city of São Paulo from March, 2007 through January, 2009. A brief account of the city space occupation process and of the emergence of graffiti make up the background against which the analysis unfolds the trajectory of the group and of its three members two blacks and one white, aged 23 to 24 years old, dwellers in São Mateus, in the far outskirts of the city. The analysis of the group constitution and of the tactics they resort to in order to face daily space, race, and class discrimination, which they are aware of allowed for eliciting the various meanings of graffiti for them: through graffiting they become conspicuous, keep group ties, survive; they express themselves, protest, denounce inequality, racism, politicians‟ corruption, police violence. By refusing business appealingness, the keen political intent of their various manifestations led them to engaging in community action among youngsters in their neighbourhood. Following them around the city also allowed for acknowledging the way they build subjectivity intertwined with the group‟s consolidation and with doing graffiti, as a means of sustaining a stubborn refusal of constantly imposed subjection.

O rap dos Racionais MC\'s em sala de aula como via de emancipação de jovens na periferia de São Paulo: análises de oficinas musicais com ênfase no rap / The rap of Racionais MC´s in the classroom as a route of emancipation for teenagers living at the outskirts in São Paulo: analyses of workshops emphasizing rapMartins, Raquel Mendonça 02 October 2015 (has links)
This study aimed at searching to what extent the multifaceted aesthetics of rap can be used in the processual development of impecunious teenagers (most of them, African descents), living in the outskirts of a big city. Music workshops concerning rap were held involving teenagers aged thirteen to fifteen. An arising actual feeling of identification towards both rupture and resistance in face of diverse kinds of racial discrimination was detected and interventions took place from 2011 to 2013, divided into two stages. The first one occurred at the NGO Casa do Zezinho, in Capão Redondo, southern part of the city of São Paulo; the second one was held at Municipal Elementary School Amorim Lima, in Butantã, west zone of the same city. The workshops consisted of promoting musical, recreational and intellectual activities founded on the aesthetics of rap, such as: free musical improvisation using percussion instruments, listening to rap and other various genres, including avand-garde songs. Initially the goal of the research was guided by the awareness of some listening promoting means of opposition to ways of perception homogeneized by the cultural industry. Up to then, the theoretical foundation was based on Theodor W. Adorno, Friedrich Nietzche, José Miguel Wisnik and others. Subsequently, works of Stuart Hall, Gilles Lipovetsky, Oswaldo Giacoia, Paulo Arantes, Michel Maffesoli, Philippe Jeammet, Mônica do Amaral e Marc Lamont Hill were analysed in order to understand the tragic sense of life for these teenagers and making them recognize the range of the influence of post modern social tensions upon their behavior, interests and choices. The outcomes provided by the two phases subsidized the analyses developed along the research.
