Banking sector, stock market development and economic growth in Zimbabwe : a multivariate causality frameworkDzikiti, Weston 02 1900 (has links)
The thesis examined the comprehensive causal relationship between the banking sector, stock market development and economic growth in a multi-variate framework using Zimbabwean time series data from 1988 to 2015. Three banking sector development proxies (total financial sector credit, banking credit to private sector and broad money M3) and three stock market development proxies (stock market capitalization, value traded and turnover ratio) were employed to estimate both long and short run relationships between banking sector, stock market and economic growth in Zimbabwe. The study employs the vector error correction model (VECM) as the main estimation technique and the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach as a robustness testing technique.
Results showed that in Zimbabwe a significant causal relationship from banking sector and stock market development to economic growth exists in the long run without any feedback effects. In the short run, however, a negative yet statistically significant causal relationship runs from economic growth to banking sector and stock market development in Zimbabwe. The study further concludes that there is a unidirectional causal relationship running from stock market development to banking sector development in Zimbabwe in both short and long run periods. Nonetheless this relationship between banking sector and stock markets has been found to be more significant in the short run than in the long run. The thesis adopts the complementary view and recommends for the spontaneity implementation of monetary policies as the economy grows. Monetary authorities should thus formulate policies to promote both banks and stock markets with corresponding growth in Zimbabwe’s economy. / Business Management / M. Com. (Business Management)

Narratives of at-risk students in secondary schools in ZimbabweMabhoyi, Lloyd Chaurika 02 1900 (has links)
This study investigates the experiences of at-risk secondary school students in the Chitungwiza District, Zimbabwe. At-riskiness is defined as a condition in which students are likely to produce poor academic achievement, irregular school attendance, grade retention or dropout due to various individual and social factors. At-riskiness has increased in Zimbabwe’s school population since the adoption and subsequent failure of the Economic Structural Adjustment Programme (ESAP) which has contributed to poverty and concomitant poor social conditions. A literature study explored at-riskiness in the light of socio-cultural perspectives on at-riskiness and also discussed contextual factors in the Zimbabwean schooling system which influence students’ vulnerability to at-riskiness. A qualitative inquiry using a narrative approach explored at-riskiness in the life stories of three male and three female secondary school students attending two selected schools in Chitungwiza, an economically deprived area close to Harare. Selection of schools was based on high levels of absenteeism and sustained poor performance in the national school leaving examinations. Purposeful participant selection was based on school records on grade repetition, absenteeism and poor behaviour. Semi-structured Interviews with participants, based on the Dan MacAdams framework for life story research, were used to gather rich data. Ethical compliance included written parental consent and participant assent and the assurance of anonymity, confidentiality and the right to refuse information. Findings were categorized under family related factors, school related factors and resource limitations. At-riskiness was exacerbated by parental unemployment, poor socio-economic conditions at home and a lack of cultural capital. Participants were compelled to undertake casual work to supplement household income in addition to the fulfillment of academic responsibilities. Poor school conditions comprising poor discipline and unprofessional teacher conduct increased at-riskiness especially among female participants. Resource limitations included poor nutrition, lack of basic necessities required for personal hygiene, in adequate parenting and the absence of psycho-social support mechanisms. Based on the literature study and empirical inquiry, recommendations were made for a more inclusive educational model, poverty alleviation and special support for disadvantaged students to reduce at-riskiness among students in Zimbabwe. / Educational Foundations / D. Business strategies of organisations in a challenging economy : the case of mobile company X Zimbabwe (MCXZ)Mungwini, Mercy 06 1900 (has links)
This study sought to establish the business strategies employed by Mobile Company X
Zimbabwe (MCXZ) for it to survive the challenging economy. A qualitative research and a
case-based approach involving MCXZ were used. Semi-structured interviews and secondary data were used to produce qualitative data and for triangulation of findings. Data was analysed and managed through qualitative coding and Atlas.ti program. The findings of the study showed that MCXZ employed growth business strategies through market penetration, product development, market development and strategic alliances. In addition, the study found that banking crisis, high competition, rapid technological changes, consumer preferences, shrinking markets and unfavourable government policies are the main threats in the challenging economy. However, MCXZ managed to survive and grow due to the integration of business strategies and the key success factors (KSF) in the industry. Appropriating Judean post-exilic literature in a postcolonial discourse : a case for ZimbabweRugwiji, Temba 06 1900 (has links)
The narratives about the postexilic Judean community are an ancient biblical account of the
socio-economic and political experiences of the Judeans when they were finally restored back to
Judah from Babylonian captivity. Although the Judean restoration was celebrated when they
were restored by King Cyrus’ decree, real freedom did not prevail in the Persian province of
Yehud; corruption, usury, greed, oppression, enslavement and loss of property impacted
negatively on the poor. The leadership expropriated from poor citizens land, vineyards, and
houses in exchange for food. In addition, the governors also charged heavy interest on money
borrowed by poor members of society. Parents and their children were subjected to enslavement.
In response to these corrupt practices, Nehemiah challenged the leadership to stop oppressing the
poor. Nehemiah went further to provide food to the starving Judeans and other people from
surrounding nations which served as a stimulus to strive towards alleviating poverty and starvation among communities.
By employing an approach known as hermeneutics of appropriation, this thesis
appropriates the experience of the postexilic Judean community to the post-independence
Zimbabwean context. Between the years 1999 and 2008 many people lost their lives due to
unemployment and lack of income, shelter, nutrition, and access to health-care facilities because
of the economic meltdown following the controversial fast-track land reform programme in
Zimbabwe. The majority of people are still experiencing the negative impact of the land reform
as people strive to make a living in the absence of jobs and income scarcity. Corruption by the
leadership has continued to further exacerbate starvation among the poor until today.This study attempts to employ the biblical Nehemiah’s social justice reforms (Neh 5) to
challenge the Zimbabwean leadership to focus on rebuilding the country which was ravaged by a
decade of both political and socio-economic crises. Lessons drawn from Nehemiah would be
used to stimulate the leadership in the Zimbabwean government and members of society at large,

This study aimed at examining the social and economic impact of rural irrigation schemes with a particular focus on the Lower Gweru Irrigation scheme. The general objective of this study was to assess if rural irrigation schemes can act as livelihood security assets in transforming rural livelihoods, reduce poverty and attain food security in light of climate change.
Results are based on findings from self-administered questionnaires directed at farmers and irrigation stakeholders, and face to face interviews involving farmers and stakeholders. Using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, Microsoft excel and Health 24 web BMI calculator it was concluded that; Lower Gweru schemes, is a source of livelihood security securing food security, reduce poverty and creates rural employment. Regardless of various challenges faced by rural irrigation farmers, irrigations act as poverty and climate change buffers, providing an opportunity for communities to raise their Human Development Index and attain sustainable development. / Geography / M.Sc.(Geography)

Impact of livelihood diversification on household food security : the case of Hurungwe District, ZimbabweNcube, Admiral 23 October 2012 (has links)
This study examines the role of livelihood diversification in promoting
household food security with particular reference to Hurungwe District in
Zimbabwe. This focuses on assessing the contribution and impact of
predominant livelihood diversification strategies in study area. The study
employed qualitative methods of research entailing focus group discussions,
observation, key informant interviews and literature review as methods of data
collection. The study revealed that limited access to credit, skills development,
markets and transport infrastructure weaken the efficacy of nonfarm livelihoods
to improve food security. Key recommendations are that government, NGOs
and communities must work in tandem to increase livelihood options for food
insecure communities. Suggested strategies include increasing access to micro
finance, vocational skills training and other support services paying attention to
gender considerations. Areas requiring further investigation which emanated

The wider vision of social policy : an analysis of the transformative role of the Fast Track Land Reform Programme in Zvimba District (Zimbabwe)Tom, Tom 22 September 2020 (has links)
The thesis focuses on the social policy dimension of Zimbabwe’s Fast Track Land Reform Programme (FTLRP). Interrogating land reform in the context of Transformative Social Policy (TSP) is a critical lacuna in Zimbabwe’s land reform and dominant social policy literature, implying the absence of a wider vision of social policy. This vision emphasises the consideration of the five tasks of social policy (production, redistribution, reproduction, protection and social cohesion); and acknowledges the symbiotic link between social policy and development. The thesis asks, how did the FTLRP and land occupations unfold; what is the new agrarian structure and, forms of social organisation in the aftermath of the fast track land reform; and how has the programme played out in relation to redistribution, production, social protection, reproduction and social cohesion? The thesis is based on a qualitative-dominant mixed methods research approach, and is complemented by predominantly quantitative data gathered by the African Institute for Agrarian Studies (AIAS), now Sam Moyo African Institute for Agrarian Studies (SMAIAS); and a sample of 150 A1 land beneficiaries drawn from Dalkeith, Whynhill and St Lucia Farms. Using grounded empirical data gathered in an eight (8) months-long ethnography in Zvimba district, Mashonaland West Province; and transcending ideological and epistemological debates, the thesis argues that, despite shortcomings, the fast track land reform is a crucial social policy ‘instrument’ with immense potential to transform lives. Across the district, land is a core economic, social and political resource that is central in enhancing wellbeing. The centrality of land reform in transforming lives is hampered mainly by land use and production constraints, and as the study results show, this dimension has the least positive outcomes. Diverse targeted support services that are mainly crystallised around land use and production, value chains and markets, are essential. If the farmers are appropriately supported, the benefits of land reform are potentially immense. Overall, land reform must be understood as a transformative social policy initiative and fast track is the case study for demonstrating this.
