Analýza některých parametrů reprodukce gepardů (Acinonyx jubatus) chovaných ve světových zoologických zahradách. / The analysis of some reproduction parameters of cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) kept in world's zoos.

Makulová, Laura January 2016 (has links)
This work is focused on the breeding of cheetahs Acinonyx jubatus bred in captivity. The first part is divided into two main sections and is processed using the available scientific literature. The first section describes the history and current status of taxonomic classification of individual species and subspecies of the genus Acinonyx. The second section deals with general biology of the species - characteristics, habitat, food in the wild, extending the route of exposure, morphology of the reproductive system. Separate chapters are devoted to the problems of rearing animals in breeding facilities - food cheetahs areas for breeding, a special section discusses the issues of reproduction in captivity. In the practical part, an analysis of data from the International studbook Acinonyx jubatus 2013, focusing on the reproductive success of males and females according to their origin and age. Data was transferred to MS Excel and main observed characteristics presented in the form of graphs. The resulting data were statistically analyzed.

Inspiring Pro-Conservation Behavior through Innovations in Zoo Exhibit and Campaign Design

Kelly, Ashley Elizabeth January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources / Jeffrey Skibins / Amid rapidly increasing anthropogenically caused wildlife extinctions, zoos are often expected to embrace the role of proactive conservation organizations. Many are leading the way through innovations in the development of engaging visitor experiences. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of the new and cutting-edge immersive interpretation within the TigerTrek Exhibit at Taronga Zoo (Sydney, Australia), for its ability to influence visitors to engage in pro-conservation behaviors related to certified sustainable palm oil advocacy and consumerism. Survey data were collected from zoo visitors prior to entering the Sumatran Tiger Trek exhibit (n = 514), upon exiting the exhibit (n = 509), and by email at six-week (n = 106) and six-month (n = 18) intervals post-visit to investigate the immediate and long-term impacts of the exhibit on visitors’ pro-conservation behavioral intentions and actual behaviors. Results indicate an increase in post-visit respondents’ levels of awareness (χ2 = 65.26 (1), p < .001), motivation (t = -6.976 (1029), p < .000) and behavior intentions (t = -5.256 (1042), p < .000), however, post-visit respondents also reported increased levels of concern that all palm oil is grown unsustainably (χ2 = 9.09 (1), p < .01), which runs contrary to interpretive messaging. Follow up surveys revealed after both six-weeks and six-months post-visit; 29.2% of respondents purchased a product because it contained Certified Sustainable Palm Oil, however, 50% of six-week respondents had actively avoided buying a product because it contained palm oil. By understanding how visitors perceive the interpretive messaging within an exhibit and appreciating the types of conservation behaviors visitors are willing and able to engage in, zoos can more effectively achieve their conservation campaign goals.

Percepce welfare obratlovců mimo savce návštěvníky vybrané ZOO / Visitor perception of ZOO animals welfare, except mammals

ŠVOMOVÁ, Tereza January 2018 (has links)
Welfare aka comfortable life style of animals is a state when an animal is balanced with environment. All requirements are fulfilled for its physical and mental health. If the animal is healthy, we expect all requirements checked. Mentioned requirements of welfare set Webster in 1999. He made up a theory of 5 freedoms which has to follow every breeder to keep physical and mental health of animals. Welfare is doing very well in ZOO, because it keeps all animals needs fulfilled as much as possible. I made questionnaire for visitors to find out interest about welfare in one of unnamed Zoo. There were 200 filled questionnaire during July, August and September of 2017. The target of this work was to find out an interest about animal welfare in certain ZOO. Other target was finding out the most and the least happy animal by visitors.

Využití exkurzí do ZOO Jihlava v prvouce a přírodovědě / The usage of Jihlava ZOO excursions in the Homeland study and Biology lessons

URBANOVÁ, Andrea January 2007 (has links)
This diploma paper describes various possibilities of how to make the best account of Jihlava ZOO excursions in the primary school lessons of Homeland study and Biology. This work also reports methodical instructions on the realization of these excursions. The theoretical part of my thesis deals with the basic characterization of Primary School Educational Program, on which basis mentioned excursion projects were drawn and, in addition, this part also shows us some essential information about Jihlava ZOO. In following four chapters, the author explains the organization of these proposed excursions and gives us basic data about the concrete possibilities of their usage.

Fault Line

Belcher, Kacee Lynn 20 February 2013 (has links)
FAULT LINE examines the fragile humanity connected to the themes of sexuality, violence, addiction, family dynamics, and death. The book is not broken into sections; rather, as poems build upon one another to explore a narrative arc, FAULT LINE tracks a single speaker’s experience from girlhood to the verge of independent womanhood. The speaker employs formal structures such as the prose poem, sestina, and particularly the list poem to examine the fluidity of inner experience and also the culture at large while challenging the narrow definitions of femininity and masculinity. FAULT LINE works to not only address the question of blame but also the literal breaks in lines of poetry. By looking at a single speaker’s struggle, the book, like life, is both humorous and horrifying.

The Captive Animal Activity Tracking System: A Systematic Method for the Continuous Evaluation of Captive Animal Welfare.

Kalafut, Kathryn Lynn 12 1900 (has links)
Optimal animal welfare has been a long-term goal for captive animal institutions. To measure welfare a definition and identification of elements that make up welfare need to be established. Further, a method to measure welfare's elements that can be implemented into staff's daily routine is necessary to establish baseline levels and track changes in welfare. The goal of the proposed captive animal activity tracking system is to allow for the measurement of each element of welfare quickly, while providing information regarding the animal's current state of welfare and how changes to the animal's environment affect welfare. The data show that this system is effective in revealing behavioral patterns and changes in behavior that occurred in response to environmental changes.

Breeding behavior of captive emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri)

Kiel, Mary Elizabeth 01 January 1983 (has links)
Breeding behavior of captive Emperor Penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) was observed at Sea World, San Diego, California during July, August, and September 1980, and April 1981. Emphasis was on displays, courtship, egg-laying, incubation, and care of chicks. I observed the trumpet display most often between birds of opposite sexes and I interpret it as a signal of sexual identity. I interpreted the sideways stare display as a signal of sexual identity important in pair bond maintenance. Three head movements studied shared several functions including comfort behavior and reduction of intraspecific aggression. My observations confirmed that the display walk occurs in Emperors and is used by males to attract females. The single note cry allows separated members of a pair to find each other. Results of an attempt to sex Emperor Penguins by vocalization are reported.

Zoo inverso : an investigation of landscape architecture as an instrument to convey experience, habitat and beauty within a zoological garden enclosure

Engelbrecht, Marissa January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation explores the experiential quality of zoological garden enclosures and the threshold between man and animal. This exploration manifests within the context of man’s act of demarcation represented in zoological gardens. The National Zoological Gardens in Pretoria situated on the periphery of the Central Business District form the proposed context of this study. The zoological gardens provide a platform to explore the ill-defined threshold between man and animal, the lack of experiential levels and the quality of the enclosures as habitat. The study investigates landscape design as a medium for design intervention to enhance the experience of zoo enclosures for both the visitor and animal. Through a methodological approach, the dissertation aims to establish design stratagems grounded in theory of landscape architecture, zoo design theory and case study review. The stratagems will serve as catalyst to challenge current zoo design principles in order to determine a new set of principles for landscape intervention. The design will follow a hypothetical process that implements the principles as spatial explorations, followed by pragmatic considerations. The outcome will demonstrate on a spatial and experiential level how landscape design can combine ecology and aesthetics to create a hybridised interactive experience with nature, animals and humans in a detail enclosure design. Technical and programmatic requirements will test and refine the final proposal of the enclosure design. / Dissertation (ML(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2014. / Architecture / ML(Prof) / Unrestricted
