BackgroundThere is no specific number of people with addiction because it is difficult to obtain when the number of unreported cases is high because not everyone seeks care. There is a large gap in knowledge about addiction which can lead to negative attitudes and worse care for these patients. The problems gets more difficult if it includes pain. AimThe purpose of this litterturereview is to describe nurses 'experience of responding to patient´s with addictions and to describe what data collection methods used in the included studies. MethodA literature study with descriptive design and the eleven selected articles were searched in the database called CINAHL, and their approach is both qualitative and quantitative ResultsThe results of the present study show that nurses' education are significant in their attitudes toward patients with addiction, this also gives an uncertainty in the meeting with these patients, which leads to insufficient care and pain management. The inadequate education forces the nurses to help each other to master the care of patients and the best reply with addiction best way possible. Experience of working with patients with addiction is a major asset for nurses who have not obtained further education about care of these patients. Conclusionpatients with addiction are a growing population in today's society and nurses meet these individuals in many different workplaces whatever education they possess. For the best possible outcome for both patient and nurses, is it very important that the nurse is as prepared as possible by already in the basic education receive in-depth training about these patients. Then while working be offered more courses and education / in-depth courses in the care of patients with addiction.

Predictors of Treatment Outcomes of Elderly Substance Abusers in Treatment FacilitesBosek, Renata Raye 01 January 2016 (has links)
Research in the late 1990s and early 2000s projected that the number of people aged 50 and older who needed treatment for illicit drug use and abuse of prescribed medications to increase from approximately 1.7 million in 2001 to approximately 4.4 million in 2020. The purpose of this study was to examine how gender, marital status, employment status, and primary referral source predicted treatment outcomes with this older population. Of interest was how these predictions could better prepare treatment providers to treat individuals born between 1946 and 1964 who are addicted to substances. This quantitative study used an archival database, the Treatment Episode Dataset-Discharges (TEDS-D) from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. A discriminant function analysis revealed significance in the predictor variables with treatment outcomes. The second research question asked whether the criminal justice system/legal system alone, as the primary referral source, could predict treatment outcomes. A chi-square test revealed the primary referral source had a significant impact on treatment outcomes. These findings have implications for positive social change by empowering practitioners working with the older adult generation in substance abuse treatment to recognize the changing roles of retirement. These findings may, in turn, help those adults cope with physical health problems and loss of mobility, foster social supports within the community, and address the mental health problems among this population.

Emotional Cutoff In Women Who Abuse SubstancesBell, Frances Lynn 03 October 2000 (has links)
This exploratory study was based upon Bowen Family Systems theory and investigated emotional cutoff in women (n = 168) who entered a substance abuse treatment program. Three questions were explored: First, the degree of emotional cutoff in this sample was compared to a non-clinical sample of women. Secondly, the relationship was explored between the variable of emotional cutoff and the following variables: substance abuse variables, individual psychological functioning variables, and marital and family relationship variables. Finally, the relationship was explored between dropout from substance abuse treatment and emotional cutoff. Results indicate that the degree of emotional cutoff was significantly higher in this clinical sample of women who abused substances than in two comparison samples - one was a non-clinical sample of women balancing multiple roles and responsibilities and one mixed sample of divorced men and women. Emotional cutoff was found to have a significant positive relationship with the following variables: behaviors characteristic of substance abusers, behaviors of a highly defensive person, symptoms of depression, anxiety, hostility, psychoticism, somatization, obsessive compulsive disorder, interpersonal sensitivity, and a global assessment of psychological dysfunction. Emotional cutoff was found to have a significant negative relationship with denial of substance abuse. No significant relationship was found between emotional cutoff and marital satisfaction, health or distress in family functioning, dropout from treatment, severity of substance abuse, and symptoms of paranoia or phobia. These results have implications for further research based on Bowen theory and the understanding of the emotional process of addicted family systems. / Master of Science

An exploratory study into the experience and behaviors of students who use nyaope/whonga at the University of LimpopoMphahlele, Lucky Sibusiso January 2020 (has links)
Thesis (M.A. (Clinical Psychology)) -- University of Limpopo, 2020 / The use and abuse of illicit drugs is a challenge which affects people on a global scale and
South Africa. The use of a new street drug known as nyaope (whonga) has been on the rise in
the country amongst the youth, including university students. Its use is associated with a wide
range of negative consequences such as poor academic performance, aggression, vandalism,
rape, risky sexual behaviours, and social dysfunctionality. The main objective of this study
was to explore the self-reported experiences and behaviours of students who use nyaope at
the University of Limpopo. The study was qualitative in nature as the researcher wanted to
gather first-hand, in-depth information. The sample was purposive in nature and consisted of
6 participants. Quality criteria were used to ensure the quality and rigour of the findings.
Thematic content analysis (TCA) was used to analyse data. Six major themes emerged from
the analysis which were supported by existing findings. The themes were identified as: causes
of drug use, frequency of drug use, experiences of students, knowledge about the negative
implications of the drug and self-reported behaviours. Participants reported experiencing a
decline in academic performance, deteriorating relationships with others, poor physical and
psychological wellbeing, behavioural changes and perceiving that they were discriminated
against. The findings of this study are useful to aid in informing policy and interventions at
the University. They may also help psychologists who work with drug abusers

Att vårda patienter med narkotikamissbruk - sjuksköterskors erfarenheter : En litteraturstudie / Caring for patients with substance abuse- nurses’ experiences : A literature reviewForsberg, Jennifer, Malmqvist, Sebastian January 2016 (has links)
Metod: I litteraturöversikten användes totalt 10 vårdvetenskapliga artiklar. Sjuksköterkornas attityder/fördomar, misstro/manipulation samt utbildning diskuteras i förhållande till författarnas tankar, litteraturöversiktens bakgrund / Background: People are often prejudiced towards people with a substance abuse. Patients with a substance abuse express that nurses seems to care for them differently than with other patients –they feel like they’re being stigmatized, not being prioritized, ignored and that they receive less care than others. Commitment and urge are two components that should be contained in the nurses’ approach towards patients with substance abuse. Aim: The aim of this study was to describenurses’ experiences of caring for patients with substance abuse. Method: This litterature review was based on ten scientific articles. The articles were obtained from the databases Academic Search Complete, CINAHL Complete and PsycInfo. Some of the keywords that were used in the research were “nurse”, “substance abuse” and “experiences”.To analyse the articles we have used Fribergs (2012) method. The theoretical framework that was used in this literature review was Katie Erikssons caritative theory. Results: The results of this litterature review show three main themes and two subthemes. The first theme “How nurses treat the substance abusers while they care for them”, include two subthemes “Nurses’ attitudes and prejudiced actions” and “How stress and manpulation can affect the care”. The theme highlights how nurses’ attitudes and prejudices affect the care they’re giving. The secondtheme, “The importance of education and knowledge in the care of patients who suffers from substance abuse”, describes nurses’ experiences of how their lack of education affects the care they’re giving and why it’s important to have good competence. The last theme “Worries, fears and anxiety” illuminates different reasons to why the nurses have these types of feelings when they’re caring for patients with a substance disorder. Discussion: The discussion highlights the most outstanding parts of the result in association with Katie Erikssons caritative theory. Nurses’ attitudes/prejudices, distrust/manipulation and the importance of education are discussed in relation the authors’ thoughts, the background of the literature review and the theoretical frame.
