Adaptive modelling and planning for learning intelligent behaviour

An intelligent agent must be capable of using its past experience to develop an understanding of how its actions affect the world in which it is situated. Given some objective, the agent must be able to effectively use its understanding of the world to produce a plan that is robust to the uncertainty present in the world. This thesis presents a novel computational framework called the Adaptive Modelling and Planning System (AMPS) that aims to meet these requirements for intelligence. The challenge of the agent is to use its experience in the world to generate a model. In problems with large state and action spaces, the agent can generalise from limited experience by grouping together similar states and actions, effectively partitioning the state and action spaces into finite sets of regions. This process is called abstraction. Several different abstraction approaches have been proposed in the literature, but the existing algorithms have many limitations. They generally only increase resolution, require a large amount of data before changing the abstraction, do not generalise over actions, and are computationally expensive. AMPS aims to solve these problems using a new kind of approach. AMPS splits and merges existing regions in its abstraction according to a set of heuristics. The system introduces splits using a mechanism related to supervised learning and is defined in a general way, allowing AMPS to leverage a wide variety of representations. The system merges existing regions when an analysis of the current plan indicates that doing so could be useful. Because several different regions may require revision at any given time, AMPS prioritises revision to best utilise whatever computational resources are available. Changes in the abstraction lead to changes in the model, requiring changes to the plan. AMPS prioritises the planning process, and when the agent has time, it replans in high-priority regions. This thesis demonstrates the flexibility and strength of this approach in learning intelligent behaviour from limited experience.

Niche partitioning due to adaptive foraging reverses effects of nestedness and connectance on pollination network stability.

Much research debates whether properties of ecological networks such as nestedness and connectance stabilise biological communities while ignoring key behavioural aspects of organisms within these networks. Here, we computationally assess how adaptive foraging (AF) behaviour interacts with network architecture to determine the stability of plant-pollinator networks. We find that AF reverses negative effects of nestedness and positive effects of connectance on the stability of the networks by partitioning the niches among species within guilds. This behaviour enables generalist pollinators to preferentially forage on the most specialised of their plant partners which increases the pollination services to specialist plants and cedes the resources of generalist plants to specialist pollinators. We corroborate these behavioural preferences with intensive field observations of bee foraging. Our results show that incorporating key organismal behaviours with well-known biological mechanisms such as consumer-resource interactions into the analysis of ecological networks may greatly improve our understanding of complex ecosystems.

Embodied musical experiences in early childhood

Embodied Music Cognition is a recently developed theoretical and empirical framework which in the last eight years has been redefining the role of the body in music perception. However, to date there have been very few attempts to research embodied musical experiences in early childhood. The research reported in this thesis investigated 4- and 5-year-olds’ self-regulatory sensorimotor processes in response to music. Two video-based observation studies were conducted. The first, exploratory in nature, aimed to identify levels of musical self-regulation in children’s actions while ‘playing’ in a motion-based interactive environment (Sound=Space). The interactive element of this system provided an experiential platform for the young ‘players’ to explore and develop the ability to recognise themselves as controlling musical events, and to continuously adapt their behaviour according to expected auditory outcomes. Results showed that low-level experiences of musical self-regulation were associated with more random trajectories in space, often performed at a faster pace (e.g. running), while a higher degree of control corresponded to more organised spatial pathways usually involving slower actions and repetition. The second study focused on sensorimotor synchronisation. It aimed to identify children’s free and individual movement choices in response to rhythmic music with a salient and steady beat presented at different tempi. It also intended to find the similarities and differences between participants’ repertoire and their adjustments to tempo changes. The most prominent findings indicate that children’s movements exhibited a resilient periodicity which was not synchronised to the beat. Even though a great variety of body actions (mostly non-gestural) was found across the group, each child tended to use a more restricted repertoire and one specific dominant action that would be executed throughout the different tempi. Common features were also found in children’s performance, such as, the spatial preference for up/down directions and for movements done in place (e.g. vertical jump). The results of both studies highlight the great deal of variability in the way preschoolers regulate their own sensorimotor behaviour when interacting with music. This variety of responses can be interpreted as underlining the importance of the physical nature of the cognitive agent in the perception of music. If this is indeed the case, then it will be crucial to create and develop embodied music learning activities in early years education that encourage each child to self-monitor their own sensorimotor processes and, thus, to shape their experiences of linking sound and movement in a meaningful and fulfilling way.

Teaching adaptive behaviour to 'behaviour problem' high school students : an exploratory study

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the Adaptive Behaviour group intervention effected a greater immediate positive change on 'poorly adapted' student locus of control, self esteem, group evaluation and perceived behaviour than Helping Skills, Relaxation Training or No Intervention group after eight weeks. The three independent variables - Adaptive Behaviour, Helping Skills and Relaxation Training Group Interventions - were devised and led by the Researcher and two school counsellors respectively. Measurement of the dependent variables was by the use of the following instruments pre-test and post-test: Locus of Control Scale for Children (Nowicki Strickland 1972); Coopersmith Self Esteem Inventory (Coopersmith, 1982); and researcher designed questionnaires. A pre-test post-test group design was used in the study. The subjects were years 7-9 High School students identified by Student Year Advisers and the Assistant Principal Student Welfare as being 'poorly adapted' and 'well adapted' to the school environment. Students were randomly allocated - in year groups - to the intervention and control groups. Results indicated no short term significant positive change in locus of control for any intervention or controlgroup; no short term significant positive change in self esteem for any intervention group; no significant correlation between locus of control and self esteem scores for any intervention group; positive pre and post-test group evaluations for all groups; some positive short term change in teacher and student perceptions of student behaviour in regard to all three interventions. In some cases students' behaviour in the experimental group (Group A) was perceived more positively by teachers and students. Some recommendations for further research are: replication of the study over a longer period of time with some modification to the experimental programme, the research design and methods of measurement.

Investigating the effectiveness of a fundamental motor skill intervention of 4 year old children with autism spectrum disorder

Young children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience significant delays in their fundamental motor skills (FMS) yet, FMS are virtually ignored in the intervention literature as traditional therapies focus on the core challenges in the social, communicative, and behavioural domains. This study sought to examine the effectiveness of a FMS intervention at improving the motor skills, adaptive behaviour, and social skills of 4 year old children with ASD. Motor Outcomes (Manuscript 1): Results demonstrated significant improvements in motor skills following the intervention; these improvements were retained at the 6-week follow-up. Adaptive Behaviour and Social Skill Outcomes (Manuscript 2): Results demonstrated individual gains in adaptive behaviour and social skills; although no significant group improvements were found. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that a FMS intervention can be effective at improving motor skills, and may result in individual behavioural improvements. These findings warrant further research with a larger sample.

Résumé : Le syndrome du X fragile (SXF) est la première cause de déficience intellectuelle héréditaire et résulte de mutations dans le gène FMR1 menant à l’absence d’expression de la protéine FMRP. Chez la souris déficiente en FMRP (KO-fmr1), des travaux récents ont montré une suractivation de la voie ERK qui jouerait un rôle important dans la physiopathologie du SXF. La lovastatine est un inhibiteur de la HMG-CoA réductase, utilisée pour traiter l’hypercholestérolémie. Parmi ses effets pléiotropes, elle inhiberait également ERK. Nous avons émis l’hypothèse que la lovastatine pourrait compenser en partie l’absence de FMRP et avoir des effets cognitifs positifs chez les individus avec SXF. Objectifs: Évaluer l’efficacité de la lovastatine à réduire le score global de l’ABC-C (Aberrant Behavior Checklist-Community), ainsi que le score de chaque sous-domaine d’ABC-C. Vérifier l’innocuité de la lovastatine pendant le traitement. Méthodes : Une étude prospective, non-randomisée a été réalisée sur une période de 12 semaines. Seize participants avec SXF (âgés de 10 à 31 ans), ont reçu des doses croissantes de la lovastatine (20 mg et 40 mg). Résultats : Des améliorations ont été observées au niveau du comportement aberrant soit le score total de l’ABC-C (p=0.005), ainsi que les sousdomaines: Hyperactivité (p=0.002), Léthargie(p=0.011), Stéréotypie (p=0.025) et Retrait social (p=0.003). Comme attendu, la lovastatine a été bien toléré sans aucun effet indésirable grave observé. Conclusion : Nos résultats suggèrent que la lovastatine peut avoir des effets bénéfices chez les individus avec le SXF. Une étude randomisée, placébocontrôlée est nécessaire pour valider nos trouvailles. / Abstract : Background: Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) results from dynamic mutations leading ultimately to the absence of expression of the Fragile X Mental Retardation Protein (FMRP). It is characterized by synaptic upregulated protein synthesis and immature dendritic spines associated with altered brain plasticity and cognitive functions. Recent work in Fmr1 knockout mice has shown that lovastatin, an inhibitor of Ras-ERK1/2, normalized hippocampus protein synthesis. We hypothesize that lovastatin, as a diseasemodifying drug, would counterweigh the absence of FMRP and improve brain development and learning abilities. Here we report a phase I study to assess the safety and efficacy of lovastatin in individuals with FXS. Methods: A total of 15 subjects (13 males, 6-31 years old) were treated with escalating doses of lovastatin (up to 40 mg) for three months. Their behaviour were assessed before and after treatment using the Aberrant Behavioral Checklist – Community (ABC-C) total score (primary outcome), as well as domains of the FXS validated version of the ABC-C (secondary outcomes). Results: The treatment was well tolerated and minimal adverse effects were reported. Significant improvement in the primary outcome (P < 0.005), as well as in secondary outcomes, were observed in the majority of the subjects (12/15). Conclusions: We believe long-term sustained treatment with diseased-modifying drugs would be necessary in order to improve behaviour and learning. Lovastatin, well known for its long-term security profile, reveals itself as a strong candidate to that purposes. Nevertheless, a larger placebo-controlled trial of lovastatin in this population is warranted in order to confirm its efficacy.

Factors mediating the distribution and impact of the non-native invertebrate predator Bythotrephes longimanus

Predicting the impacts of non-native species remains one of the greatest challenges to invasion ecologists. Because of their insularity, freshwater systems are particularly vulnerable to invasions, especially from non-native predators. The research in this thesis explores the role of abiotic and biotic factors in mediating the distribution and impact of Bythotrephes longimanus, a predatory cladoceran that has been introduced to freshwater systems in North America. Although the general impacts of this invasion have been documented, little is known about the factors that modulate them. Using a combination of field surveys and experiments, I tested several hypotheses concerning the influence of interactions with native species, as well as the role of heterogeneity in the light environment, in mediating the impact of Bythotrephes. Results demonstrated that biotic resistance by native macroinvertebrate predators does not play a limiting role in the establishment success of Bythotrephes. However, the within-lake distribution of Bythotrephes was influenced by these macroinvertebrates, suggesting that the native predator context matters when trying to understand the impacts of non-native predators. This was demonstrated with a mesocosm experiment in which the impact of Bythotrephes was constrained by the native Chaoborus larvae. In terms of the abiotic environment, in situ feeding experiments demonstrated that refuges from impact could exist for some prey taxa, as the outcome of predation by Bythotrephes was dependent on light availability and some prey taxa were more successful at evading predation under low light conditions. Finally, results show that adaptive behaviour by prey is also an important determinant of impact, as migrating Daphnia can escape predation effects by Bythotrephes. The combination of light-limited predation and a shallow distribution by Bythotrephes selects for prey that occupy relatively deeper positions during the day. As a whole, this research highlights the importance of complex interactions in mediating the impact of Bythotrephes and may help to explain some of the variation that has been documented among invaded lakes.
