Children of Divorce: Long-Term Psychological Effects and Neurological Consequences

Olofsson, Emmie January 2019 (has links)
This thesis has examined what long-term psychological and neurological effects that are apparent in children and adults who have experienced parental divorce. It was predicted that significantly more children and adult children from divorced families would have increased symptoms of mental disorders than children and adult children from married homes e.g., anxiety, depression, panic disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. It was further predicted that parental divorce would negatively affect the neurological system in the offspring. The correlation between children of divorce and negative neurological effects was not found to be true. However, adult children of divorce have significantly lower baseline cortisol levels compared to adult children of marriage. Dysregulated cortisol levels are highly associated with the development of e.g., anxiety, depression, and brain damage. Parental divorce did not only influence how secretion of the hormone cortisol is regulated within adult children of divorce, but how both children and adult children of divorce psychologically adapt postdivorce. Children of divorce have for instance lower general well-being, more symptoms of anxiety and depression, lower self-esteem, and feel more stress than children of marriage. Adult children of divorce are more likely to experience marital discord, getting divorced themselves, anxiety and depression, lower academic performance, and substance abuse, etc. The result of the thesis suggests that children and adult children from divorced families are negatively affected, both psychologically and neurologically, regardless of age. Parental divorce and supplementary effects make it more likely for children and adult children to experience more symptoms of mental disorders.

Perspektiv Vuxna barn med psykisk sjukdom : En kvalitativ intervjustudie / Perspective Adult children with mental illness : A qualitative interview study

Fredhage, Nina January 2019 (has links)
Abstract Mental illness amongst young adults is increasing and the need for care interventions becomes greater. Relatives are now seen as a resource in these care interventions. In spite of this, previous research shows that society's efforts to promote contacts with relatives are partly substandard. Communication and cooperation between relatives and healthcare professionals is an area highlighted as one of the problem areas. The purpose of this study was to investigate and create a deeper understanding about parenting to children with long-term mental illness. This is by describing how health professionals experience the meeting with parents of children with mental illness.           The study was conducted with interviews of four people working in different health care institutions that met parents of adult children with mental illness and were analyzed through qualitative content analysis. The results were reported with three themes: Healthcare professionals ' perspective, Parent's perspective and future. The result showed the problem of parental distrust in care, but was in relation to previous research relatively positive, that all four respondents experienced mostly good meetings with these parents. Recurring factors that could improve potential problems arise where time, information and knowledge are important components. The results also showed the importance of a good working environment and the importance of a professional manager.

Attachment, locus of control, and romantic intimacy in adult children of alcoholics: a correlational investigation

Unknown Date (has links)
This study examined the relationships of adult attachment, locus of control, and fear of intimacy between adult children of alcoholics (ACOAs) and non adult children of alcoholics (NACOAs). A convenience sample of 224 participants, specifically 108 ACOAs and 116 NACOAs, completed the Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised Questionnaire (ECR-R), Rotter's Locus of Control Scale (LOC), and the Fear of Intimacy Scale (FIS). Participants were drawn from self-help groups, gatherings, and a health fair held in Palm Beach County, Florida. Data were analyzed utilizing multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), series of analyses of variance (ANOVA), stepwise regression analyses, discriminant function analysis, in addition to correlational analyses. ... ACOAs demonstrated insecure, fearful avoidant attachment patterns, an external locus of control, and greater fear of intimacy. In contrast, NACOAs exhibited secure adult attachment, an internal locus of control, and lower fear of intimacy. This study lends empirical support to clinical practice pertaining to the constructs of adult attachment, locus of control, and fear of intimacy in ACOAs and NACOAs. / by Raffaela Peter. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2012. / Includes bibliography. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / System requirements: Adobe Reader.

The Impact of Adult Children’s Education on Elderly Parents’ Health and Old-Age Support: Evidence from the United States and China

Jiang, Nan January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to study the effect of adult children's education on the health and economic wellbeing of their parents in old age. This dissertation contributes to the field of human capital theory through enhancing the understanding of the connections between adult children and parents in old age. It studies large nationally representative data sets in the US and China. The findings highlight the potential importance of pathways through which children’s human capital affects parents in later life and suggest that offspring’s human capital (education) is important for parental health and old-age support. This research has important implications for the amelioration of health disparities related to intergenerational inequality in both the U.S and China.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Rosângela Mendes de Matos Campos.pdf: 916622 bytes, checksum: 5cfb935b3fc2a914814b2c728750abd0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-11-28 / The contemporaneity is characterized by several changes, among all the areas of the human life, the social and the relational suffered a profound impact due to these changes, and the family followed them. Among all changes that they have been happening in the family, we elected to this survey the adult children’s view who live at a parental home, under their process of differentiation. Pursuing to understand this phenomenon, we performed some interviews in the State of São Paulo with four adults, being in the 30-40 age group and assigned into the labor market. We performed this qualitative survey based on the systemic theoretical assumptions and the differentiation, by means of the content analysis of the interviews the categories were organized to systematize and relate with the narrative of the participants. The generated knowledge demonstrated that although we are in contemporaneity, characterized by constant changes and the cult of individualism, there are still many conflicts in the relation between parents and adult children that cohabit. This is particularly so because living in the parental home does not necessarily mean obedience to the imposed family rules. However, apart from any divergence that may exist, paradoxically, the family as a place of refuge from the uncertainties of the world, the children recognize the difficulties in the development of the differentiation between their members and the gain of autonomy / A contemporaneidade é caracterizada por diversas transformações, em todas a áreas da vida humana, o social e o relacional sofreram um grande impacto decorrente dessas mudanças, e a família acompanhou essas transformações.

When older mothers work : adult children's perceptions of maternal employment effects Christine B. Nelson

Nelson, Christine B. 01 January 1990 (has links)
The effects of maternal employment on the young child have been examined for over 50 years. This research focuses on perceived maternal employment effects at a later point in the family life cycle: when mother is older and children are grown. Thirty-two poverty level women aged 56-83 (M=66.4 years) and their adult sons (n=l 6) and daughters (n= 16) were independently interviewed. All of the older women were paid workers or "stipended volunteers" who were employed part time (20 hours a week) in child care, clerical, or other service jobs. They had a variety of work histories; all were widowed or divorced.

An Examination of the Impact of Hoarding Parent-Adult Child Relationships and Family Functioning

Park, Jennifer M. 03 June 2013 (has links)
Compulsive hoarding is characterized by difficulty discarding unneeded items and the accumulation of items within living spaces and is associated with significant functional impairment and distress. Along with the negative impact on the individual, previous reports have indicated that compulsive hoarding is not only impairing and substantially burdensome for family members, but also linked to disruptions in family functioning. The present study utilized a path model analysis to examine the associations between an array of hoarding variables hypothesized to impact family functioning and parent-adult child relationships in 199 adult children of hoarders. Results revealed that family functioning mediated the relationship between hoarding severity and parent-adult child relationship. Decreased insight into hoarding symptoms was directly associated with decreased quality of parent-adult child relationships, which was mediated by family functioning. Increased family accommodation was significantly associated with increased impairment (work, social, family domains) in adult children of hoarders. Clinical implications and future directions in research are discussed.

Intergenerational solidarity in Asian immigrant families : subtitle the experience of employed Canadians

Lee, Eun-Kyong 11 1900 (has links)
The main purpose of this study was to examine the Asian perspective in regard to the intergenerational solidarity framework developed by Bengtson and his colleagues. Focusing on normative solidarity and functional solidarity within Asian families, adult children's provision of assistance to elderly relatives was investigated in relation to norms of filial responsibility. A subsample of 109 employed Asian immigrants in Canada was selected from a national survey of Work and Family conducted by CARNET (The Canadian Aging Research Network). The study tested three hypotheses: 1) stronger norms of filial responsibility (normative solidarity) are positively associated with higher levels and more hours of assistance provided to elderly relatives (functional solidarity); 2) older age at immigration and/or shorter length of residence (immigrant status) are positively associated with higher levels and more hours of assistance provided to elderly relatives (functional solidarity); and 3) there is an interaction effect of norms of filial responsibility and immigrant status on levels and hours of assistance provided to elderly relatives. The results showed that there was no relationship between norms of filial responsibility and the provision of assistance to elderly relatives; nor was there a relationship between immigrant status and the provision of assistance to elderly relatives. Coresidence with the elderly relative, as an alternative measure of norms of filial responsibility in Asian families, was investigated with regard to the provision of assistance to the elderly relative in the post hoc analysis. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between coresidence and higher levels and more hours of assistance provided to elderly relatives.

Comparison of the prevalence of adult children of alcoholics between nursing and noncaretaking occupations

Greer, Cathy January 1994 (has links)
Theoretical speculation implies Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOAs) are drawn in disproportionate numbers to caretaking occupations. This study compared the prevalence of ACOAs between nursing and noncaretaking occupations. A cover letter, demographic questionnaire, and Children of Alcoholics Screening Test (CAST) were distributed to a random sample of 196 registered nurses and 184 noncaretaking employees at a large metropolitan hospital. Seventy-nine nursing and 104 noncaretaking occupations respondents completed the questionnaires.Comparison of demographic data for nursing and noncaretaking occupations revealed similar composition regarding age, number of marriages, and race. There were more male, divorced, widowed, and first born respondents in noncaretaking occupations than in nursing.ACOAs were identified in 21.5% of nursing respondents and 19.2% of noncaretaking occupation respondents. Chi-square showed no significant difference between the proportion of ACOAs in nursing and noncaretaking occupations at the .05 level of confidence. Thus, the null hypothesis was not rejected. This study found ACOAs are not drawn in disproportionate numbers to nursing. / School of Nursing
