Affective Design In Technical Communication

Rosen, Michael Alan 01 January 2005 (has links)
Traditional human-computer interaction (HCI) is based on 'cold' models of user cognition; that is, models of users as purely rational beings based on the information processing metaphor; however, an emerging perspective suggests that for the field of HCI to mature, its practitioners must adopt models of users that consider broader human needs and capabilities. Affective design is an umbrella term for research and practice being conducted in diverse domains, all with the common thread of integrating emotional aspects of use into the creation of information products. This thesis provides a review of the current state of the art in affective design research and practice to technical communicators and others involved in traditional HCI and usability enterprises. This paper is motivated by the developing technologies and the growing complexity of interaction that demand a more robust notion of HCI that incorporates affect in an augmented and holistic representation of the user and situated use.

Den utvalda användaren : En studie om känslan av utvaldhet på researrangörers hemsidor / The chosen user : A study about the feeling of exclusivity for userson travel organizers websites

Stöckigt, Louise, Swartz, Charlotta January 2009 (has links)

This thesis tries to define factors that impact upon the feeling of exclusivity for users on travelorganizers websites. We have identified seven key factors that we believe impact this feeling andthose factors are newsletters, special offers/auxiliary services, registration/limited information, price, limited number of seats on a journey, deals for members and personal service. To researchthis we have conducted a questionnaire and performed interviews with people that are familiarwith travel organizers websites. To create an understanding for the results we have studied usercenteredweb design, affective design and the meaning of pictures. The results show that personalservice and price are important factors to make users feel that they get their requirements andwishes met. Newsletters and special offers/auxiliary services on the other hand are seen by mostas spam and do not impact the feeling of exclusivity because it is being sent to anyone who signsup for it.

An Hedonomic Evaluation Of Pleasurable Human-technology Experience: The Effect Of Exposure And Aesthetics On The Experience Of Flow

Murphy, Lauren 01 January 2005 (has links)
A framework was developed called the Extended Hedonomic Hierarchy (EHH) that provides a basis for evaluating pleasurable human-system experience. Results from a number of experiments within this framework that evaluated specific dimensions of the framework are reported. The 'Exposure' component of the EHH framework and hedonics of the system were investigated to see how changes would affect other dimensions, such as the occurrence of flow, the mode of interaction, and the needs of the user. Simulations and video games were used to investigate how repeated exposure affects flow, interaction mode, and the user needs. The Kansei Engineering method was used to measure user needs and investigate the effect of different hedonic properties of the system on user needs and flow. Findings reveal that: (a) pleasurable human-system experience increases linearly with repeated exposure to the technology of interest; (b) an habituation effect of flow mediated by day; (c) motivation to satisfy human need for technology is hierarchically structured and contributes to pleasurable human-system experience; (d) interactivity is hierarchically structured and seamless mode of interaction is a behavioral outcome of pleasurable human-system experience; (e) there are individual differences among users that affect the likelihood of experiencing pleasurable human-system interaction; (f) performance is positively correlated to flow and (g) the method of kansei engineering provides data from which informed decisions about design can be made and empirical research can be conducted. Suggestions for (a) making Hedonomics a reality in industry, the workplace, and in the field of Human Factors, (b) future research directions for Hedonomics, and (c) principles and guidelines for the practice of Hedonomics are discussed.

OMsorg

Rothlin, Anna January 2023 (has links)
Abstract. In the worldview of a traditionally Eastern cultural context, consciousness and matter are intertwined. In that context negative and positive spaces relate to each other. With that in mind, the vessel is an interesting object to work with. In my master work I explore "Thinking- through- making", a process where making and thinking alternate back and forth, in iterations. The making or designing can be taking place intuitively. Scaling down the vessel, to the point where it has no contemporary practical function, as a way of talking about the exercise of sensitivity, in a fast, loud and insatiable present. Questioning the prevailing value system. By re:learning to become more sensitive, empathy for different types of existence becomes possible, and togetherness between human beings and their companion species opens up. By making (diminutive) stoneware vessels, I enter a long tradition of the time-consuming, hand-building technique of Yixing clay. And hence, contrasts with the technology and scale of contemporary mass production. Perhaps my vessels are pots to plant seeds for the hope of a future human existence? Or, maybe they are vessels for tears, over human existence? At least they are parts of bedrock coming back together from dissolution, for union.
